Her breathing technique is amazing. The finnish vocal coach Anna Vaskelainen notice she is able to breath in-between a word and make it more emotional. Like someone is near drown in the sea of emotions and need to breath to survive.

As for diction, Angelina creates harmonics that are hypnotic with her vocals that cause our bodies to resonate, and to achieve this it is impossible to pronounce each word, and I would not change anything about this genius, you don't mess with perfection. A number of very good vocal coaches reacting to Angelina asked the question; how does she do it? They all came to the same conclusion; you can't teach what Angelina Jordan has; she was born with it. AJ, don't change a hair on your head, just keep doing what you do.

Thanks for this wonderful reaction. To me the difference between those two singers is: Lauren Daigle puts her stamp more on "the message" she will share with us and Angelina puts her stamp more on "the music" she will share with us. And that's a different approach which will give a different feeling/result. And here we see /hear clearly what makes Angelina so special: she can convey emotions from a song to the audience like almost no other can. And that's not talent: that's a gift.

Nice reaction and analysis Chris! Watching this every time brings me back to that online Christmas Concert and the chills it gave me when she first sang this song. I still get the chills even now. When I heard the mashup with Lauren Daigle, it was amazing. I couldn't believe how good they sound together! She definitely does this song justice!

Excellent review! You're possibly my favorite "super fan" because you give Angelina so much love and respect as a person along with praising her unbelievable talent. Yet also you "truth tell" with balance which shows a lot of honesty and integrity, imo. I think that when her newer fans find these super fan channels they will respect the fact that you don't present Angelina as absolutly perfect in every way and that she can do no wrong. You show that she is human and has a few "flaws" just like the rest of us. I do think Lauren deserves a bit more recognition than you gave her. She wrote the song as well as sang it, laying the foundation for Angelina's brilliant cover - which was definitely on a different level and my favorite cover of hers. I agree that AJ is likely a Christian. One of the ways she shows that is that she does not use her sexuality to garner more fame. She is very discreet in that way and she should be applauded for that imo. Excellent Tiger Woods analogy; it's worth a little less than perfect diction at times to allow for Angelina's natural vocal beauty and brilliance. @ 18:07 , great observation! I had not noticed that and I agree that it makes the original words sound more devoted to God and more impactfull. And yes, Angelina's last little run in this song is heavenly.

One of the things that is a very noticeable difference is Anglina's melismatic style. Almost all the ending syllables (especially at the end of a sentence) have more than one note. Lauren never did that. I watched the Christmas Special many times while it was available and this was always my favorite part. My yearning for her to release her own version of "You Say" felt almost physical. It had to be. I was shocked when it began showing up in reactions and thought it was very... call it sacrilegious, to bootleg it (pirate it). I'm glad the Angelina Jordan team has not tried to remove it from public view. The world really needed it. I would have felt more than compensated for the fee I had to pay to view the concert if this had been the only performance we got to see.

I already knew this song and loved the song and I love Angelina's version just as much if not more! Sometimes Angelina's diction bothers me as well but I think it is what adds to the emotion and just like you said about Tiger Woods, I think some of the emotion would suffer if it were corrected. Any time we talk when we are emotional our diction is not perfect and I think her singing this way affects us on an emotional level.

AJ speaks excellent English. As for her diction during a song, well, the girl has been singing the blues along with jazz her entire life. Those particular genres ain't 'spose ta be propa' suh. If she would've annunciated You Say as Lauren did then it wouldn't have been AJ--the girl we all adore. Btw, hug your mom and tell her that you love her. My mom passed at 45 in 1970 and a day doesn't go by that I don't wish I had told her what her love meant to me. Peace to you brother.

I wish your Mom the best wishes. I must also thank you for all you’ve done to capture/amplify Angelina’s performance videos to a silent majority of her fans including me. I just want to add that God’s love has no boundaries and isn’t exclusively defined by Christians. All Abrahamic religions believe in God’s love and as such I, as a non-Christian, am deeply moved by this song especially when I listen to our beloved Angelina. I truly adore her. The lyrics move me even if I hear Lauren Daigle singing this song, but those lyrics are supremely divine when I hear them through AJ’s voice. She is blessed with that instrument to spread love and hope in these difficult times. Thanks again for all you do, Chris.

I have listened to both artist’s versions multiple times and prefer Angelina’s version. That being said, the Kaleidoscopes RMX mashup amazes me how similar their voices are through out much of the song.

Hi Chris, Thanks for your reaction. I totally agree with all the points noted in your analysis. Angelina doesn't especially take this song to a higher level than Lauren's original, but rather to a different level, with more depth, more emotion and more vulnerability in her vocal expression. I love the way she stretches out the notes with her unique and recognizable vibrato, which is for me a real vocal signature. I love this interpretation of "You say" which I rank in my "top 10" favorite covers from Angelina. Greetings from France, Gilles (and sorry for my bad english 🥴)

Chris, I love your commentary on this masterful performance by Angelina. Regarding her diction or lack of it in some songs, I'll admit there have been times when this has troubled me. This is especially true, since I am a Christian, and I would love for everyone to hear Lauren's wonderful lyrics clearly expressed. Alan Papier said that he was almost physically impacted by this performance when he first heard it without even recognizing the significance of the lyrics, simply from how she sang the song. She does have a unique way of communicating the emotions of the song through the inflections in her voice. I think I began to have insight into what's going on when Angelina sings when I first saw her practice session of "Love on the Brain," when she accompanied herself on the piano when she was 13 years old. At first, her lack of diction was off-putting; the lyrics were almost unintelligible. But on closer observation, Angelina was clearly in a different place. At first, she would glance at the camera, almost as if it was an intrusion, but eventually became completely lost in the song and the desperation of the lyrics. The farther she retreated into herself as she sang, the more the lyrics were completely lost to the hearer. I realized that we were allowed into a very special place in that video - we were eavesdropping. She was singing the lyrics from deeply within herself and to herself as they barely escaped her lips. Later, when she sang the song at "Germany's Next Topmodel" the lyrics were much clearer. In that performance she let the audience into her world. With Angelina this dynamic is always present. It's what sets her apart from every other singer I've ever heard. When she sings, she is always in her secret world, but with each performance she decides the degree to which we are allowed to enter. In "You Say" it appears to me that she is deeply absorbed in the lyric and the music. She is aware of us and lets us in... but at times she almost breathes the lyrics, which makes it hard for us to understand. Of course, those unfamiliar with the lyrics look them up, and then when we hear her sing we get the full impact, because we know them. Our angel defies convention. We get to see her genius on display.

Thanks for a great review. i have notised that some songs every word comes out clearly in others not. I understand that it is her decision what style she puts on each song. Love her version of this song, and the way she is singing makes me want to listen to it over and over again. Never get tired of listening to the same song when it is Angelina singing. With this in mind I was prepared to elucidate my differences I had with your reaction. To sort of critique your critique. And then I got to the end of your reaction and I was moved by your pained words. From my own personal experience I remembered and realized that sometimes we need to distract ourselves to ease the pain of our present situations. I am so sorry, and yet so touched to realize and to see Angelina’s mission of spreading love is once again helping to ease pain; in this case, the pain you are presently feeling. I am hoping and praying that Angelina’s beautiful voice may continue to be emotionally supportive and provide some comfort during these difficult times. ❤️‍🩹

Great reaction Chris. This is truly a masterpiece of a cover by Angelina. It brings tears every time I listen to it, but it seems most of her songs have that affect on me. I just spent 6 days in the hospital and I introduced 5 nurses to her. I just feel everyone should know about this amazing young lady.

Hi Chris and congratulations on your observations and comments. Undoubtedly Angelina has positioned herself as a great cover singer and this version confirms it. Technically she is a brilliant singer and always very emotionally committed to what she sings. Lauren's version has the added value of being her original worship and praise song that evidently stems from her experiences and an intimate relationship with God, which is out of the question. I also think that Angelina has Christian roots because she appears that way in her biography and because she celebrates Christmas like every believer. The gospel music present in his repertoire also shows it. But I agree that his love for music and people encompasses the human being beyond religion. The important thing is that she uses the gifts she was given to move us and reflect on ourselves. Greetings!

I keep going back to her telling us that ALL we hear from her extensive catalog of recordings would never have occurred if not for her musical mentor Billie Holiday. Simply put, she's told us to realize 'No Billie, and there would be No Angelina'. The amount of Billie's intricacies in singing that Angelina refer's to when singing, can only be truly realized by listening intently to Billie's catalog of songs. Angelina also said that she was very blessed that Billie's music found her very early. Well, we are all blessed that we've all been able to find Angelina so very early as well.

Chris, remember the interview portion during the performance when they were at the end of the show and Rob Christie stated there would be more to come so don't go away, AJ was kind of caught off guard and she said, "there will be more", and Rob answered, "You Say". As Rob stated at the beginning of the interview portion, "we put this whole thing together at the last minute". I also recorded the show and will treasure it for the rest of my life. I still can't believe that Rob, and the family were able to get some of the greatest musicians in the industry to participate. especially two days before Christmas of 2021.

To be accurate, “diction” is the selection and/or choice of words and phrases. It’s Angelina’s “enunciation” or how she pronounces words and phrases that has been questioned. Diction is frequently confused with enunciation. Cheers!

As usual I had in advance not a clue about the song. I listened to Angelina's version ''live'' in the 2021 show. So of course I needed to check the original by Lauren Daigle. And my ears immediately recognized Angelina's version as beautiful, and Lauren Daigle's version as commonly good. I don't know why or what it is. But for me it is a huge difference between these two singers. Lauren Daigle is in several of my private playlists now. Thanks to Angelina for that. But not this song. I can't have this one. This song is yet another one that Angelina has transformed to perfection. Have you ever contacted Lauren Daigle and asked her to listen to Angelina's version of "You Say". Lauren may have a positive statement and maybe both could do a duet of this song together. It would have a Positive spiritual outcome from both singers. To view a duet of Lauren and Angelina together would be out of this world. Thank you Chris for a great reaction any analysis! As for diction, it is clearly an artistic choice about expression and connection. The choice is made primarily on hard consonants at the end of phrases. If you clearly annunciate the 'd' at the end of 'loved', the tongue reaches to the top of the mouth, creating a hard break of the flow. So there is a choice to be made on what communication is more important. Putting verbal clarity first will call for crisp diction. However, putting emotional resonance first will favor the breathy, heartfelt flow of smoothing over hard consonants. We are blessed for having Angelina 🤩👣🧡🧡🙌❣️

This is my first song listening to her today, and I just cried 💦 through the whole song. You Say At the very end of the Christmas Show on December 23, 2021, (she was 15 and would turn 16 on January 10, 2022). Angelina performed "You Say", I lost my breath, and I got chills, and the tears began to fall. I am an atheist, and my faith is in mankind, and the universe, the antithesis of chaos, not some mythical being. I believe the song "You Say" is referring to Angelina's Angles, those that support her in her quest. There must be a supernatural place in the universe, how else can we explain this being called Angelina Jordan. As AJ's Angels, we don't need to see the black and white to color transition, AJ has a SIGNATURE VOICE that no one on earth can duplicate.

I don't know what Angelina's feelings are about religion, but all that empathy, her ability to emote all those feelings with this beautifully written song, she captures the emotion and delivers it straight to our hearts and, for me, I'm in awe. This is one of the most beautifully written songs of love and faith that I have ever heard and I am forever thankful that Lauren could put those feelings to words, and then to paper.

Lauren Daigle's version was "NICE". I love Angelina, but you embarrass Angelina by comparing them & declaring her version is "better" than the version that has millions of watches & sales. I remember when I first heard Angelina sing "You Say" at her Christmas concert. It was such a surprise. It was kept under wrap for a long time and then someone decided to not follow the request not to share it. This person has to live with themselves for it! I knew sooner or later someone would release it. It's out everywhere now.

I had a lot of thoughts during your fine reaction/analysis. Some of them agreeing with you, some not so much. I will only comment on the religion angle. I have no idea, nor do i care, if Angie follows any religion. But Angie's dream and goal is to sing for the world. Her Angels are global, and probably atheists, agnostic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian of many flavors, and so on. Angie wants to sing for us all, to share her message of love and peace.

What we see is artistic license. Yes, it is art expressed in Angelina's music, just like an artist uses a paint brush. For me, it is a beautiful song but Lauren's performance seems "choppy". The artistic expression of the same song by Angelina Jordan is a very different experience that draws you in. If you missed the lyrics in Angelina's version, no worries. There may be a bit of an assumption that you already know the lyrics, so it is unnecessary to have clear diction. Her style holds you in it's grip. You you just have to hear it over and over. it is an addiction.

Your reaction is a masterpiece in itself. I've been listening to angelina for many years from point she was around eight years old. This is the first time for some reason that i've heard this song. It is remarkable what angelina can do to a song. Reaction to this is just an a letter go about both of those both the singers is great. Angelina's deep devotion to her art really shines through - She'll always try to feel the song as full and deep as possible, and allow herself to be vulnerable. It makes her that much more loveable :) And we love her 🥰

She is Christian. And you just made the vast minority of "Atheism Religion" types scream !!!! LIVE, VS. LIVE-LIVE. LIVE-LIVE IS real time broadcast. No post production.... concert from her mouth-to your ears, through a mixing board for balance and such. UNPLUGGED IS NO ELECTRIC INSTRUMENTS, and MAY be LIVE. MOST LIVE are pre recorded, maybe live, and polished by post production, whether digitally synched, or later lip synched. People with bad eyesight, or lack of current methods and technology fail to realize these aspects and then falsely make (erroneou) comments, sadly. Better diction/enunciation most often sacrifices emotion and feelings.... diction is for the brain, NOT for the heast or soul.

It don't look like a christian song to me ... a very human one ! to a lover or a brother or a mother but a tangible and flesh and bone person ... 🙂 And the the comparaison shows how AJ voice can transmit feelings a lot more than other beautiful voices and diction and techniques ...
