I am always stunned by Angelina. She fills me with hope born of a purity of her performance, the joy she has using that voice. She is overwhelmed with her own joy of singing and powered by the audience adulation. It is not selfish. It is a shared joy, she with us and us with her. It is a trait of true artists.
I get lost in her world. She is so good at hypnotizing you with the purity of her musical professionalism. She lives in a world of musical wonder and invites you in with her every note. she plays with her instrument and while she is having fun with it she is aware of you watching and having fun as well. She is aware of the listener. What makes that special is that she is not wrapped up in herself as she performs. It is a beautiful surrender to music that captures her and she pulls you in with her. I have watched her since she was 8. Mystical and magical is how I describe this singer.

I posted this previously but it is worth repeating. A California medic soldier who was stationed in Iraq, told me about the time she and her companions heard this song for the first time. Angelina is my favorite singer because she is so moving. I've melted and have listened to her 100's of times, I never tire of Angelina. Angelina's love of music translates to me in many ways including the love you speak of. I’m also a 75 year old widower, although I don’t consider myself grumpy. I appreciate your attempt to explain Angelina’s ability to convey emotions that she has probably never experienced. If you succeed in your journey, I will be amazed. I’ve shed many a tear listening to her performances and I believe they are a mixture joy over her amazing vocal gift that she has chosen to share with the world, and an ability to convey raw emotions. I can only imagine what she is capable of doing as she hopefully to continue on the path she has embarked upon. I know personally that a dose of Angelina always makes my dad better. I don’t know how I would have made it through the separation from my family during this pandemic without her voice and smiling aura. Looking forward to your next episode.
Just found you and subscribed for the Angelina reactions. I have a favorites list of my own, but I'll let you find them for awhile before I list ones I would like to share with you. I will share a quick anecdote [just in case you haven't heard it word for word yet] Many try to explain AJ's talent and most use words like out of this world, re-incarnated, old soul, alien, and so forth. I think all are trying to say the same thing. Here's what she has to say: At twelve in an interview when asked the first question "when I see you on stage I wonder who do you feel that you become?" [fishing for a particular artist, I'm sure] Her answer was: "When I sing I go to another world. It’s ...in the world it’s like an endless. It's amazing. It's like full of happiness. And I love ...It's amazing." [her exact words] She brings that world to us, just for a time when she sings. Whatever you believe that place she goes to may be. I'm glad you are taking the Angelina journey! You will enjoy it! We really are meant to.
Thank you Alan for your insight and understanding of Angelina and how so many of us feel about her! I have never been so consistently moved by any singer in my 71 years! Singing and performing are the fabric of Angelina's being when you add her voice and musicianship we have a superstar, add to that her approach to life and her generosity. Angelina has redefined the art of singing and music. Every time Angelina performs she has gifted us Joy and a sense of Humanity. I am one of those Old guys (not grumpy though) who has on more than one occasion had the tears of emotion from listening to the Angel. Not matter how many times I have heard her sing the same songs, it still happens. Her pure emotion in her singing always brightens my day and removes any stress. Choosing Angelina as the only artist for your attention is great. She deserves as much of the spotlight as she can get. She is on her way to becoming one the greats. Every so often there comes a special star that shines brighter than all others. At this time it is Angelina Jordan. She makes me cry too. You can believe it or not. Angelina has actually changed my heart with her singing. I didn't really feel things very deeply throughout my life. But now I have empathy beyond belief. I didn't know what to do at first. I thought something was wrong with me. Then I started seeing that I'm not the only one. I see Angelina as a Godsend that we all need right now.
I am similar to you. I use listening to AJ as a cathartic experience. I listen to her and I feel more. It is very good exercise for us men who have a restricted emotional repertoire
One day we’ll know what protein, enzyme or gene makes some have goosebumps and some like me get tears when we listen to the Queen of Jazz and soul, but that won’t change anything regarding Angelina’s superior art and our nature. Her nature, however (enzymes and genes included) is set for her to go beyond The Show. Her measured and calm words in interviews let me think she’s saving them - literally - for other games than songs, but maybe I’m wrong and she won’t became a very influential personality. Hopefully she will keep doing what she wants and does best so we can be moved every time we listen to her, singing or not.

I am a 78 year old grumpy old man. I found Angelina way back in 2014 when she was on NGT, and have been listening to her songs ever since. Most of them I have heard many, many times! With almost all of her songs I still get goosebumps every time I hear them. With many of her songs, yes, I cry every time I hear them!! And every time I hear her sing, I MELT! She is my tranquilizer, my sleeping pill, my mode of transportation into a marvelous dream world. I can be very upset over something ,listen to one of her songs and I instantly become tranquil and all is well with the world!! I was a young adult when the Mamas and the Papas released this song. At the time it was one of my all time favorites. After Angelina sang this, it has become one of my all time most favorite songs. What she did to the song made it a totally new, wonderful and emotional song!
I am also a 78 year old man. I'm glad I've lived long enough to hear Angelina Jordan. She is a musical genius, but more importantly a humanity genius. I wish she were also 78 so that I could have followed her entire life. She will make many people feel good in the years to come. I, unfortunately, will only see, hear, feel a small part of it.

I'll add my grumpy old voice to the chatter. For years, music has been able to bring me to tears. The first time I recall was when Yo Yo Ma played a Bach cello suite for a curtain call. Since then I have often found myself tearing up watching a talent show or late night on RU-vid. But the remarkable thing with Angelina is that it keeps happening, song after song, even after they have become familiar. My wife doesn't get how a 72 year old guy can get so hooked on one girl. I agree with you, that when Angelina speaks of wanting to give love through her music, it's universal love as you describe that. I've felt that about her singing from the first time I discovered her. When I hear people ask. “how does she do that?” I answer by saying, first, you don’t listen to Angelina with your mind. You listen to her with your heart. Secondly, you experience Angelina because she is a force of nature, unlike anyone else you have heard sing. When she performs you feel her beautiful soul speaking directly to your soul. That’s is what makes listening to her so captivating and spellbinding. She pulls us in and we become laser focused, speechless and consumed with the emotion she invokes in us. She makes us listen to the lyrics and not just the melody. Angelina Jordan is the most supremely gifted musician/singer my sixty-six year old mind has experienced. There are many very talented young singers out there, but they are no match for Angelina’s uncanny maturity, professionalism, versatility, appeal and range.

Angelina sings the song lonesome style, a girl stuck inside on a cold gloomy winter day. She's dreaming of a warm sunny California. We can feel her emotions in the song and we're sad she so unhappy. this grumpy ol'man cried. Thanks for your reactions, I think you're spot on. Looking forward to more.
This is one of my absolute favourite unique renditions from Angelina, so simple, so melancholic - it hits my limbic system in the brain with a lot of sadness. She achieves that by her tone, the slowed down tempo, and the way she narrates the story.... A true marvel ! Listening to it on a rainy and cold winter day in the North of England makes you cry, definitely !

She is a lovely person. I think she has earned the good will, high regard and fondness of her fans. You mention and hint at the metaphysical in your reaction. There must be something to it, people really are touched to an extraordinary degree. When Angelina gave those shoes away and Angelina's new friend promised to pray for her there 'might' have been something happen in the unseen world. No doubt Angelina (or little Angel) has many, many, many praying for her. I confess I have.
I think you're right, Charles, her encounter with that little shoeless orphan girl was a profound moment in Angelina's life. I have always thought that she may have been touched by the grace of God in that moment. I'm not a Christian and I know it sounds kind of kooky, but I just can't get that crazy thought out of my head.

When she sings, she is singing directly to me - very personal. Besides her impeccable timing and vocal prowess there is something in the timbre of her gorgeous voice that pierces the soul. She transmits something unnamed to anyone who is receptive. I am very receptive, my daughter and son-in-law, no. But I believe that Angelina has the power to heal the soul through her singing for those who are able to receive her transmissions. And lucky them.
Alan. I am not religious though have studied religion my entire life. That being said I now consider myself as a sentimental agnostic. As such I hope/wish there is something beyond the here and now. At seventy eight I am about to find out. Angelina is beyond anything I have ever encountered. My Buddhist friends will be smiling as I am going to state that Angelina connects directly to those who are open to their spiritual being. She is an empath possessing incredible ability to emote feelings within those who have empathy. If I am going there I might as well go. Angelina chose to be here. She would be described as an Avatar of the highest order. No child (with few exceptions) talks at eighteen months let alone sings in key. Do you know of any two and three year old that scrolls through RU-vid looking for and listening to Jazz artists. At three telling her Mother she wants to sing on AGT for Simon Cowell. At five states she wants to sing at the Noble Peace Prize Concert. At six is speaking Norwegian, Persian, and English. Singing in sound booth “I Who Have Nothing “ while reading lyrics in English. Travels to the Middle East and meets orphaned street vendor and engages in conversation speaking Persian for forty five minutes while her Mother and Grandmother wait. Takes off her shoes and gives her shoes and makes a vow to never ware shoes while performing before she has ever set foot on a public stage nor performed except at a school function. After talking to the girl she goes to where she is staying and writes in her diary about a door opening in her hart and an incredible light showing stairs to heaven which she climbs it is an incredible feeling to help someone really hard to describe, she states. So what six year old thinks this way. I may have to reconsider my life and as a philosopher I’m up to my chest in dodo.
Hi Bill, I have a message for your Buddhist friends. The Buddha gave up all his worldly possessions in his search for enlightenment. The Indian mystic can give up food and water. This is beyond our normal every day comprehension. Sometimes I feel our AJ just gives up the tune and the melody!!! to achieve a higher state
Alan, once again I am enthralled by your commentary about this once in a lifetime artist we have all come to love and respect. You add depth and context to not only the song but the emotion and nuance that are revealed through her voice and her delivery. I too fall into the ":grumpy old man" category but am thankful to have stumbled across one of her performances which in turn led me to the rabbit hole. I now unapologetically reside deep inside that magical palace you described. I agree with you that she will become a transformative instrument for good in this world as more and more people are exposed to her voice, her delivery, her humility and her humanity. She knows the path she has set for herself and understands how her journey will consume those closest to her as well. She wrote "Shield' at age 11 or 12 and in her lyrics there are several times she sings, "forgive me for all that I am". Her course is set and we are blessed to be along for the ride.
I love your commentary and I can't get enough of Angelina. As a man that does not emote much, she brings me to tears often. She does not do Covers. I saw someone else call them "Hostile Takeovers". I don't think there is anything hostile in Angelina's spirit but they are takeovers. Once hearing Angelina sing song's like Unchained Melody or Someone Like you, I no longer listen to Bobby hatfield or Adele. I prefer Angelina by far as she moves me emotionally that no other artist has achieved.

Thanks for your video - love to hear other people's takes on Angelina. Most fascinating for me is her "other world" as she puts it - closing her eyes (sometimes they're even rolling back under her lids) you get to see her go there. The transformation is amazing to witness, and from this "world" she emotes feelings and soul unlike anyone I've ever heard before. I feel fortunate and grateful I'm able to experience this phenomenal talent. Her artistry is an oasis allowing escape from this crazy world.
The opening of the heart chakra is the gateway to the higher spiritual levels. This is a universal theme of most religions. Angelina is giving us a key to unlock that door.

The original sound. But u said hey....there is something making me cry every time I hear this girl across 300 songs. Same for me and same for me with Dimash. I cry my eyes out for that guy. I am 71 so maybe Stevie Winwood and Duane Almond...but come on. What is making me cry? Not many make me cry. And every time I hear Angelina Jordon....I cry. By the way I cried when I heard Stevie Window for the first in 1967 and on and on times. Having been there I think that was the birth of modern Rock and Roll. I was like...What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a child of the '60's (and an early jazz fan), I remember when the Mama's and the Papa's released this song. It was one I always turned down or off on the transistor radio). Felt their arrangement was totally incongruous with the lyrics (bubble gum for an introspective song?). Could never figure out how the writers missed the point in their arrangement, unless all they wanted was $$ from the bubble-gum listener. When I saw Angelina's video, I ignored it for quite a while, but finally listened to it. Again and again. She actually conveyed to me that she understood the melancholy of being in a cold place in winter and wishing she was warm. FYI, I'm one of the grumpy old men who melts (with a few tears) on a daily basis. Finally, I loved your conversation at the end of this video, and I agree with your "take" on Angelina and her love and hope for humanity.
Alan, i love your amazing Angelina's rabbit hole paintings: first, each Angelina's song would be a dazzling and abundant feast for the mind, the heart and the soul; second, her songs would be sung in a salt cathedral. The connection that you establish, through the rabbit hole metaphor, between Angelina's music and visual imagery is a powerful way for us to separate, in Angelina's musical vision of universal love, what is authentic, genuine and real in what she wants to represent from the entertaining fun love glare of the show business. With the original California Dreamin' playing on the radio, i would feel a dire need to dance, whereas, with Angelina's "cover", a feeling of deep nostalgia is forcing me to stay still in my chair, to reminisce and to let my soul immerse itself in her vocal vibrational frequencies. Her interpretation remains a perfect example of what it is for a vocalist to genuinly feel a song instead of just singing it. Thank you, insperational life lessons teacher! P.S. The family and singing is Angelinas great love. But she has said it herself - that she wants to use her gift to bring love and empathy throughout the world. And from the day she won the Norway got talent competition up to now, she has shown us this, She has been in concert for charity several times, she make us pay attention to the millions of unfortunate children by singing barefoot (and there is a story behind this) - and even the great amount of money she won un the Norway competition was given to charity. Even grumpy old people are a part of her project for love, and her next big project is forthcoming: Reaching out to the younger generations! It is a large burden we put on her young shoulders, but I am sure she will endure and give us decades of soulful and empathetic experiences - using her voice.

There's this wonderful wonderful photo which proves it. Angelina and her granny are face to face facing the camera. You can really see the resemblance and mutual adoration. (I tried to find the photo again but couldn't) One of the most poignant lyrics of the 21st century is in Angelina's song 'Shield'- just 5 words (obviously addressed her granny), 'Don't leave me too soon'
John and Michelle Phillips wrote this song while spending a very cold winter in New York---they missed the warmth of L. A. It was first recorded by Barry McGuire (good friend of their's) in 1963 I believe. Didn't do much on the charts. Then the MPs released it in 1965 and it shot to the top. Their version is very upbeat and makes me feel like dancing. It is my favorite song from them and one of my favorites from the 60's (I was a young adult at the time). I remember Jose's version also, and while I like it, not as much as the original. You may have noticed he changed some of the words; most notably "pretend to pray" into "began to pray". I'm a fan of Jose, but I like "Light My Fire" much better. Angelina's version is much different than both of these: slows it way down, changes some notes, acoustic guitar only, and gives it a very bluesie, jazz vibe. And Voila! A brand new song---A MASTERPIECE! It is my favorite performance by Angelina. Just she and Ivan and that incredible Neumann microphone (she got it for her 12th birthday). I've listened to it well over 100 times and it touches me every time. With all the great Angelina performances to choose from, it is still my #1. Thanks Alan for this mash up. Did you notice that Ivan did the trick of holding his guitar pick between his first and second finger at the start of the song and then seamlessly started strumming with it when the song picked up pace half way through.
Thank you for a very thoughtful reaction to Angelina and for providing excerpts from other singers of this song. For me, it is Angelina all the way. I would hazard a guess that everybody who has listened to Angelina has pondered the question "How?" and tried to find suitable words to describe the effect she has on them. I have done so since 2014 and in the end came to the conclusion that the answer is "because it is Angelina". Then I realised that the complete phrase was unnecessary and that the single word "Angelina meets all requirements. And so it has been ever since. Although I respect your intent in describing Angelina's love as universal and use the Pope kissing everyone he meets as an example of that love, I cannot agree that it is accurate. Your analogy requires physical contact with the two parties, one giving and the other receiving the love. Angelina's love does not require that contact. All one needs is to listen to her singing for the effect to be present. Being able to watch her perform via video enhances that effect, and I am quite certain that if I was lucky to be present in the audience at a concert where she is singing the effect would be multiplied a thousand times. Anyway, enough of my burbling. Just keep these videos of Angelina coming and I'll be right there, cheering you on.

Hi Jeff, I am pleased that I am able to articulate how you feel. That is one of my many aims in doing these videos. I was also very pleased that I had spontaneous tears during the making of this video. Too many reactors on the verge of tears will either try to hide them or apologize. I wear my tears like a badge of honour. 'Like a sun shower- when the sun still shines while there is a little rain.' Not surprisingly for our generation, I find the technical side of the RU-vid world a bit beyond me. I am completely dependent on my 20 yr old daughter for the editing etc. But she returns to university in London next week. What we are doing as a result is making some videos for future posting 'like a new mother expressing her breast milk and putting it in the fridge for later'. So future videos will be drip drip release- probably 3xmonth. But upcoming videos may be less metaphysical- I can't think of anything to say after Universal Love which will not be anticlimatic. A good ole AJ chin wag is not out of the question but geography may be the deciding factor. I am based in Bristol UK

I have the utmost admiration and respect for our AJ. But I would be even more honoured to enter a dialogue with her grandmother, Meri Zamani. She is the Iranian artist who tries to show through her work that' love will grow and triumph' She has distilled wisdom from the ancient and uninterrupted Persian culture. I have also known other kids who have been brought up by their grandparents and/or they were very strong influences. Another fun video. Thanks. I remember the first two very well and liked them both. But, I was a folk fan and The MPs carried that into a soft rock arena. (My first big stadium show was Peter, Paul and Mary just to reinforce my folk likes). So, I liked this song a lot, with "Monday, Monday" and a few others. However, Angelina works miracles on it. The mood is different. It is a song of longing and regret rather than hope and wishfulness. This dichotomy is oversimplistic but the feeling is palpable. Exceptional!! I once responded to another reactor when he, also, asked how does she do it. I agree with you that that question may have no answer. But I believe that one of Angelina's strengths is her ability to connect on a personal level with each listener. I feel that she is singing to ME, waving at ME, inviting ME into her magical musical world. I feel compelled to listen. Some folks use the term addiction. It's what the "rabbit hole" implies. Words don't work here because it's all about feeling. Love your stuff.

I think I'm paraphrasing you when I say that Angelina is inspiring because she isn't performing musically - she is the music. It's like the difference between believing something and belief itself. There are two famous American sports figures who inspire me the same way - Larry Bird (basketball) and Aaron Rodgers (American football). Many say they are the best to play their sports, but what makes me watch them over and over is not their unmatched talent and precision, but that their passion for their craft overwhelms their individuality. Like Angelina, they aren't performing, they simply are their performance.

Two things I try and do with my videos 1 Capture the spirit of how she presents her work- with unassuming benevolence 2 I won't/can't dumb down. (There is too much of that around). I try to elevate/lift the bar, stretch my viewer and his vocabulary, talk outside of the box
I love Angelina but I grew up with the Momma’s and the Papa’s. No one can do it as good as them. Sorry. (I don’t get goosebumps but I always get teary eyed. I am 72 and she touches my heart, feelings, and soul. Yes, almost everything she sings does this to me.). Thank you for today.
Thank you, Alan, for your entertaining, informative and thought-provoking presentation. Thanks, too, for the trip back to the '60s, a mostly exhilarating but sometimes scary time to be a teenager. I have watched Angelina's "California Dreamin'" video dozens and dozens of times and, like you, still cry. If only John Phillips, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot could have heard this. I wonder if Michelle Phillips has. I believe they would approve. Thanks again for dedicating your reactions exclusively to Angelina. She certainly is something special!
