I feel a little shame that I had not heard of Maya Angelou until her passing. Deeply moved by her poem. But I can now learn from her for which I am thankful. God, bless her.

I was in eighth grade and tracked out (luckily) on this fine January morning. Ms. Angelou's poem was an inspiration, even to a young teenager's ears. I love this line: "Any broad alarm of their hastening doom, is lost in the gloom of dust and ages." Wow! Think of that for a second. The massive struggles the dinosaurs must have faced in the last centuries of their existence must have been heartbreaking, but yet life goes on and mammals emerged and filled the void left by the dinosaurs and thus we are here today as bystanders in our own right. Perhaps someday another species or adaptation will look upon the human race as we look upon the dinosaurs - artifacts of a bygone era.

I love how she says the last phrase GOOD MORNING so BOLDLY. It is a very simple phrase, yet means SO MUCH to the recipient of the phrase.

I remember driving in a car an pulled over when I knew Ms Angelou was going to deliver this poem that sent shivers through me and tears flushing my face. “” you might try to stand over me but you cannot hide your face””

"And when you yet knew, you still knew nothing." That pretty much sums up the 21st century thus far. Everyone has an answer and we are certainly satisfied with ourselves, and yet our challenges are even greater and far more unanswered questions still linger.

"I will give you no hiding place down here." The rock cries out to us... The rock being 100 million years old looks upon our fleeting existence like a gust of wind, perhaps jealous of our enormous freedom and power, yet comforted by the fact that it will here witnessing the world around it long after we are gone.

The end of this poem, 'And say simply, very simply, with hope. Good morning' was on the Encarta '95 CD (digital encyclopedia). I had to know where the phrase came from, and eventually I found the poem and its full audio. It has been one of my favorite poems ever since.

She moved me as a person and changed my life's trajectory more so than any person aside from my immediate friends or family. I was a silly Gen X kid and heard these words. I knew I had no excuse, but to bust my ass to be all I wanted.

I recall that hearing was man was supposed to be on our earth made a lot of people uncomfortable that day. Capitalists, in particular, said they felt singled out. I told them they were, and deservedly so.
