I was hoping for an actual "deep dive" and "explanation" of the religious, historical, and cultural meaning behind the angels. Dude can't even pronounce "Longinus," let alone give an explanation of Longinus' role in Christ's crucifiction and its connection to the spear in the series. Sounds like he just opened up a bunch of wiki pages describing the angels and read through them.

They are actually the same, except with different fruits. Misato literally says this. They are all humans. Adam is a human, Lilith is a human, all of humanity, and the angels are humans. We're the 18th Angel. But because of the FAR's failsafe only one of us could thrive. If your talking about the term "Seed of Life" then your wrong saying their different. They are seeds of life. The correct term would be "Fruit of Life" & "Fruit of Knowledge" not "Seed of Life" or "Seed of Knowledge" Without the seed, how can you get the fruit? They're literally made to spread Life. It's just whatever fruit you eat from your progenitor that makes you different from other seeds of life. And they're actually 7 Seeds of Life, that are literally never mentioned except for the Wiki. Only 2 are present, the other 5 are doing just fine somewhere... It's like siblings. You got the normal siblings, and the weird ones. With the 5 others being normal, and Adam, and Lilith being weird. Anyway, beings that ate the Fruit of Knowledge have fixed forms, and weakened abilities, but they can form societies, build, and technologically advance to improve their weakness. Beings that ate the Fruit of Life are powered by the S2 Organ, or Core, have strong abilities, and aren't held back by any weaknesses.

Yeah there's some freaky looking angels based on their original descriptions. I forget the RU-vidr, but he's into theology and did a video about what depictions of angels were actually like and it's really cool.

It's even noted that the sight of angels caused immense fear and wide spread panic and usually when one was present it's purpose was to bring devastation and death.

I know what you're refering to but my memory is hazy. I think it has to do more with how the angels attack. Like that one that used psychological light to destroy asuka mentally. They'd probably not be classified as rejection rather some else. I'm not sure.

I assumed that that was what he meant by they had different types of goals. maybe Rejection meant that it rejected its pregiven role by Adam and acted as a lone wolf.

The role is about how they use their AT field. Which stands for "absolute terror" Adamist beings are different from the Lilin because each one is an individual life of its own with no other member of its species. They are all alone. The Lilin are characterised by their ability to procreate and propagate, forming a collective that can share knowledge and resources. The AT field is a physical representation of personal space, that feeling when someone is too close to you that it makes you uncomfortable? Now imagine that collective sensation of all of the Lillin (any life on earth other than the Angels and Adam are the Lilin) manifested into one being, that's an angels AT field. Spoilers below. Notably, Shinjis AT field is also a rejection type. He rejects close physical affection because he fears and distrusts other people after being used and neglected, but also desires it. Zeruel rejects all of humanity and probably even the other angels, and it's AT field is the strongest because of it, but it is weaker than berserker unit01/rebuild shinji. Presumably in the original, berserker shinji is his mom protecting him, that's why her soul is in unit01 since she knew he'd become a pilot. Asukas mother also went through a contact experiment but it was a failure, and only the part of her mother's soul that loved Asuka was what was transferred over to the core. Which is why afterwards she didn't recognise or care for Asuka. Rei is a clone of Lilin, and unit0 is made from Lilin, She doesn't have a soul so she doesn't need to sync.

True but unit 01 is the only eva that was derived from lilith which is why it's so special.

Getting hyper-technical. The Evangelions are clones of Adams seed, matured. This is why at the second impact, we see Adam glowing white, looking exactly like an Evangelion. Evangelion Unit 01 is not a direct clone of Lillith as Lillith does not take the same form as Adam. Evangelion Unit 01 was built to resemble the Adam clones but used genetic material from Lillith. Also, I suggest that this is why the Angels instinctively want to destroy Evangelions when they see them. Not just because they are standing in their way, but because the offspring of Adam are supposed to be completely unique and in no way similar to one another, yet the Evangelions essentially mimic Adam in appearance and with a similar signature. All Evangelions are grown and remain inactive until they undergo a "contact experiment", where they are implanted with a soul. For Eva 01 it was Yui Ikari and for Eva 02 it was Kyoko Soryu. This means that Eva's will inherently have a connection with their children, hence the importance of Shinji and Asuka being pilots. Unit 00 is never clearly explained as to whose soul is within it, but various hints imply that it is Rei 1 (the Rei that was strangled). This also eludes to a possible reason as to why Unit 00 is prone to losing control when. This gets a bit technical... Unit 00 is implanted with Rei Ayanami's soul, which is risky to say the least... After Gendo Ikari lost Yui Ikari to Unit 01, Gendo attempted to "remake" her. This was done by creating Rei (Rei 1) and fusing her with the remains of Yui Ikari's soul, the parts of the soul that were able to be recovered from Unit 01. This essentially means that Unit 00 has been implanted with a soul that is incomplete... Fractured even. After Rei 1 was strangled and killed, she was cloned, further diluting the soul that she originally had implanted into her. This is potentially why Unit 00 attacks Rei when it loses control in episode 5 and Gendo when it loses control in episode 14. So all this above is pretty simple to understand once explained, however, when first watching the series as a young lad, I was confused as fuck haha. This is what the rebuild movies are like for me now as they break a lot of the logic. For example, in the rebuild we see Unit 05 piloted by Mari... We have no backstory of Mari, but if we follow the lore of Neon Genesis, the assumption would be that Mari's mother's soul is contained with Unit 05... I can accept this, but how is it that Mari can sync with Unit 02 well enough for combat? Anyway, hope this little overload is interesting.

It's all a lot to get my head around but this is more or less my understanding: There were just two types of seed distributed through the galaxy. They split the attributes from the ancestral race so that the seeds would not be more powerful than the race that birthed them. This was also why the spears of Longinus were sent with the seeds, to send the ability to destroy them in case of challenging their masters. Earth was mistakenly given seeds from both powers. This video states that the individual angels have their own motives but my understanding is that they all seek the seed held in the NERV base to reunite their abilities with their opposite. This is why they all descend on Tokyo-3 and some manage to drive into the earth to reach the subterranian base. This is also why Gendo seeks to bring about the Human Instrumentality Project, to abandon the isolation and weakness built into the seed of life that make humans unique from angels, to be reunited with Yui in a heaven on earth, all human souls existing in a primordial soup of afterlife. @@seanw8308 I think you nailed it. I always thought of the two types of life as being non compatible with each other. The angel type life was complete and in control of its own form and abilities, the lilim type life relief on evolution and it's environment in to shape it's form and abilities. Gendo/Selee wanted to unite them both in a super lifeform that had the best of both worlds, but I think they greatly overestimated what that meant. I don't think the 3rd/4th/insert impact here granted godlike abilities, it just allows who or what ever was in control to reshape life as it would exist after that point. But, it's Eva so anything is on the table. It's confusing when you are trying to separate strict in universe canon from the meta commentary and symbolism used in the story.

I love me some mecha/kaiju fights and stuff. But I gotta admit it feels like the genre is a little stale in recent years. Evangelion was so cool cause they took the concept and threw some cool stuff, the way the EVAs move like living organic beings instead of clunk big gun stuff, the heavy philosophy and existentialism. Nowadays when I start a new series of the genre it just feels I’m waiting for a cool fight scene

The Spear of Longinus has a consciousness of its own. It impaled Adam on its own. Adam only returned to his embryonic state after the Second Impact.

Second Impact reduced him to it. it was called a "contact experiment" but Gendo and the boys had notes and cheat codes and knew what was coming... so the expedition to Antarctica was literally set up to make Second Impact on purpose, to reduce Adam to an embryonic state to give Seele and Nerv control over it, and to give them proper time to prepare for the coming of the angels.. essentially they were stacking the deck to ensure Instrumentality would happen, and happen by their designs... with Gendo working within the given confines to move Instrumentality along according to his own design.

Specifically, it was not _one_ Forbidden Fruit in the biblical/OT Eden narrative, it was _two._ Adam and Eve _did_ eat the Knowledge tree, and God speaking to.... other gods or something (but shh, don't pay attention to that, only one God, hush hush) states He's *afraid* of, basically, _having an equal,_ if humans also at the Life fruit; they'd be on the same level as Him, and His Pride, above all else, can't comprehend or tolerate the idea. In-universe: the F.A.R species that made the moons and Adam and Lilith likely naturally evolved both the S2 Engine _and_ the capacity of individuality and science. So that time Unit 1 ate an Engine: have *that,* but with the mental capacity, abilities, and intellect of both the Leviathans of _Mass Effect_ and the Precursors of _Halo,_ (and add a splash of Pillar Man in there, because why not) and you'll likely end up something just south of the FAR species. As far as we know as to _why_ they made the moons: they were about to die for some reason or another. I bet it was likely their own fault, a civil war or something, but the hard fact was they were going extinct, their world doomed.

My vote is on a civil war; that the white and black moons could be from separate factions; but when they realized they went too far, and realized they doomed themselves to extinction; they launched the eggs, with the lances as a final agreement, lest they continue the war for the rest of eternity, across all the universe, and destroy any chance of life ever existing again... and then they fucked up and two got sent to Earth on accident. After all, isn't what they were doing what SELEE was doing as well; making an eternal symbol of proof that they were there, with Unit 0 that will exist forever in orbit (in one ending, i forget which)? My other idea is something like the Bydo from R-Type: _their_ backstory is that in about 6 hundred years or so, we fight some kind of alien enemy that we pretty much threw out the concept of 'war crimes' to fight against, including biological weapons meant to corrupt and destroy ecosystems. However, before they could be launched; the Bydo activated within the solar system, and, as designed to wipe out all antagonistic life they encounter, they went Skynet on us for several chaotic hours, costing billions of lives, until an experimental weapon shunted them into another dimension. There, they continued to thrive and evolve, and eventually found their way back to this dimension... in about *_1_* hundred years. So, them showing up 500 years before we create them, we're now at war with them for survival, when the only reliable weapon we have against them are the Force Cores (which in truth; have a Bydo embryo used as an energy converter, meant to fight the wave-particle duality that their tissues are built from). And the big twist: that part about an organism that corrupts and destroys ecosystems? The in-game studies of Bydo DNA, and even things they themselves show you from their _memories of Earth_ reveal the truth: the Bydo _are_ human. In Eva, I recall at one point they said that _all_ the Angels are basically human, with a just .02% difference in DNA, with just different ways of expressing our DNA through the raw power of the S2 Engines and manipulation of AT Fields. In fact, since human's AT field has the function of keeping our minds separate; I bet each angel fought is basically an entire 'species' collected as one gestalt entity. So, in the ending with everyone reduced to Tang: I bet if someone tossed in an S2 engine at that point, you'd get another Giant Naked Rei with absolutely no competition.... free to go after any other Moons that may still be out there. But yeah; human gods battling across time and space, kin against kin, for the rest of time...

@@explorercompass0167 correction, Seele knew about all of this *before* Second Impact. they set up the Antarctica expedition, and then had the team conducted a "contact experiment" but the point of it, was for a Lilim to touch Adam, and initiate Second Impact. causing Second Impact by a human literally putting a hand on, making "contact" with the dormant Adam. hence, contact experiment. in doing so, they reduced Adam to an embryonic state, buying themselves time, and giving them direct control over Adam. which gave them the ability to guide Third Impact to the conclusion they desired... Instrumentality.

That’s why Seele was so concerned with keeping Unit 1 safe and why unit 4 exploded.

Actually, unit 1 never had an S2 engine. If it had one, it would equal the power of a god. Hence the Eva went berserk and became aware, the armour plating which was also like a restraint, was broken, the Eva then went animalistic as it wasn’t controlled, it took the S2 organ into itself. Unit 4 was a production Eva like 3, but had an artificial S2 unit, that was perhaps intentionally sabotaged. But in end of Evangelion, the mass production Eva’s have fully functional S2 units, and dummy plug systems.

She didn't have one from the beginning. If she did, SEELEE would've started the Human Instrumentality project way sooner

Thats because they possess the souls of Adam and Lilith (at least Kaworu does have Adam's, but im pretty confident Rei has Lilith's souls). Im pretty sure they mean out of Adam's children.
