NGL, I’m a little envious of Anno that even while his mental health was plummeting, he still managed to create works that we’re still watching and discussing. It shows that mental illnesses don’t have to be an impassable obstacle
@Stevem
@Stevem Год назад
Well there's a couple things to add to this , it wasnt him on his own and it was his job so there's levels of pressure there. There are points at his lowest when he just cant work and that's absolutely fine. Then there's everyone around him helping to make said thing which i dont think most people have.
@GibberRish
@GibberRish Год назад
There's so much effort and research in this video that really makes this a definitive retrospective into Anno's career. My friends have recently gotten into Anno's works and this has helped in consolidating all the major details. Navigating decades of shows and films in and then explaining them in entirely different language is no easy feat. For me the source document is a gold mine, there's a lot I've never read and wouldn't have if not for this project of yours. Absolutely amazing work dude!
@Stevem

yeah that source doc was a fukcing pain to sort so i hope people go wild because while there are some archives out there they're basically at best done by date (sort of) opposed to by project etc

The Shinji hate definitely did come from people's insecurity. Because you had a character who felt helpless and was trying to figure things out but was in a situation where he wasn't allowed to. That creates real fear within people. It's why I always liked Shinji.
@nethilym
@nethilym Год назад
I feel like that's the case for most things, even if the people complaining about it aren't aware of it. After all, self reflection is an easy enough concept to understand, but very few can truly use it effectively.
@isaacsteele7986
@isaacsteele7986 Год назад
@@VicarAmelias That too deep a look at it. Men are expected to peform and provide. Inability to do that, and lack of confidence in yourself and your ability, makes you seen as weak. Shinji has no confidence in himself and isnt able to consustently perform what he is able to do, so he is viewed as a pussy. But he really isnt. What it shows more is the double standard people have. If shinji did what he did but he wasnt forced, people would not look at him the way they do. But because its his job, and he is expected to do it, it makes him a failure.
@Manganization
@Manganization Год назад
It's almost saddening that when someone criticises a depressed character in a show, their criticism is often discounted to "people's insecurity". Some people genuinely find characters like Shinji annoying due to societal reasons, or because people genuinely find characters such as Shinji aggravating. And it's often because they're not fun to watch for general audiences. If you're going to follow a main character whose antics are often to be told off and be sulking, crying or screaming all the time, then most people's patience will wear thin. I personally like Shinji, but I also found him very sufferable at times. On the other hand, I DESPISE Subaru from Re:Zero. Hating a character doesn't mean you're projecting, it just means that you hate the character. On the other hand, people who think Shinji isn't a man are definitely conveying their own insecurities, but there is a cultural aspect to this.

Dude literally put his rage, all his depressive thoughts and what he thinks is wrong with humanity into one anime. And it created one of the best anime of all time. It's honestly insane how much these producers were against this sort of writing and depressive material considering it saved their entire company and maybe even the entire anime industry. The writing, depressive material and the lack of explanations made you question everything and interpret it based on your own feelings and that's exactly why the anime was so f*cking good and still is.

In the BTS doc for Funky Forest, you can see when Ikki Todoroki first meets Anno. He's a bundle nerves, meeting his hero and scene partner all at once, and gets Anno to sign his copy of Evangelion. It feels illegal to watch such a good video for free. Extremely well done from start to finish. From the animations to the indepth analysis of Hideaki's psyche and even small details like the numbers on the top right corner to keep a sense of which era of time we are on really adds a great touch. The editing, sound design, animation and writing are all 10/10. Thank you for such a detailed video essay. Forgot to add this, also the part that you grew out your beard the whole video was also a great touch of kind of showing how you also grew as the video kept going but also stated how long it took you to make it in the first place.

Props on all the animations you worked on for this video they were amazing, especially the ending bit, I think they really captured Anno's essence from the beginning of his career to now, and probably that overworked exhausted state too. I also love all the extra B roll you scavenged for this, like the daily life footage of 90's to early 2000's Japan, behind the scenes interviews, cells, early animations, and articles! Congratulations. Now get back to work, you have more essays to make 😈

the obsession with the concept of "masculinity" (see the popularity of characters in pop culture like Andrew T and the sudden rise in "masculinity" podcasts) in the west is what makes Shinji so important. He portrays the vulnerable side that everybody has to some degree, even if we are too pridefull to accept that. Some people hate Shinji because they hate that part of themself, they might feel exposed. Also, I suffer from mental illness (I'm medicated; I'm doing fine so far), and I feel that all of Shinji's trauma is easier to understand from that perspective than from someone who is considered "well-adjusted". My brother who does not suffer from mental illness doesn't hate Shinji, but he doesn't understand him as I do.

The rise in hyper-masculine culture is a reaction to the increasingly heavy suppression of masculinity in the Western mainstream for the last century, which is being carried out by perverted ideologues, and this is a critically important factor which is dishonest or ignorant to overlook. It isn't about kicking men for having inherent weaknesses, it's about kicking down at the culture of willful weakness.

This is great, you already know. Sad that FLCL was glossed over so briefly (I’m still at Kari Kano while writing this) It’s not anno’s project, but it’s a parody of eva and many other things (you already know) and I would love a dossier like this one for FLCL. I have watched it more than anything else, over 50 times since I first saw it 20 years ago, and still find it fascinating, though that’s probably because it was so formative for me, but also because it’s so dense. No one talks about the original tv airing in Japan, or the VHS release. I wonder if there were other cuts.

@@Stevem I’m surprised no one else has yet. For EVA I’ve been reaching out for an all-encompassing take and just couldn’t find it. Mostly it’s all written in Japanese! There so much to cover I never felt I had a firm grasp on the complete cultural sensation, now I feel a lot more caught up. Thanks! The way people regard EVA is how I feel about FLCL. I know enough about the production behind the scenes to know that there is so much there I still don’t know. From this video, I learned that prog and/or whatever adult swim was not just a total cringy disgrace I thought it was, but that anno was about to own FLCL, was stabbed in the back and the property was sold to the highest bidder, making it a disgrace on the corporate and production level too. Wow! FLCL was already perfect end to end, when a part 2 was announced all my red flags went up. Before then I said FLCL was untouchable and a rare case of something that was perfect and never messed up by anyone. Ah well…
