A brain angiogram is a relatively common procedure in neurosurgery. Check out this video of an actual brain angiogram where we use a catheter, x-ray imaging guidance and an injection of contrast material to examine blood vessels in the brain for abnormalities such as aneurysms and artero-venous malformations.
Cerebral angiography produces very detailed, clear and accurate pictures of blood vessels in the brain and may eliminate the need for surgery.

Well done Gwen and the team. I've had numerous angiograms as I have an incredibly rare AVM in my retina and midbrain (called Wyburn-Mason syndrome). Angiograms are an odd experience and it's like hot static being flushed around the head! But clearly it's an invaluable investigation and this is hugely useful stuff.

i had an MRI angiography (propably the same) to check for artery entrapment syndrome on my legs. I had contrast dye injected into me from my hand artery, with a usual (?) flevo-catheter. i've seen my legs and thighs in full 3d images, rotated etc, with my arteries "glowing" PS. Results for artery entrapment were negative.

I'm getting another one in a couple weeks I've had 3 strokes and haven't gotten a MRI in 3 years. Kinda nervous what it will show. I don't think when I had my angio they went through the artery in my leg. They just used my IV I think? Is that common for angiography?

I had a cerebral angiogram with gradient testing of a transverse sinus stenosis. The procedure itself was fairly straight forward however I remember experiencing quite an uncomfortable feeling and pain as the interventionist was testing the pressure gradient! so interesting! I also had insertion of a "angioseal" as a safeguard to prevent any femoral arterial bleeds. (I'm from Australia for reference). I also felt quite a lot of pain in the groin for days following the angio, however in comparison to any invasive brain surgery this is a walk in the park :)

I'm having one for an AVM Thurs. 7/1. I'm already freaked out about the AVM itself, and now about this. I had a trans-jugular liver biopsy 2 years ago, it was truly awful. I told my doctor I would never do something like that again, yet here we are.

As a surgery resident, I would suggest you go to medical school without any preconceived notion about what speciality you want to take up, and give it your best in every department during your clinical rotations. I joined medical school with the idea of going into psychiatry, fell in love with surgery during my clinical rotations. We really have any idea about what a field actually entails while we are in high school, so it's better to keep an open mind. Best of luck!

for me the worst thing was contrast + injection + i had a feeling that they are putting in some kinda thick tube into my groin. i was really stressed and honestly i don't remember what was after that :D

Does it feel like you're peeing yourself? I have to get CT scans all the time and when they inject the contrast, it feels like you're wetting yourself, and I need to have the garbage right beside me when they get me off the table because the 2L of fluid I need to drink before the procedure, just projectiles out of me.

I had my first ever angiogram yesterday. I viewed this video the night before. Thank you Gwen for sharing your personal story it helped me a great deal and didn’t find the experience overly daunting. I had cerebral angiogram to map pending procedure of coil and stents at the Basilar Tip Artery @ 12 x 9 mm. I hope you continue to be well. I had my angiogram done at Sydney, Australia’s RPA Hospital.. what a great Team of Neuro and other Specialists they have! Thank you again ✨💜🇦🇺🙏 P.S I also had the crazy lightening storm images .. unreal ✨

So glad I found this video. I have pulsatile tinnitus that hasn’t cleared up so the doctor wants to check the blood flow with an angiogram. Nearly 50 years ago as a trainee admin. person I spent some months in the London's X ray dept. where all the neuro work was done by Leon Morris working with Messrs King and Watkins. I seem to recall, though it was a long time ago, that the angiograms involved injections in the neck with the patient strapped into a chair that was turned upside down for a while - probably not ideal if there's an aneurysm about to blow but I suppose it was cutting edge at the time.

I'm having an angiogram on 8/2/2021 , I am scared to death I had a mini stroke with no paralysis so the thought that I could have another stroke during this scared the shit out of me. They also told me I would not be under I will be sedated I'd rather be under . Im afraid of bleeding out of artery my question is what if the find blockage in the brain does that mean brain su5thdr. Told me he just Hope's it's a blood clot cause medication can handle that, I'm still scared anybody have any thoughts to calm my fears.

I had the procedure in the same room and with most of the team of Gwendoline. In my case the dye injections, of which I have three, made me feel sick and saliva was gushing inside my mouth just as the surgeon was asking me to stay still, without breathing or swallowing 😫 thankfully it was over quickly enough

I had a brain hemmorage 5 years ago. Had brain surgery survived, then they told me during the surgery they found a big one right in the middle of my brain. Had 2nd brain surgery 7 months later. Now my original bleed anurysm site is doing fantastic. The middle one, however, has come back. I have a cerebral angiogram in 3 weeks to see if a piece of mesh will fit the anurysm. Then my 3rd brain surgery a few weeks after that. I'm tired of it all, to be honest. I'm scared this time I won't survive.

I have three aneurysms two of which I had clipped by a pterional craniotomy. I thank my lucky star's and a excellent neurosurgeon for a positive outcome so, far. I still have a road to travel regarding aneurysms.

What you think is just a scan that doctors can write and order in seconds takes the patent 4 hours to recover from. What an eye opener. How many times does he need to inject dye and does each injection only give one image? And how do they read the images do they have to find anomalies in that short time or after the procedure look at the pictures taken?

I has this procedure two days ago and mostly I agree with her reaction however, during one dose of the dye my right eye felt like it was on fire, my neck had a severe cramping pain, my legs tingled a lot and my chest was pounding - not out of nerves. That was pretty scary but they said it was normal. I wish I'd had more preparation for the possibility of that kind of pain as opposed to only being told about a heat and fireworks. I also wish I'd known how horrendous the bruising was going to be. However, the doctors were great and the procedure was over quickly.

I had two so far plus an embolization of a raptured brain aneurysm. I will have another procedure in three days for another aneurysm, a small one but located in a tricky area, at the ACM bifurcation. The procedures are painless and not invasive, the only bad part is that you have to stay on your back for 24 hours and not to bend your leg in order to prevent a rupture of the femoral artery. Wish me luck :)

I am having this done soon, and lowkey kinda scared. having done for the same reason. I shouldnt be scared about this since ive had over 12 surgeries before and im fine with surgeries but yet having a angio done for some reason scares me.. But thank you for this video explains it in a way i can understand. so now i know a bit of what i can expect. Im pretty sure they might make me sleepy (with some meds) for im more relaxed cause I have a hard time staying still sometimes. and I know its very important to stay still for this,

Amazing video, interesting how people commented on the music; wake up people, who cares - this procedure that some of us has to get is risky (you hate the music), how immature. My daughter has a very large AVM...her first bleed was in 1999. They went up through her groin and used 77 coils to stop the bleed. When it bleeds, the only thing they do is go up through her groin to her brain and use a new "Glue" type stuff to stop it.

My daughter ( 27) has developed an AVM in her cheek. She has to have a Angiogram to assess the extent of it.. We are so desperately worried firstly because of this procedure and secondly the consequences of whatever comes to light. This video has gone some way to calming my nerves about the Angiogram but not entirely. However I suspect that is normal. Thanks for this film. It was a good idea to film it. The calmness of everyone in it has done me good.

@@muzankibutsuji20541 She had the angiogram 3 weeks ago. It went well and it wasn't as scary as she thought it was going to be and quite painless. They did a 3D scan of her tumour thing. It is a tangled mass of veins, nerves and arteries deep in her cheek muscle. It will be a very complicated operation. We are dreading this now but they tell us it will grow if we don't get it removed. Ho hum.

Hi My Father had a stroke in 2018 and his ruptured Aneurysm was closed using the endovascular coiling technique. we just recently found out during his Imaging CTA that he has 2 more Aneurysms. results say as "There is a left Paraclinoid segment aneurysm measuring 3 mm. possible 2-3 mm aneurysm in the right paraclindoid location. There is a 2 mm nodular focus adjacent to the coil pack which either represents a residual or recurrent aneurysm." --- we have an appointment with a neurosurgeon but still wanted to ask how severe these findings are?

my mom had a stroke, the MRI's show that its small and that the side effects happening shouldnt really be caused by the area affected. Now after a spinal tap i approved, and finding out the day after; was done by a rookie college intern who failed to do it correctly and had to do it twice.... im scared to approve anything for my mother going forward. IS THERE ANY REASON OR PAIN THAT A PATIENT CANT HANDLE AN ANGIO?

For those who have had one, what were your side effects immediately after and days after? I am petrified. Absolutely petrified of this procedure to the point when I found out I had to be awake I burst into tears. For me it's bitter sweet, I need the test to rule things out, but I'm physically sickened at the thought of this procedure. I had to tell myself to breath every couple of minutes when the procedure was happening. If anyone can share their best and worst experiences, I'd be forever grateful! Thanking you RU-vid community :)

Hi Christian! Gwen here - the patient in the video. I've had about 5 awake angiograms now and I don't get any side effects from the dye after the procedure whatsoever - literally just lasts a couple of seconds whenever the dye is injected, and as you can see the consultant warns you just before. Because they know which vessel the dye is going into it's fairly easy to predict which effect you might experience (e.g. flashing lights / burning sensation / metal taste etc - they all vary depending on which blood vessel they're in). The only thing I have after angiograms is the puncture site in my groin is a bit tender and bruised for a few days after, but it's no worse than well... Tripping and getting a bruise! So sorry you're really anxious about it - I don't know where you're treated but most places can offer some light sedation to help calm your nerves :) Hope that helps!

My experience with cerebral angio is similar to Gwen, I find though that I do experience kinds of sharp pain inside my head during the procedure, but it was tolerable and only lasted seconds. The hardest part was the groin pain and having to lay flat for four hours post procedure (which is harder than you think lol). All the best with your upcoming angio!

Hello! The first time I had this done, it was uncomfortable during the process. When I held my breath, I felt like my head was going to pop because of the pressure then it went away quickly and like Gwen mentioned, you feel like you pee yourself. It’s a hot sensation down your legs. It’s not painful. Afterwards, while at home, I felt super sore like bruised all on one side of my body. Recovered no problem. I just kept thinking I was going to spilt open a vein more than anything lol. Second time, no pain besides puncture site would feeling a slight pinch. It was a total different experience. These actually make me feel better because the neurologist can see if the blood flow is okay in the brain!

One time they used some sort of closure device that meant that I didn't have to wait as long afterwards, but it felt like I had a tennis ball in my pants for quite a while afterwards. It wasn't really that big but any swelling there feels bigger when you are walking. The part I dislike most about the procedure is not being able to see what's going on, so this video was really helpful. Thanks for mentioning that peeing sensation with the contrast dye - the first time I had a procedure that used it (a CT) they forgot to warn me, so it was quite an unpleasant surprise.

In Sweden it’s strictly forbidden to wear anything on your hands or wrists, even when just having a regular check up with a patient with minimal physical contact.

We're allowed to wear a wedding band when we scrub in theatre. Glad you found it helpful!

Certain people go extreme in taking precautions..I guess Sweden is on the extreme in this regard. The hands and wedding band have been thoroughly washed. So don't fret🙂

I’ve been told today due to me also having an AVM that I need an angio gram, but for me there putting me under general anaesthetic, I’m so happy their putting me to sleep cause I could not handle it awake 😅
