Brian & Cole Sonne are my angus heroes and Sandi Brock is my sheep hero. They care for their animals and give them a lot of care and love. Too bad You Tube gives Sandi so much trouble with breeding & lambing. If she showed a view like we see when a cow is calving, she'd get thrown off You Tube. Yet the let those city type messy, falling apart buildings & fences show their goats & pigs have close up shots of their birthing. They don't give their animals the drugs or care Sandi, Cole & Brian do. Cole, could you let Sandi know about those 1/2 barrel calf sleds you spoke about a couple days ago? She sure could use 1, and I can't seem to find your video where you told who made them. She had a ewe trying to get in her lamb taxi made out out of Mark's ice fishing sled & her clothes basket lamb sled. Love you all. Diane Peterson -- raised on a 200 + acre angus/ crop farm back in the 50 's & 60's.

Cole, your dad was just showing his MacGyvering skills with that fence, esp with the weather being crap, the ground being a mess, and is my understanding, the price of lumber has gone way up. Lol I laughed a little too hard at the cow stepping on the sled, trying to keep you from moooving her calf into the barn. She was prolly thinking, "no joyriding with my kid'. Was nice of you to take them on a sled ride though. And well I'd be thankful that your dad didn't pull out the afterbirth till after he wiped the stuff off the side of your face. Small blessings. And in honor of National Agriculture Day/Week. Thank you, Cole, Brian, and Jeff, for all you do for the agriculture industry, and for being the wonderful you, that you all are. Your girlfriend did a nice job on the website as well. Stay safe, be well, and stay blessed.

🤔🤔🤔. That mean cow with the stuck afterbirth reminded me of a time I didn’t want to remember at all. Every May to August we’d visit my gramps ranch for fun times then at 10 it became a paying job and hard work. A cow he’d already brought in before we arrived was so mean but was in trouble. She’d lie down and if gramps or whoever approached she’d get up and charge. The calf was stuck and soon was yelling and again charge us. She’d finally got so mad she got up and swung around so fast that calf came flying out 20 ft knocking my uncle passed out holding it and that cow nearly killed him. When all was done decided not to work on checking her out so next day some of the placenta was hanging and she was awful sick. Never forget that awful smell and worse than smell of collected manure. When gramp was asked how does he handle the muddier times and all that manure he said he didn’t smell anything and that’s why he continued with raising a herd. He was told if ya don’t smell it then he was meant to be a farmer. Asked another question which he said HUH to claiming he couldn’t hear what was asked. Claimed he lost his hearing a few years after marrying gram cus got tired of answering all her questions 😅😂🤣. Needless to say the work y’all do is definitely not easy and if you’re clean then didn’t work at all. After his love my gram passed his hearing was much improved and his stories was the pride for several more years. Keep sharing your stories and Cole keep recording them too. Back then we’d keep written journals in hopes to write books for history of our family but you keep recording for times ya just want to hear your dad and uncles voice telling them instead. Sure wish I could hear the voices I loved to spend my summers with and other times too and who surprised us with a college fund or just starting a new life and we didn’t find out until after he passed and then had a letter for each one of us. Sorry sooo long and now know why I love your videos. Ya do bring a flood of memories and a wonderful display of a great father son and family relationship filling the needs of this country and world and a flood o great stories. Am ready for next one soon. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

For conditions like that we made a small trailer (2'x4') with stockade panel sides with opening back gate to put the calf in pulled with atv, Easy to pull, holds a couple calves, calf won't get out and cow can see the calf standing. With all the rain and snow you should have grass stirrup high by May. Keep on keepin on.

Heya. I'm from Iceland and I'm a dairy farmer. If my cows don't clean in 12-18 hours I pull gently and try to get as much as I can out and don't do anything else. My vet says they can handle it fine. I do notice that after they finish the cleaning in about 3-4 weeks the yield increases and before that they'd be underpreforming yield wise so it definetly takes a toll. You are in a different situation tho. You need them to milk the most first few weeks then not at all and you also probably have way more bacteria to fight off than we do so I'd consult a local OLD! vet about any antibiotic use.

Hi guys, the vets around here say don't worry about cows not cleaning unless they stop eating, giving antibiotics slows the rotting process, they'll clean evenally. Works for us but not saying you have to agree. Yes Brian I agree with you about calving when its a little colder, we've had wet snow last 3 days and I don't like the wet and mud, feel for you guys. We have a trailer for bringing in calves. Dad built it years ago and it works like a charm. It has a metal floor and bars on the sides. It easily holds 2 calves so if they have twins, or you need to bring up 2, you can bring them together. The cows can see them and even get up and smell them but the calves can't climb or fall out. We pull it behind a 4 wheeler.

My grand father a very long time ago develop a calf cage on ski’s that we use to pull either behind a truck, tractor, etc and it worked slick in any type of weather. The cow can still see and smell her baby and follow behind to the barn. Also helps w the protective mommas to try to keep u safe! I’m sure there is something on the market today comparable but that is what worked for us. Duck boat u are using works just as well! Lol keep up the great work!

Yep..... it is April 17th 2021 here on our ranch in Nebraska... and we feel your pain!! LOL --- Like your handy dandy calf sled!! We have about 660 calves down and another 100 to go, and we too were calving in that sloppy, snow storm mess, in March! Always interesting to see how others manage their herds. We don't have a big barn like yours and have mostly sand on the floors inside our barns, so our calves don't get a nice hay bed inside but they do ok. We also don't take the time to doctor the cords of the new calves. When dry, they get a tag, a shot and ear notches and a hoof measurement and they are good to go. They stay outside in the elements unless it is super cold or very windy in cold weather.... just need to tough it out, but we have lots of shelter belts, and our main calving lot has tall shelter belts on both the North and South sides, so are pretty snug in storms. Today I fed my bunch of bull calf pairs (185 pairs) on our "maternal homestead 3 miles Northwest of the main place, and had the fun to pitch hay from a bale that my son decided to unwrap the net wrap off of yesterday ... outside of the pasture, and it fell apart in the stack yard. I got to pitch the rest of it onto my hydrabed this morning so I could go feed it. It was all leafy and fine, like it had been run through the processor.--- Took 3 trips and about an hour of pitching. Great start to my day. LOL Since we had wet snow on the ground yesterday morning with more falling, I fed only half of my feed in the corral behind a shelterbelt over there... and had my son go feed the other half late afternoon... while I made 3 pies to freeze for our branding next week. He had the same fun that I had, trying to roll out big bales of hay with the hydrabed, in mud with almost 400 critters milling about in the small corral. But he made the decision to remove all the net wrap from one of his bales, and it fell apart on him... and had to try to roll out half, and ended up pitching a bunch too... but he left me the other half to feed this morning! (I sent him a photo and told him thank you! ) LOL My husband and I ranch on the family homestead, with our 26 year old son. The ranch has been in my husbands family since 1892 and our son is the 5th generation to ranch it, and unless he marries and has a son.... the last of the family name! We are strictly cow/calf, no crops, in the NE sandhills, though I grew up a farmers daughter and was the hired hand for a farm family when I met my husband, so I was driving those big John Deere tractors once upon a time, myself! We host Airbnb 10 months of the year, so have opportunities to show city folks what life on a ranch is like. We have about 760 head of cows, and they are handled enough that many are pretty tame and can be hand fed cake cubes.... which we take our guests out to do, and they love it! It is always enjoyable to see these families and sometimes little kids, face to face with a bunch of cows eagerly waiting for a "cow cookie", our own real life petting zoo! That is why I enjoy videos like yours, an opportunity for city folk to SEE what goes on and the hard work behind it, and that we are not mean to these animals as often portrayed. It is hard work and can be very frustrating and worrisome, but love the ranch and cows! Nothing like seeing these grass covered, rolling hills for beauty and peace.
