I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but when Michael Gambon plays Dumbledore in HP, he is mean, angry and spazzy... Dumbledore is supposed to be kind and patient .. Leave your comments!
No copyright infringement intended.. This is my first video so please don't comment too harshly.
Harry Potter 3-5 clips
w/ a bit of PPP, (my brother's idea, not mine)
The bit at the end was just for a laugh.

Not at all. Dumbledore's human, no matter how powerful he is. His friends were being tipped out of their positions and the ministry was laying its roots, all the while his own position is at risk and he's got to keep an eye on Harry. He's bound to be frustrated and that will spill over eventually. Anyone who doesn't think Dumbledore has a impassioned side of his personality never read the books properly. “At that moment, Harry fully understood for the first time why people said Dumbledore was the only wizard Voldemort had ever feared. The look upon Dumbledore's face as he stared down at the unconscious form of Mad-Eye moody was more terrible than Harry could have ever imagined. There was no benign smile upon Dumbledore's face, no twinkle in the eyes behind the spectacles. There was cold fury in every line of the ancient face; a sense of power radiated from Dumbledore as though he were giving off burning heat.” Dumbledore doesn't know how to be angry? Puh-leease.

@@Scott_Dunbar_II - Azkaban too. In fact, Azkaban Dumbledore is the closest to book Dumbledore as either of the two actors got. So really Gambon was good in the manority of his performances. Not true, Harris called McKellen "Passionless actor": McKellen finally explained: "So whether they were already sensing that Richard was ill, which I couldn't have anticipated at that point, or whether it was for another part, which is what I assumed, I don't know. But no, I was never up for Dumbledore. He said I was a 'passionless actor', and so were Derek Jacobi and Kenneth Branagh. I was very happy to be in such esteemed company! But as I say, Richard Harris was mainly a disappointed man because I had played Gandalf and he had to settle for Dumblewit. Or Dumblebore, I should say"

Micheal Gambon's portrayal is ultimate. He shows a playful and bubbly character in HP 3 and 4 where there is no imenant threat. Once voldy returns he becomes stern and mysterious. He is acting like how a headmaster should act. Nobody would have got a sense of fear if Richard Harris continued to play Dumbledore. Moreover chemistry between Radcliffe and Gambon is awesome...

Whatever your take is... It is a vastly different character than the one in the book. He is not stern in the books except for very limited scenes, and only towards death eaters, such as meeting with Snape when he was a death eater in book 7, or towards Barty Crouch Jr. in book 4. And he usually speaks very softly and politely towards Voldemort as well, only teasing him by occasionally calling him Tom. He doesn't sternly yell his name when meeting people from the ministry, as well. Dumbledore would never yell at students because he is mad at someone. He wouldn't yell at students - period. It just is a very different portrayal in the movies, and to me the character that leaves the characterization from the book the most. Hot take - although I love Alan Rickman and his portrayal of Snape: Snape in the books (an abusive and cruel coleric) is also very different than Snape in the movies (a chill and sophisticated grump).

The people who prefer Michael Gambon's portrayal more than likely didn't read the books. I don't think Gambon did a bad job by any means, but Richard Harris' portrayal was MUCH more like the Dumbledore in the books - funny, whimsical, mysterious, calm, but could also be serious and stern. Gambon's portrayal was kinda creepy and eccentric in certain ways. He acted panicky and scared in quite a few moments and that just isn't Dumbledore. Instead of being a little quirky, he was often downright weird. Even the way he dressed dramatically changed. Again, his performance wasn't bad, but if you knew the books, it just didn't feel like the same character. This can kinda be compared with Gene Wilder' Willy Wonka and Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka. Wilder's was funny, whimsical, but did have an air of mystery about him. Then we get pedo Wonka. Downright creepy and weird.

"Can you imagine Harris fighting Voldemort?" Yes. Dumbledore was never supposed to be aggressive or strong, or passionate. He was supposed to be a calm, positive and paternal figure, who never freak out without a real reason. He would've never shout "silence" at his students, because his figure alone commanded silence and respect. Voldemort was scared of his power, not of his ability to shout angrily at students.

I have read all the books several times and i still enjoy Gambons portrayal much more than Harris. Yes Harris was very good in his portrayal. But i dont think it would fit the last movies if he played Dumbledoor, simply due to the darker nature, which is not that existent in the first movies.
@SuperSparrow45
@SuperSparrow45 5 лет назад
That's pretty pompous of you to claim that. Being true to the source material doesn't always equate to better. I liked Harris' funny, calm and whimsical demeanor, but as someone else stated, he just didn't appear at all imposing or intimidating, which as the most powerful wizard in the world, you kind of have to have that imposition. Richard Harris in his later career was more softly spoken and brought suspense and calmness. Which is one good aspect of Dumbledore, but he lacked the assertion needed for the later movies that would be considerably darker than the first 2. He just lacked the sternness you claim is important. I'll start by saying I didn't like Gambon in Prisoner or Goblet of Fire. I think he was too angry and oftentimes would either be completely uncaring or aloof if he wasn't shouting. It was in Order of the Phoenix where he calms down a bit and his wittiness, eccentricity and imposing demeanor come to the forefront. He is probably the best part of the 5th movie. Then in the final 3 movies, he calms down even further and provides the necessary exposition, which obviously he is scaled back in focus for the deathly hollows (what with being dead and all). Overall, this all could've been remedied if Sir Ian McKellen didn't turn down the role of Dumbledore (and we can thank Richard Harris for him not taking the role).

You all sit there blaming Gambon but what you fail to see is that he was only doing what he was told, he is a very talented actor and can play any role perfectly. Dumbledore's not supposed to run around shouting and being commanding, because he never *needs* to. He can establish all the power and control in the world just by walking into the room and speaking; he doesn't throw it around, her radiates it. In fact, when he does start becoming more snappish and stern in the final books, it's a grim reminder of just how serious things have gotten.

Harris' dumbledore however was just like he was in the book, he was calm and graceful but also whimsical and humourous. He made dumbledore feel like a special person, which he is. He commanded respect, and despite being old and frail you can sense he was really powerful. The trouble with Gambon is he tried to be too different from Harris.

After he said that to all of the students, That's where Harry was trying his best to have a conversation with Dumbledore, Dumbledore hears Harry's voice as he says to himself by going, "It's Harry, I have to get out of here. Fudge wants me to ignore him." because Fudge tells him that he is not allowed to talk to Harry. It looks like Dumbledore doesn't care about everything. He doesn't care when Malfoy says his only line to Harry that he is going to Azkaban after he uses the Patronus charm to get the Dementors away from Dudley. I noticed that they were laughing as they walked away. Harry orders Malfoy to stay away. I was going to be worried that Malfoy was going to race back into Harry's side as he tells him that he is not going to stay away. He was going to say, "No Potter, I am not going to stay away, I can pick on you whenever I want. The one thing that you're not going to do is telling Dumbledore about this because everything that I said to you is true. So I am right and you are wrong because you are going to Azkaban for good." I can tell that they are very excited that Harry has been expelled from Hogwarts. But it turns out that he is not going to be. But one of the weirdest scenes is when Ron got mad at Hermione's cat again. I thought Ron was being told to leave Crookshanks alone. Because Hagrid told him not to mention the cat again. But Ron didn't care. It looks like Ron will be saying, "Forget what Hagrid says, I am going to get mad at that cat again." because he was mad over the fact that he had eaten the ear.

I think each situation must be taken into its own matter of context. Most people are angry because of a reason. Harry means a lot to Dumbledore, and the other way around. Dumbledore's anger, can in most cases be explained with the danger that comes as a consequence of a recent act, or like in the end of Goblet of fire, a warning. Harry was standing where the crate's cap, was about to turn, when the crate got opened. And on the fake Moody, well, the imposter, being a danger to everyone around him, except the "dark side"

It was singularly bad in Goblet of Fire, especially when compared with the same scenes from the book. He never loses his cool or yells at Harry. He asked Harry just once if he'd put his name in the goblet, very calmly, and believed Harry when he said no. Most commentators blame the director, who only did this one Potter film.

I think Dumbledore only gets angry because he’s in situations where he doesn’t know or isn’t sure, just like how Harry’s name was in the goblet, or (spoilers) Dumbledore not knowing it was Crouch jr as Madeye.

I think the second Dumbledore was perfectly played. He had more passion, he had more strength, more depth and he was certainly more combat ready...and he liked his brandy too! Most people would've like to meet and hang out with this Dumbledore. The original Dumbledore was too uptight, too royal looking and too royal sounding.

I wouldn't say perfectly played, but yeah a lot of the things you mentioned were things about Gambon that I loved that I wanted more in Richard Harris' portrayal. You couldn't really imagine the Richard Harris version coming to Christmas dinner wearing a flowery bonnet, but Gambon (especially in the third film) yeah, probably! When Gambon was called to do the quirky Dumbledore, or Dumbledore in combat or on a mission, he was great. I had more problems when he was called to be kind and caring, a parental figure to Harry, or the Dumbledore who would just spend his free time in his study with his books. Nitpicking but I also sort of wish they didn't take away the glasses too, somehow they added to the character's charm. And I think even the warm, appealing quirkiness that I loved so much in the third film went away pretty quickly. A lot of that was in the writing and directing, though, the way they chose to do his scenes. Hell even the cinematography and the music, the atmosphere never felt safe in his office after the second film. In the books, it was always a massive relief when Dumbledore showed up but in the movies, it was more often a sign that things were about to get heavy. Plus a lot of his wisdom and just the overall poetry of his dialogue was more and more cut to essential plot stuff so the impression became a little more cold and calculating to me. It was a mix of things, they just stopped making the time or gearing the scenes in a way to show different parts of his personality, to show his true affection and concern for Harry along with the darker stuff, and when they tried it wasn't always that successful or endearing ("You need a shave" and stuff like that, idk). Even though his performance in HBP was quite good, by the end, even though McGonagall says at the end that Harry meant a great deal to him, even though Dumbles himself says it at the end of OOTP, I can't say that I really felt it like I did with Richard Harris. With Gambon, I don't think he really captured that until the King's Cross scene in Deathly Hallows.

I disagree, but mostly because he was so different from the books. Like in the scene when he asks Harry if he put his name in, in the book it specifically said that he was calm not angry and shouting, but hey that's just me

Nah man, Gambon's Dumbledore was combat ready.. ALL THE TIME. Which he didn't need to be. Dumbledore IS supposed to be a royal looking and sounding man. People look up to him, not feel like grabbing drinks with him. This aura makes him all the more epic when he very rarely shows his ferocity (in duels) or in his light hearted moments.

Michael Gambon didn't read the Harry Potter books, of course he doesn't understand Dumbledore! The most annoying thing is he isn't even a bad actor, he just really misinterprets the character. RIP Richard Harris, the true Dumbledore
@dlh7989
@dlh7989 8 лет назад
+Kerry Bonicel The only problem is that Richard Harris didn't read the books either. He said so during interviews for the first film. Yet he was an amazing Dumbledore because he had that naturally softer voice, and Chris Columbus really understood the character and the screenplay was closer to the book. I do wish Gambon read the books because maybe he could have stood up against some of their bad decisions. A lot of the lines and things that they had him doing were just plain not Dumbledore, even the less angry ones like asking Harry if he was dating Hermione. More weird and awkward than caring. But that's the whole problem because the screenwriters and directors obviously DID read the books yet they hardly seemed to get the character either. But Gambon is a very good actor, miscast as Dumbledore but he did have moments in each film where I thought "Yeah, he could have been great." But there were always moments as well where he was too angry or cold or serious without any charm or kindness.

And I wish I could find this again, but a while ago I found a little comic (I think on deviantART) comparing the book version of Dumbledore to Gambon's version during that part in GoF. Gambon was drawn looking like he was having a seizure, screaming, "HARRY DID YA PUT YOUR NAME INTO THE GOBLET OF FIYAH??!!" That had me on the floor!

I just don't think everyone realises that Dumbledore once trusted Tom who also was a young boy with a dark past just like Harry whom he trusted, and look what happened, I think dumbledore giving Harry angry treatment is more of a fathering thing, and a way to ensure Harry doesn't follow the same fate as Tom.

That's why Richard Harris was the man. Never liked the movies as much as the books, but I have to admit, the casting was about as good as it gets, originally. Richard Harris made for an almost perfect Dumbledore. Gambon, not so much.

All of this mess is the fault of DIRECTOR, and I don't know what J.K.Rowling's role in making film is, but how could she let HE played such an disturbance disappointing Headmaster. His action reveal an full of fear, hot head-ed and feeble old man. He completely destroy our feelings, our faith as well.

I mean, in the books, yes, he's calm and old-wise-man like, but I like the practicality of the movies. After all, this is the wizard whom Voldemort fears the most! He looks rather more active, energetic, dangerous. And when he says that line, "Don't you all have studying to do?!" it shows real emotion. Like, come one, the man lost a sister, have seen friends die on the hands of Voldemort, and by his never-to-be lover, Grinderwald; and on top of that, he has to deal (during OfP) with the ineptitude of the Ministry of Magic, with his reputation and Harry's being reduced to nothing, and with the MoM coming to Hogwarts to take control, fire his teachers, not teach defense at all. Wouldn't anyone with a bit of humanity be frustrated at all during that specific scene? Plus the students were just watching some senior teacher crying because she just got fired... like, damn it might not be JK Rowlings' Dumbledore, but sure it's a much more realistic approach.

Mostly and Most Importantly, Richard Harris' performance possessed a stately style and full of knowledge style, a calm old man but the most wisdom wizard, friendly but powerful ... That's all of which Sir Michael Gambon's Dumbledore does not reveal "the perfect synchronization of those opposite special traits" - which make Dumbledore a best "place" of safety and faith to any of us, J.K.Rowling's readers. :) Sir Michael Gambon's Dumbledore made noise sometimes he is ignorant angry like a child
