Is this the end of the line for 70013 Oliver Cromwell? With an expired boiler certificate it needs a complete rebuild. Owners, The National Railway museum, seem unsure about what to do next. Will we see Angry Olly at speed on the mainline, throwing its toys out the pram and shouting at people with that urgent shrill strident scream? Here is a small tribute to its mainline career in restoration.

*Was running on the Great Central (Leicester/Loughborough) last year and far more 'wear & tear' stopping and starting, never designed for such use. It belongs on the Main Line and running at speeds it was designed for.*

@grrr, it doesn't matter what it was designed to do 100 years ago! It's an antique! And as such should have been serving slower needs, just a few miles an Hour would have made all the difference in the world!

Hi there my real Name is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of us Class 507, Class 508, Class 313, and Class 314 and that also includes those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 507, Class 508, Class 313's Class 314 including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them. Including the refurbishment into the Volvo TD102KF Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Scania N112 Engine, Leyland 510 Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner LG1200 Engine, Gardner 6LXB Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 507, Class 508, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314 and Class 315 Diesel Train Fans PLEASE? Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty Please.

Great ! Appreciate the way you've edited. Most film makers wait for every coach/wagon to go past and then continue filming till the last one disappears round a bend half mile further on. Can be so boring.

Is the service you are talking about passenger service? The last services to be hauled by steam were in the North East, and it wasn't Oliver Cromwell that hauled them.

I remember ‘Ollie’ coming through my home town a few years ago. I was at work & convently my workplace is next to the station. My manager very kindly let me have an extended tea break so that I could see it pass through. I have never forgotten it’s power & that whistle.

I still love watching your films about the steam engines. This week 6201 brings memories to my firing in 1947 At Crewe 5A. I fired it a few trips but I think the oiling it under the boiler in the dark was the worse engine. I had 6206 from Carlisle back to Crewe.. I am now 87 years old, and loved it all about the drivers, my Dad was 49 years firing and driving at Crewe.. love to see it again . Geoff Hillyard. That smell of oil and steam .

I did see 46206 (Princess Marie Louise) probably at either Nuneaton or Rugby in the mid 50's - always my favourite locomotives and arguably the best ever made by LMS, except perhaps the 'City's' / 'Coronation' Class. A terrific record of the power and grace of this lovely locomotive. As mentioned in other comments you have done well to maintain a constant stream of high powered images and sounds which I know from experience takes a lot of research, legwork and patience. Ollie is doing well in the shed at Loughborough when I looked in today but I won't be reprising the descaling of the inside of the tender tank as I'm ten years older than when the job was last done!

That's one powerful Loco, seen it many times during my younger days at Wigan on its way North to Scotland, it would be a shame if it wasn't renovated and returned to main line work.

My old man was a driver at Stratford. He was on the Liverpool street to Norwich run. He loved brits, his favs (and he claimed the fastest) were 70037 "hereward the wake" and 70007 Coeur de Lion

MrKnowwun , I’m sure that I’ve heard or read that Coeur de Lion was always reckoned to be a special loco , I used to spot them at either Bishops Stortford or Chelmsford in my youth . As they were used across the country I never saw the whole class regrettably .

Great video. Ollie is a fine engine that deserves to run again. The last time I saw it was in Thetford Forest on route to Norwich and the sound of its whistle echoing through the woodland was magnificent.

@@vicsams4431 It was indeed Santon Downham. We often had picnics near the level crossing or at the nearby St. Helen's picnic site before all the nice bits were blocked off (by English Heritage?) and thus ruined. There are still good locations for videos and photos, however.

As a boy, I loved Santon Downham . We used to have a picnic at the level crossing. Walk the trails. Look at the fish in the River Little Ouse. Have an ice cream at the post office in the village. Before the Forestry Commission built the visitors centre @ 1975 there used to be a large wooden barn type structure my Dad used to joke was built by the Vikings. The bridge over the river was in the style of a railway bridge. It was not until decades later that I discovered it was part of a narrow gauge timber railway from the 1920s.

For me there is just something beautiful about old steam engines as they run down the track!! Perhaps it is the beat, or the hiss of steam as the slow or speed up!! Maybe it is the view of the could of smoke in their wake, but I miss being around steam engines and the elegant simple way they travel as they work!!

Steam trains may be noisy rattly and make a mess , but the modern sleek quiet smooth running modern trains do nothing for me I miss the trains of my youth I felt that I’d made a train journey other than a trip.

In style and nostalgia, yes. In practicality and ease of use, no. That's why diesels are here now and most steam engines are in museums or have been scrapped.

💖 LOVED this! I've only "met" Ollie once, that being at the GCR Gala Day in August last year to commemorate 50 years since the end of regular BR steam. I quickly took a liking to him! Let's hope that the overhaul and financing thereof, are a key topic for the NRM's first Board Meeting of 2019! I'm an Aussie that loves British steam - I'll kick in a few Pounds if needed!

My favourite engine I never forget the time I was on board a rail tour from king's cross to skegness coming out of king's cross we hit gas works tunnel went in white when we came out I was black cos of the soot lol

At the risk of sounding like a neophyte, what’s problem? I know boilers need to be overhauled every few years for mainline work, and I know whilst the NRM own Ollie, it’s been actually prepared and looked after by the 5303 Locomotive Association. So is it the case that the 5303 LA can’t overhaul her unless the NRM stump up the cash and the NRM won’t? Has there been a falling out between the two and the NRM want to take their ball home? What gives?

5305 LA only have it on a 10 year loan agreement for care and maintenance. The NRM own it and have yet to decide to renew the loan, finance the overhaul or even keep it in the national collection. There is talk of a static exhibition. 5305 cant do it on their own.

MrKnowwun cheers for the info. Pity if it does get stuffed, as there’s loads of stuff at both York and Shildon that will never steam again they can exhibit. It’s a shame to let one that can be overhauled relatively easily go to waste.

It's tricky to say what sort of condition the boiler is really in. Despite having chemicals in the water to slow down corrosion it still happens and over time the boiler metal gets thinner to a point where the boiler is condemned. Then the only way forward it to make a new boiler as there is no alternative unless a spare boiler can be found somewhere. Usually if a new boiler needs to be constructed then a new firebox and smoke box is constructed with it. However the cost for a new boiler alone is astronomical. I think the one thing that people don't wish to think about is that all preserved steam engines in the future will need a new boiler at some stage.

If is going to cost that much to repair why not offer it to the public in the way of shares, there is a huge interest in this locomotive and I'm sure people would love to have shares in it if they were given the chance.

I must admit that I took exception to your response . We have many excellent steam loco engineers in this country keeping many steam locos in very good working condition .

Eh?...do you ever recall seeing any of the Brits in service? Even Brittania herself has sounded off on more than one occasion! This footage shows and we can hear that a Brit doesn't have to sound rough when looked after properly. If that doesn't make sense then I don't know what does? Where was the reference to anything other than a Brit? I could have said 9fs always sounded rough, but considering what they were put through that is hardly a surprise. When these engines were in daily service, they never received the kind of attention they get these days did they, hence my comments about a bag of spanners. Is that not clear enough?

You can see why steam reached its limits - the stresses on the reciprocating parts must be getting close to failure.

In this vid its not seen at more than 75MPH, Britannia class locos had 6'2" driving wheels for mixed traffic speeds up to 90mph. A4 class locos, designed to haul fast passenger only up to 100mph had 6'8" driving wheels. Bigger the wheels the slower the motion has to go.

From what you can see at 2:55, just put the loco on the front of a train and have it pushed around the country by a diesel with out a fire in its belly!!

You can clearly see it with steam emitting from the safety valves. The diesel is there to provide power for the coaches and backup incase the loco were to run into difficulties

they should overhaul Cromwell! fantastic locomotive to be on the Mainline, and let others see one of the engines from the 15th Guinea from 1968. met this loco 3 times and its a treasure to meet.

Closest I got to Ollie was at Bressingham, the tiny trundle up and down their 100 yards of track back in the 70’s/80’s. Then I see I missed the specials with Sir Nige out of Bishop’s Stortford. I saw Sir Nige in the sidings didn’t know Ollie was also there, that was in the 90’s. It’s true that steam engines are special and famous and named locomotives even more so. My favourite locomotive is Sir Nige but Ollie is right up there with regards to having my affection, a strange thing to have, affection for a large piece of metal you don’t even own.

Scotsman is theoretically the only surviving GNR Pacific. She was 95% complete at the time the LNER was born. Much as I love the A4s, I'd happily lose one (not 4468) to have Great Northern preserved. Seeing the various guises that A4s and the Bulleids wear at times, I'm surprised 4472 has actually acted the part of 1470 occasionally. The plates are intact at York...

If you take Tangmere* out of the mix, its been my favourite loco, always puts on a show, and if it cant do that it will substitute drama. *Tangmere, now there is drama and crisis by the bucket load.

I had the honour and immense pleasure to be on her last trip from London Liverpool Street to Norwich, however she failed around Tivetshall and was shoved by the Class 47 on the rear. The sound she made was truly superb and her acceleration up Bethnal Green Bank put many a Class 90 to shame. I first met her at Bressingham in the mid 1970s as a shy lad that was offered a footplate ride, but I was too shy to say 'yes'. It remains one of life's greatest regrets !

Many, many years ago as a wee boy (about 8yrs old?) my father and I were taken around the Norwich Thorpe Sheds by our friend 'Uncle David' who worked as a firebox cleaner but standing on the ground beside a Britannia I was so terrified I stubbornly refused to go up into the cab! Another life long regret. :-)

@@jcmgt Thanks for your reply. That sounds just like what happened to me at Bressingham in the early 1970s. They were selling footplate rides for 10p (2s) but I was too afraid to go up on the footplate. So I missed the opportunity to ride on 70013's footplate. If it is any consolation, I did ride the N7 tank from Marks Tey to Sudbury. It was so cramped and so hot. There is nothing to stop you falling out, and you have nothing to hold on to, with loads of others all in there too. I was wary to grab any pipework to hold onto, in case it was red hot. I have not been on a steam loco footplate since. I prefer diesel locos and electric locos. I have ridden in the cab in Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Austria and Canada. The Hungarian driver even insisted that I drive !

They are rebuilding a few trains at Loughborough when I was there, too. They are not the owners but they work on multi operators trains.

Well Paul, you certainly have a point. I have never had the pleasure of hearing an American or Canadian steam whistle other than on film, and they certainly sound awesome. I have, however, ridden behind Cromwell which certainly makes me thoroughly biased. I suspect the preference is a matter of personal choice but I might be open to persuasion!

08:30-08:45 Should be The Broadsman not The Cathedrals Express. Any weekday afternoon in the 1950s at about 16:20 through Kelvedon, after school to see what was for a short while, the fastest timed train in the country. Take away the cars and catenary, substitute dark blue station signage, oil lamps and blood and custard coaches and I'm 10 again. The past really is another country.

I'm a lifelong model engineer having constructed 7 coal fired passenger hauling locos, 5 in 5in gauge and 2 in 7.25 gauge. They burn anthracite coal which is classed as a smokeless fuel, it burns very hot and clean with little or no smoke. I have had people ask me if my engines were electric or even clockwork. We have some very high quality coal in Wales but these mines are now closed over green issues and we import sub standard coal from abroad😢

I remember the old steam trains. Most ended up in the graveyard at barry docks where I lived. I use to play on them when I was a kid. I remember people saying there’s diesel trains coming. Couldn’t wait to see one. Then all of a sudden, the steam trains disappeared and the novelty of the diesels, soon warn off

I hope we’ll see it thunder along the mainline metals again. I have fond memories of being one of the Young scared children as 70013 tore through Ely in the early 90’s. Funny enough, it failed shortly after I saw it that day! Lovely collection of videos of another of our fantastic steam locos. I was so born in the wrong decade. 🙄

Most express locos had wheels 6'8" dia. The Brits were mixed traffic locos, and only had 6'2" wheels, hence the faster "revs" of the driving wheels

Fantastic , my late Dad worked at Stratford and in the steam days his regular loco was 70040 "Clive of India" , running the Liverpool Street to Norwich main line.

Snap, My dad, Joe Painting, was a driver at Stratford, doing the same runs., His Fav was 70037 "Hereward the Wake". He cried the day it shed a rod up North somewhere, and was towed to the scrap line.

She was never denied by her staff working hard by the looks of things, what a splendid roar this engine creates, the Brit and standard 4MT tanks are the best standard designs in my opinion.

9F was a very, very special design. The neglect they suffered through almost all their lives, and yet they made the 'long drag' look easy, despite ridiculously heavy loads. It's a pity that freight locos are so often overlooked. There was also the case when King's X Top Shed had to supply a loco for a Royal train at short notice. All the Pacifics were out and about, and the only 'big' loco available was a 9F. Apparently, even with her little 5' 2" wheels, she topped 90mph... And the Royal was NOT a lightweight train!
