That highway code rule relates to side roads that you're turning into. There is however general guidance that you must give way if it can help avoid an incident. Nothing about MUST STOP though. You're making stuff up.

700 people are KSId every year on the pavement by drivers. The risk from bad cycling on the pavement is at least negligible from that. As for calling him anything - I only reflected his own bigotry back at him with a car centric equivalent. I hope you can see the analogy now.

Yeah, I was wrong even in the "old" highway code. I guess I too am too car-centric. Pedestrians are the top of the road hierarchy. I've realised my expectation of him waiting for the cyclist to cross there was wrong. He was being an arse though, blaming all cyclists for that one bad one. That's what I objected to the most.

Also, he might just be frustrated at the fact that cyclists can ride on pavements, pass red lights, drive on opposite sides of the roads and more and that they won't get prosecuted the same way a car would so his frustration is understandable

Bonkers new rules in the highway code but am about to learn it properly as have my motorbike theory test soon. A lot of us bikers view it as potentialluly getting us rear ended more. Pedestrians in my opinion should walk further to find pedestrian crossings.

The amendments to the Highway Code actually start on 29 January.

According to the highway code, the pedestrian is at the top of the hierarchy, yes but they also have a duty of care to them selves, and as he was safe in the middle of the road at the traffic Island he had no more right than anyone else, as this is not a pelican or zebra crossing. This is what a lot of the motorist were concerned about, ie can a pedestrian just walk out into the middle of a road when its full of flowing traffic and expect everyone to come to a halt, I think that is unreasonable. Having said that, at 0:30, the man in question and two other pedestrians are already/just starting to cross when the silver crossover starts to turn down that road, here the car does have to give way, even stop. In my opinion, and happy to be proved wrong, that cyclist currently and previously did not have to give way, nice if they did, but not HAVE to. Daft few other cyclists crossing the pavement and the kid doing a wheelie, well its a kid for flips sake.

I never realised how complex driving and road laws are, and then I started cycling again in 2003 and I haven't stopped learning since. I was wrong here about the pedestrian not having priority.

I get the pedestrian to hgv heirarchy, and oeds crossing junctions cars turning in need to stop - this works so well in Japan to be fair and if everone does it there is no real risk of getting rear ended. @@CyclingMikey Just as anywhere, having the right of way doesn't trump using situational awareness and giving way if it means you don't end up in an accident. If you're a pedestrian, you are almost certainly going to be the loser in an accident with any vehicle.

Bad cyclists give only themselves a bad reputation. People only use that sort of lazy bigoted thinking when they are referring to a minority. He doesn't do it to drivers, pretty much nobody does because it's stupid and wrong.

This obviously shouldn’t be the case, but people generalise; if you run into bad cyclists all your life you are going to generalise and believe that all, if not most cyclists are bad. Of course you should judge every individual based on each individuals own actions, but that doesn’t happen. The man in the video isn’t saying that he agrees with that notion of generalising, quite the opposite in fact. I agree AS - it was making small talk and it didn't need to escalate like that. In the same way some will say 'that idiot gives delivery drivers a bad name'. That is also correct - some delivery drivers are for example terrible drivers. Some are not. Yet there can be a tenancy to assume most are bad drivers. In this situation perhaps just a 'Hopefully the rest of us cyclists show we're not all idiots like him. Have a good day mate.' would suffice. You don't know he doesn't do that about drivers - that's could be said to be an equally invalid assumption. Your content is ace, and really important in helping keep people safe, and get bad drivers punished.

You’d need another DVLA to administer it. No one is going to pay for that.

They should be following the traffic laws too. Considering the tight confines of a lot of roads there, I see no reason cyclists shouldn't have to pass road tests as well. Would probably cut down on accidents which they almost always come out the loser in.

People are odd like that. It's like the insulate britain protests that held up junctions for an hour - almost everyone was in a rage about it. Vigilante mode. And this was a handful of senior citizens concerned their grandkids would face hardships (war, famine, mass migration) due to climate change. I personaly are glad some people care. Conversly, this week the M6 in the midlands has been blocked by accident 4 days running - one lasting 6 hours. Nobody bats an eyelid over the dodgy drivers causing death and holdups of 6 hours... as long as they aren't doing it to save the planet!

This. Some cyclists are dangerous but they'll never be as dangerous as if they were in a car or van.

I'm not from South Africa, and Merv knows that a) I'm diabetic so am immunosuppressed and b) the young lad I work with has Downs and is also immuno suppressed. I've spent the entire pandemic being super careful.

I live in a rural area, & just witnessed a group of cyclists, one of which was on his phone & the same time as being a (model) cyclist. My job means i have taken various driving courses, as a professional Chauffeur i see at first hand absolutely appalling driving up & down the country. I would certainly be happy to pay a small road tax as a bike rider. I realise that will never happen, because cycling as now become king.

The police I'm sure prioritise murders over shoplifting, why wouldn't Mikey prioritise cars which kill thousands a year over cyclists which are relatively harmless. (How harmless, in a typical year more people are trampled by cattle and die than suffer a fatal injury from a cyclist.)

Riding on a bus changed my perspective. You get a great view from a front seat of the whole road I saw how common inconsidsrate and dangerous driving was. I also saw how close cars and some buses get to cyclists. The slipstream parts their hair! I cant count how many times I've seen cyclists go up the kerb or jump off to avoid a car passing too close. I give much more space now and am aware of them when turning. Cycle lanes are a must. But equally cyclists who ride the pavement right next to a cycle lane get my goat too!,
