I love this camera angle. It makes me feel like Rudy is some kind of alien collector and I'm placed on his shelf as a valuable collectible to be oogled and ranted at.
I second this!!! Rudy you should for all future serious rants like this one do this camera setting. I personally love it. As much as I do your opening with comedic relief and keeping things light hearted to bring us way up to soften the blow when you unload the hard hard necessary to be heard truth. Mad respect man. You inspired me to push harder on not just my TCG in the works, but in my desired RU-vid-ing and Podcasting passions, in my work ethic when it comes to fighting for us, the people, and just in my life all together. Don't stop doing these kinds of videos. I for one CANNOT get enough of them (as selfish as that may sound I only say that cause I personally can see that I do not stand alone in that thinking) and the world Needs a good Effin dose of Hard Truth now more then ever. Mad mad love and respect my guy!!! Keep up the passion.
"you people are so wound up in the noise and the smoke, you don't see the empire being built behind the curtain" This sums up the state of the world in 2021
I live right next to Star City Games stores. They used to be Star City Comics back when I was a kid. Now they are stocking comics again, just changed their sign to Star City Games and Comics.
Lmao, let’s not kid ourselves. We’d all act like greedy ravenous cunts and screw “the heart of the cards” the moment we saw a good deal on cards/product. The truth is people like Rudy are just mad they’re being cut off from the golden goose and his minions blindly agree with him.
@@LoveStrangeDr except he isn't being cut off because he said in the video you didn't watch he isn't a wpn store and he is still selling sealed product. If there aren't any stores to go play at why in the hell would I buy cards ?
@@chrisestes859 i did watch you complete dunce. He’s not receiving the same allocation of product he once had, therefore it’s being reduced. 90% of Magic players do not play at a store, they play kitchen table Magic. Only the gatekeepers do.
Legitimate question : What will happen if stores and players all leave Magic and move to other card games? is it possible ? Or at least they leave Modern and only play the old cards. Voting with their wallet etc
@@jackytan378 The company would change course or fall under. Not likely to happen because as much as I hate what WotC/Hasbro has done to the game I love, there will always be new kids growing up and checking out the game and getting hooked. In today's society, WotC's catering to the "woke" left means they will have some truly fanatical fans that will cling to the game with support like leeches.
Instead of sitting the at home with loved ones fighting hunkering through the storm, Rudy is at his store with his loved ones waiting to bolt any faithless looters to hit his store.
Buylist prices for singles have been cut by at least 30% across the board. Not only that, quantity of mediocre older cards that are wanted have dropped too. Stores are tightening their belts.
The smoke and mirrors, financial trails extend well outside of hasbro too. Corporations and Wall Street value profit over the well being of the consumer and small businesses. It’s on purpose... thanks Rudy for the thinking points.
How does the consumer get hurt in this one? The small businesses? yes, but the idea that this hurts the consumers is ludicrous. Cheaper cards hurts small businesses and as much as he makes fun of timmys notice he hasn't actually said how it hurts the consumer.... The answer is it doesn't. The funny thing is that Rudy actually knows its overall good for the consumer. The reason is he did it BEFORE Wizards did it! He cut out the overhead and cut out tournaments and all that jazz to sell direct to consumers, so he KNOWS it's good for consumers, he is honest that he's upset because Wizards is becoming Rudy inc. but at a larger scale.
@@czcbearsrule1 i suppose I really meant consumer investments in singles. If wizards can print directly to Amazon and they can have any single on demand, the single market is going to hurt small consumers short term and possibly long terms. It’s personally pushing me to offload my extra singles until the market has a definitive direction. Although I do agree with Rudy’s analysis.
Loving this content. I wish there were more hurricanes so you had more down time to do stuff like this. Just because it seems like the only thing that stops you from working is hurricanes.
It's 2030. You rent your Secret Lair Jeff Bezos Commander deck from Amazon. It's delivered to your habitation pod by drone. You're the happiest you've ever been.
Wizards thinks : 2020 had no events = still records sales But they're missing: 2020 record sales = people were buying in ANTICIPATION OF PLAYING AGAIN IRL
Or the 2020 sales have very little to do with the popularity of the game and have a lot to do with stimulus money and crypto at all time highs. You guys playing are not who wizards cares about, they care about their biggest orders. 2020 crypto at all time high 2021 crypto at about half its all time highs. Magic, same thing.
@@ishitrealbad3039 but even outside ot the US where no stimulus checks were issued by the government (writing from Europe here), the 2020/first quarter of 2021 saw a situation where due to lockdowns there were limited opportunity for spending money in entertainment (clubs, pubs and restaurants, cinemas, travlling, etc.), so some of that disposable income that could not be spend through those traditional means may have moved to TCGs. Of course without data to back it up, this is nothing more than an opinion and reality is much more complex (e.g. how much of the segments going out partying were the same buying MtG, etc.), but I believe it played a role in the overall record sales.
Here we are, the moment where Rudy decided that when he's finally done, he'll ship an actaul truck of vintage magic boxes to each lgs and cripple WotC's demand as the community swims in old school gold as prices race to the bottom. You think hes stacking these boxes up for himself? No sir! Its all part of a plan to someday destroy the remastered/reprint model by flooding their customers with the cards they actually want and forcing Amazon to sit on millions of unwanted boxes! I see what you're up to, Taco King!
Hey Rudy, LGS owner here. I agree with most of what you've said, with one main sticking point: I do think Magic is going to suffer from these choices in the long-term. We're already seeing some of the fallout playing out right now, cancelling their big flagship cash prize events has been disastrous for the player base around here. And don't get me wrong, I'm not mad or worried at all; all these guys are still giving me the same dollars every week, they're just buying Yugioh, Flesh & Blood, and/or Warhammer instead of Magic. It's definitely weird times, but I'm not worried about our long-term prospects at all, we're actually enjoying a hell of a growth year right now, we're just doing it while we're scaling back all of our Magic to basically Commander nights.
Definitely seems to make sense. Magic players are so loyal and invested they’ve got atleast 15 years of steady money coming in even if LGS get cut out.
im mostly in the pokemon community, but amazon consistently has issues with repacks, or damaged during delivery. i will never buy cards from amazon, they are completely incompetent.
@Helping Heroes Hatzidakis 3rd party sellers can have issues, most of the sellers are fine but I did order a sketchy batch and had to return because it was damaged as well as a poor repack job done. I find better results on ebay. Amazon themselves do not repack cards, that would be the 3rd party seller who does this. Find a reputable seller or two and stick with them.
I mean, I’d like to say ‘I told you so’, as far back as Throne of Eldraine, and then they reinforced it with Double Masters. Magic is no longer a CCG. It’s just a CG. Don’t waste your money.
Speaking of “collateral damage”… every single person sees no Pokémon, yugioh, dragonball, sports, or any other cards on the shelf, yet the mtg section is fully stocked and looking untouched. If that’s caused by Amazon selling a few bucks cheaper it’s a huge net loss to the game.
I believe you are right on target with these predictions. I have been talking to the owner of the local store I frequent and he has been saying that his supply has been getting cut into half every time he orders for the last two years. He will order X boxes and the supplier says great fantastic we got you, but when the day comes it’s always the same. Only gets half of what he orders( sometimes less). It’s just sad because all these shops are going to suffer the consequences. Always love your rants! Very insightful in my opinion 😎
So what you're telling me is, taco's can last at LEAST 5 years in the fridge? Nice. On a side note i appreciate what you do rudy. I know for a fact you don't need to make these videos but you do and it really helps out the little guy. You are an absolute gift to us that we don't deserve but you're here. But hey, if i could do the same i would too.
I knew something was up when they started pushing Secret Liars. They were targeting playable EDH cards and selling them for conveniently around their secondary market price. At that point they became direct competitors to the LGSs and I don’t think that’s a fight the game stores can win.
I totally agree. I have been telling people for years you can't play magic at Walmart or Target. Now it's you can't play magic at Amazon. Everyone needs to support their local LGS and not the big box companies!
I really believe Flesh and Blood has a chance to save the LGS scene. I picked it up a week ago and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to playing MTG competitively, and it feels like they’re doing things the right way
You are right. Problem is in the past when other games made a hard push WotC/Hasbro basically threatens and says carry them and you won't get anything from us again
@Dale Soulflare these other companies start, then collapse or slow down a few years into production. MTG is to big to fail. 28 years in the making is why they don't pull away from MTG
Magic is hurting the little stores to earn more money, but FaB isn't. FaB is new, they need to everything and almost anything to let the world know their products. FaB listens the market and people, but magic does not. That is the difference between 2 companies.
Smart moves by Hasbro, but I’m looking forward to MTG’s next weak set. They’ve been on a roll, but it will come to an end, and there will be blood. You kill all your friends, it cool, until you need them
You know what if all lgs stopped carrying magic product and just did every other type of card game as well personally I think its a great idea Rudy. But that kinda sounds like a boycott.
IT more sounds like a suicide move for your LGS. Because I am sure magic is their biggest revenue line may be only pokemon could beat magic in the numbers… but none others.
@@bccbcc3935 and what of the players, they should understand they are not being supported by Hasbro. Players should demand a change or then begin to recognize their money and attention is better earned by a different game/company, which your LGS would happily carry. The recent moves are moving to consolidation of profits under Hasbro/Amazon while continuing to exploit the secondary market through supplemental reprints sold basically as singles.
The only person on youtube willing to give an actual, business based approach to analysing this companies actions. All these other dorks dont think anywhere near this level, I dont think they want to.
Bingo. The reason I unloaded my collection. Became obvious we were considered sheep. Hasbro doesn't give two fucks about the player base or stores that supported them for 20+ years. It blows my mind.
I have not bought any magic since ikoria .. just got sick of the collector bud thing ….. I’m still amazed at how this stuff sells so much …. Like Rudy has said before . The average player life cycle is like 2 years .. maybe they turnover rate of fresh players keeps it going ?? Fuck if I know .. at This point I just don’t get the high sales …. Some times I wonder if they sales really are that high and product is that scarce ??? I still see older boxes online for sale quite often .. it’s just they creep up and up and little all the time
@@Wolfgar-jx5kl In my experience most players over time have phased in and out. I've been playing since before Ice Age and have quit and gone back multiple times. Many of the players I know and have known have similar stories. All the other tcgs I've enjoyed have either failed or gotten even more out of hand.
Nailed it. I stopped buying new product from WotC after Secret Lairs were announced out of principle and it kills me that so many people are so eager to dump their wallets out for Hasbro.
I always said the days of the “middle man” would be numbered. It was literally only a matter of time until they cut out the middle man, because let’s face it, a business is there to make money. And money always takes the path of least resistance, so I completely understand. That doesn’t take away from the collectibility of the product. Some items will always have larger print runs and there’s always going to be the few that get cut off early that nobody saw coming that causes a spike. The more things change, the more they stay the same. You taught me this.
Naw, if that was the case, Bezos would've had him written up mulitple times already for not filling any orders in the last 15 mins....either that or Rudy needs to sacrifice his bathroom breaks for the day!
The pandemic clearly showed them that that didn't matter one bit. Record sales anyways. Tournament players make up for an incredibly small portion of the revenue. It's all the Timmys that put the money in Hasbro's pockets. It's sad but that's what it is.
5 to 7 years ago I would have argued against your statement ... not anymore. I would have never guessed Magic would be in the current state it is in. Total disregard for the player base, fans, and store fronts that spread the game. It is so blatantly obvious that its all a cash grab at this point its sad.
@@o0QuAdSh0t0o Not really, the scalping has hurt that game tremendously and if they don’t rework their pull rates as well as the products for the TCG then that game will die as well, although it would take 10 years of that.
This is by FAR my favorite Rudy video!! Purely for the amount of swear words!! Shows how real and authentic he is! Keep it up Rudy! I love the content and messages!!
That actually sounds like a genius move from Hasbro. Why let someone else make all the secondary market profit when they can get in on it too? Rudy's part of the secondary market too, you want something from his stockpile? You pay secondary market prices too, that stuff is definitely not MSRP. Lol
The tropical storm gave me great surf here in Pensacola. If I make a trip to the east coast to surf I'll brink my Magic cards with me and try to hit you up. Hope that you fared well in that storm. Great video as always, Rudy!
Issue a small small amount to wholesalers and let them set the ridiculous high price from limited supply, sending demand through the roof. Wait 2-3 weeks for the new higher price to become the norm and then flood your Amazon channel with the full amount of supply. Take in the cash.
The beginning of Rudy’s exodus. He has always said one day he is gonna quit RU-vid. He has a plan. He’s giving us the subtle hints of the beginning of the end. Trying to ease us into no more videos.
I hope to God not. I think he will still be in discussion on investment and trading advice to help out the "Timmy's." The moral of his character is too good. The videos will less frequent and less about Magic. This is my opinion.
He has said in numerous videos that he isn’t going to do RU-vid forever. In a video a long time ago I’m pretty sure he said he had an exit time or plan or something to that effect.
Its amazing how much I disagree wtih Rudy on this particular aspect of MTG when I largely agree with him on most other things. Rudy's on point with MTG finance...no question about that. However this isn't MTG finance...this is WOTC making money while servicing the customer and giving customers a fair shake. You know what system was FAR FROM FAIR? LGS and MTG. Especially if you didn't live in a major city. Rudy either doesn't know about that or never cares to talk about it. WOTC going all in on Amazon is the best thing that could ever happen to MTG players who don't live in major cities. Just as an example...my local LGS could only acquire about 5 of each commander set within the first major release. Our store had at least 20 active commander players that I knew of and who knows how many others who just didnt actively play in store. Situations like this were common. Amazon and secret lairs change this. Most of us already had to resort to a place like Starcitygames or ebay but now we have a better option with more perks because of what surrounds amazon. It's a huge improvement for a significant amount of the player base. Rudy keeps talking about this like its crippling to LGS stores without explaining why. These stores carry a half dozen card games...most sell other things like anime figures, comics, board games, etc. How is this shift a big deal? You're acting like Walmart will fail if they can no longer sell their top brand of bed pillows. No...they'll simply have to adjust. Something stores do pretty regularly to keep up with the times. For fun: How many people would hate Rudy if he dropped mtg entirely? Not many. Have you seen the support and positivity your videos get on your thoughts and opinions over the years? Do you really not understand that people follow YOU and not just mtg? You'd probably lose far fewer than what you think.
damn straight about the "aha" moment. around seven-thirty. so they just opened the door, through their shoe in, opened the door a few weeks later and the shoe was in OK shape. epic.
I'd either get cards from other people or i just dont get cards... and would leave the game i guess... I hate amazon and will do anything to not support them.
@@LoveStrangeDr I brought my niece and nephew to the LGS. I wanted to buy a couple boxes of MH2 and split the cards. I’m not spending 50 sawbucks on that. I’ll wait till the end of the month and buy two D&DFR and spend 25. Kinda sucks because everyone seems to be dogging the set.
I love Amazon carrying MtG product . I have never gotten better deals. I bought Time Spiral Remastered at $150 a box and Commander Legends collectors box at $210 a box. I bought multiple of each. I preorder and Amazon always honors the lowest price during the preorder window even if I preordered at a higher price and my orders never get canceled. Plus I get Amazon cash back for orders with my prime card and get free shipping. I have paid lower than most of Rudy’s Patreon prices. Plus I get my orders in 24 hours. As a customer I can’t love Amazon more , best move ever.
@@thetoytrove754 I don’t play I only collect. I played from 1994-2000 when I switched just to collecting. Now I open just to chase hits and enjoy the art.
My kitchen table isn't at an lgs or at Amazon, and that's the only play I do. But Amazon has $100 jumpstart, $100 commander legends, $210 mh2 booster boxes. I'm not paying the 20% price hike to buy things at someone's tournament location.
My LGS is one of the rare few that sells MTG product at or near cost.5$ extra to do what I've always done, and get a promo? Fuck Amazon, they are part of the problem.
- a TB wouldn't let you eat BK in their store. - Brazzers would never let their sets be used for a RK clip w/o their name on titlescreen. - Kellog wouldn't run packaging on their lines for a competitor and stock that in their breakrooms. It only makes sense for a LGS to not use the often very limited space (and time of staff) for a game they want nothing to do with.
