Thank you for this excellent discussion. I've been trying for more than a decade to make sense of the anger, resentment and chips on shoulders all around, and here is a framework to work with 👌

People are angry because the elites have done a fine job of pitting ordinary working people against each other based on arbitrary issues. People have every right to be angry thanks to the sorry state the world is in, we just have to direct that anger at those who deserve it, rather than each other.

Great discussion and thought their ideas about sovereign wealth funds, ubi and direct central bank transfers to everyone to stimulate the economy in crises were spot on. The only reason (my cynical but also realistic self thinks) those ideas don't get implemented is because they actually benefit the general population and make the welfare of the people the central focus of the economy, whereas it is all currently geared to benefit the capitalist elites. That needs to change and I suspect will only change when we collectively express our righteous anger about economic inequality with as much intensity as is currently being expressed for other forms of inequality.

Interesting discussion … I suggest more part of an economics degree students should make a living from rubbish. Everywhere more and more people have to survive by picking "valuables" out of piles of rubbish while entire building are destroyed and the remains are dumped. Cars are scrapped. There seems to be a membrane between the people sitting in comfortable home confinement and those who go through the trash. How much of what we buy will end up being dumped without ever been put to the intended use?

i think anger arises from perceived impotence. when you see injustice and think 'i can fix this,' anger is minimal. society is organized so that almost everyone is politically impotent, so lots of room for explosions, but generally useless. i recommend democracy.

Interesting discussion, I only wish Mark Blyth had expanded on how we would sell our own data to the tech giants? It seems to me that this is completely out of the individual's control.

Righteous anger?

Trying to solve a crisis caused by too much financial power by consituting a sovereign wealth fund is idiotic. How about we not rely on financial markets and the people who got us where we are. To say they haven't heard a compelling counter argument to a national wealth fund is BS. Just look at all the corruption around them in Singapore and Malaysia

I live in a deprived Northern Community ( a former Labour stronghold) which never recovered from the decimation of our manufacturing based economy under Thatcher with the financial crash & austerity dragging us even further down. My tribe decided the ‘enemy ‘ was immigrants who were taking up scarce jobs for less pay, being prioritised for family housing etc . Despite the Government’s own estimate that Brexit would cause a 10 % decline in manufacturing causing yet more job losses in the Northern regions like turkeys voting for Christmas they voted ‘To Leave ‘ and for Boris seeing it as a solution to the regions problems -which undoubtedly get far worse due to the economic downturn & a possible no deal Brexit. It’s to simplistic to simply label such communities as ‘racist’ , although undoubtedly racism is a problem & I fear we will see more extremism over the coming years. Years of neglect through lack of investment have left these communities totally disenfranchised & Brexit was the ‘payback ‘ & although I personally this vote was misguided I can understand how it came about. I found the discussion engaging & felt the strategies they presented made both good sound economic sense and with the political will could feasibly be implemented and contribute to building a more equitable, sustainable society for all. What was missing for me ( & perhaps there is more in the book ) is that given that we are leaving Europe and looking at a further four years of Conservative rule is how on earth do we expect the Government to be persuaded to change their philosophy & adopt even a few of these radically new approaches to economic strategy ? Personally, I’ve had it with this country as feeling ‘morally outraged’ and out of step with the majority who believe In Brexit & Boris isn’t good for my health ! I hit 63 this year & have worked for 47 of those so I’ve recently decided to act quick before the Brexit drawbridge comes down & release my modest pension , sell my modest terraced house ( worth less than a shed in London) and go to enjoy a modest but hopefully enjoyable retirement in Spain.

This reminds me of John Osborne's _Look Back in Anger_ (1956/1959).

The only thing that i can think of that may stymie government asset giving is that. The majority of people will want to sell them straightaway. Some people will wonder what the asset scheme is all about and be so suspicious of it that they will shun it. Some people are not educated enough to understand the pros and cons of such a scheme and how to utilise these assets to their full potential. Am i foolish to suggest these points?

Anger isn't worth the time it takes to become angry. Every minute you spend being angry is 60 seconds you spend being unhappy. Besides, anger does more damage to the person who holds it that to the person they are angry with, they are listening to a great song.

The reason things don't change is because both political parties are happy with status quo. The right gets to block change and the left get to complain about what the right is doing. The other problem is not feeling feeling the pain that the average worker feels and because they are very well compensated and most are independently wealthy.

Frustration and despair of not believing in the fact that future generations will have better prospects than past. Why do you think that there are so many on prescription anti-depressants and self medicate with alcohol, drugs, etc

"I will give you a commission for your vote", is the only dialogue politicians want to hear from donors. Until recently, people who ran for office with selfless intentions, were crushed under the weight of their opponents war chest. Then came AOC and others onto the scene. Maybe it's a sign the shift has begun. But please, before you get ANGRY that I chose one example over many, understand I it's an example, it's not indicative of how I vote.

One thing that they didn’t cover is the uneasiness many (myself included) would have with the government being owners in private assets and companies. No one would care if Harvard’s endowment disclosed it owned 10% of the Washington Post. At the of the day, given Harvard’s role in society, it can’t do anything with that ownership stake. However, if the US treasury disclosed that it owns 10% of the Post or Fox News there would be a riot. The gov would be in a cartoonishly ridiculous position to influence peddle, kill stories, etc. I like the thought but practically speaking, ppl in the US would not be comfortable with the treasury being run like a hedge fund and buying ownership in companies off the open market. Heck, Americans aren’t comfortable with China owning Chinese public companies. This might sound obvious but just bc something works in Norway doesn’t mean it will work everywhere else. Norway doesn’t have near the same geopolitical pressures and responsibilities the US has. Nor does Norway have the tradition of corruption and meddling in foreign affairs. Can you imagine if the US gov own oil stocks during the Iraq wars? The American public doesn’t even trust it to administer social security effectively. The Federal Reserve system and US government haven’t earned the trust to pull something like that off. You want to see anger? Tell the American public that Secretary Mnuchin admin is playing in the stock market with tax payer money. 😂

I agree completely with their diagnosis of the problems, but their solutions are, to be frank, snake oil. Sovereign wealth funds?! Are you kidding? The problem is not that so many have so few assets, the problem is that we live in an economy that is structured so that one can only survive by accumulating assets. Why not imagine a society that doesn't require asset accumulation to meet basic human needs?

let's remember that it was tax payer subsidized research that created the internet and therefore we should be charging these tech companies for using our highway and not letting them avoid taxes too...in fact the whole world maybe should be paying us for using it....

A lot of the book is actully basic so called old fashioned common sense. And divide and conquer has been known about for millenia

Why anger? Answer:So many things...just...out...of...REACH. Greedy absentee landlords and invisible property speculators; spivs now in charge of utilities out for a fast buck, once run by civil servants who risked sacking if they screwed up; online algorithms that spew up a list of questions and ask which one you want to ask; a world of Big Money beyond the comprehension of anyone without an Economics degree... Isn't that enough?

I really wanted to take this seriously and give this a go, despite knowing that I'd likely disagree with the conclusions of the speakers. But given that it's only 7:45 in, and Mark Blyth has already tried to demonstrate his progressive virtues twice; once by suggesting that rich white men should not be listened to, or that their interests cannot be representative of the interests of the whole; and the other that Trump goes around calling all Mexicans rapists. What objective person can justify spending over 40 mins on what is likely a leftist justification of progressive anger, and a demonisation of white/working class/conservative concerns? Not me, thanks
