Here's a quick, simple, GROOVY quintuplet beat by Anika Nilles! Anika breaks the pattern down, gives a slick demonstration, then tells us how she originally came up with it.

I’ve watched this about 10 times now and tried this groove out - still can’t get it!!! It’s doing my head in! Still Anika did say it took her about a year to master?!

Wow I cant believe how beautiful that groove is..and the tighter sound of the kit really brings out how trippy this is.

The notation of the beat is wrong! In notes 2 and 4, there are the ghost notes on the snare with the right hand but she never goes to the snare with her right hand!
@martzy7536
@martzy7536 2 года назад
What do you mean ghost notes on the snare with the right hand? All the notes on the snare are played with the left, the notation is correct.
@pauluspagtakhan3351

The notation is correct. It's the sticking pattern they wrote wrong .

I love the part starting about 1:37 - that's where I went from the stress of counting to the joy of feeling the funk of the groove.

It would be sick if you could get Gavin Harrison on here :P.

Gavin will be in Canada this summer with King Crimson, but unfortunately no West Coast dates. Seattle, Washington is as close as he'll come. I was at his Sonor clinic at Metalworks in Toronto a couple of years back and it was absolutely awesome.

Wow that just clicks for me, I totally agree it’s much less stressful to play than a typical hi hat groove. Gonna go experiment with this 🔥

Very nice. Why is her left index finger not wrapped around the stick like most other drummers do? Isn't that a loss of control on the stick?
@caffeineadvocate
@caffeineadvocate 7 лет назад
Vincent Musolino - Probably a fan of Freddy Gruber (or Weckl, by extension).
@everydaylht
@everydaylht 7 лет назад
The stick is gripped between the thumb and middle finger. The back pinky and ring finger provide control from underneath, and the index finger provides control and feel from the top. I find it is a grip that allows my to play more relaxed and gives me more control over rebound.
@VincentMusolino
@VincentMusolino 7 лет назад
Very cool, I'll try it.

If you belong to Drumeo, Jai Es has a great series on Moeller that goes into this grip a bit.
@bonhzeppelin55

@@caffeineadvocate Sorry Mate I saw Bonham do this way, way, WAY before Gruber, Weckl, etc. Sometimes the index fingers get in the way, especially with French Grip perpendicular wrist position.

As a beginner drummer Im always just staring at her unconventional grip of the sticks, is she pinching it with the middle finger?

this can just be rewritten as a regular groove without any quintuplets. a "true" quintuplet groove would involve polyrhythms (e.g. hi-hat doing straight 8th notes while kick and snare remain the same).
@longdrums
@longdrums 7 лет назад
sorry mate but a quintuplet is just a group of 5 notes per beat. It's a subdivision that doesn't require a polyrhythm. just a pulse
@vinigretzky97
@vinigretzky97 7 лет назад
yes that's why i wrote "true". my point is that if you can rewrite it without using quintuplets and get the same result, it's kind of an irrelevant and artificial description.
@BOOM8883
@BOOM8883 7 лет назад
You* could play it as straight 16ths in a 5/4 time sig. But it's note the same, since that changes the pulse.
@JCarlosOrtiz1
@JCarlosOrtiz1 7 лет назад
Exactly. It's literally not the same.
@vinigretzky97
@vinigretzky97 7 лет назад
it's just a notation quirk. music is ultimately about sound, if two things sound the same, they are the same, doesn't matter how you write them down. i can't think of many people who have used "real" quintuplets right now (i think zappa did).
