It’s been 30 years since the original members of the Bones Brigade-Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero-gathered at the Chin Ramp. This piece includes interviews with the team, Chin Ramp builder Tim Payne, and photographer Grant Brittain, alongside several well-known pro skaters who were hugely influenced by the climactic scene in The Search for Animal Chin. Watch your favorite skaters rip the iconic ramp again, inspiring each other not only to recreate some of the timeless moments captured in the video from which it takes its name but to push each other to new heights as they continue the search for Animal Chin.
For more stories, more skaters and more more Chin, watch World of X Games’
“The Search is Never Over” on ABC November 13 at 4:30 pm ET.

Man, it’s been that long?! My first “pro” skateboard was a Tony Hawk mini...tracker trucks, rib bones, tail and a nose bone. Man I wanted that board to last forever. These guys were my idols. I still get all excited when I think of those days. And I still look at curbs the same way. A few years ago I was going into the Shoprite to buy some food and outside were some skaters. Me being like 40 at the time I saw them just like me and my friends those 25 years ago. One kid bumped into me said “sorry sir..” and then asked me for some change! I tried to stike up a convo with them about skating. They couldn’t believe that an old guy like me had broken in the very curbs they were skating on. Me and my friends would buy candles inside the grocery store and wax those curbs up and grind them til they were skateworthy. They looked at me like I was some kook. It was kinda sad really, I expected a different reaction kinda like “hey cool!” I walked away after giving the one kid some of my change feeling the shortsightedness of their youth. We were little shits in those days too! Always getting in peoples way, scaring old ladies, getting kicked out of parking lots. We thought we’d never grow up and skate forever. Some things never change.

Haha that's funny man.... I'm 46 and getting back in to skating. 20 years ago I started up again and the whole vibe had changed, the kids were way more negative and very unapproachable . The culture is changing again and that 80's and early 90's vibe is coming back . Im buying a shaped board and getting into shape, also my home town is building a new skatepark. My goal is to go back and skate my old spots😂

I am 43 now and haven't skated in almost 20 years but still have a shop deck in almost perfect condition from a local spot that closed well over a decade ago. Very good condition Independent trucks on it with excellent Powell Swiss Ceramics ABEC 9+ bearings. No clue what the wheels are, lol. I really should break that sucker out and push. Seeing vids like this really make me miss those insanely fun times with great friends.

In 1986, I was 12 years old, had a Valterra skateboard and didn't really know what really good skateboarding looked like. We lived Louisiana, so the videos took a while to get to us, and at that time you had to rely on your friends getting a VHS copy from another friend before you actually got to see it! So It was probably 1988 before I saw this video and we all probably have different emotions or memories of how we felt when first watching it but we all probably agree we loved it! Watching this short film on the 30th anniversary fills me with such happiness. The guys I have admired for so many years seem vulnerable, older and yet they offer no regrets they just get out there and skate! When my little girl is a bit older, I look forward to showing her The Search for Animal Chin and hope that she understands the message behind the film. Thank you Stacy, Lance, Tommy, Mike, Steve and Tony. You took me back to age 14 and a sense of simple enjoyment that I hope the younger generations can achieve. Kudos!!

don't let that stop you. I used to skate in February when there were still plenty of snow, salt, slop and everything else. LOL, who am I kidding? John Doe I know I shouldn't be complaining about the weather but it's hard to be motivated to skate when I get a mean indian tear after skating for like 5 minutes, then there's the fact I can't feel my feet when it's cold out and there's just a bunch of autumn to deal with, all the crap falling out of trees to add onto the broken glass, pebbles and grime that's just part of the occupational hazard of skating through a crusty city. I'll deal with it but I am not gonna be a happy camper especially when winter rolls around
@JohnDoe-le7ml

no worries man, just giving you a hard time. LOL, I shouldn't be though since I'm in the same boat. Weather up here in PA is the same deal. I almost cried watching this. What you all have meant to my whole life for these past 30 years, I can't begin to put into words. I know how modest you all are, simply because of the humility that you all exhibit. But you are my heroes. I loved my Guererro deck- it was my favorite deck of all time. And each one of you have distinct spots of overwhelming joy in my life. I can't begin to thank you all enough. BTW, you guys shredded that new Chin ramp!!!

I remember the first day I rode my red Guerrero deck with they yellow flames surrounding the dagger. Man, those were the days! First board was a Mark Gonzales, 2nd was a Christian Hosoi, 3rd was a Tony Hawk, and 4th was a Tommy Guerrero.

Steve Caballero my favourite skater since I was 12 back in 1988 and seeing real skating for the first time in Police Academy 4. I long since stopped skateboarding but still watch a lot and I watch this video with a tear in my eye and a smile in my heart. Look at their faces at the end, that is the meaning of life right there.

Im Stacy's age, and to see what the guys are doing on these ramps is absolutely awesome! It brings back memories of my youth!

Everyone that felt emotion from watching this has the fire of life, skating, and spiritual perseverance in them… We have been given skateboarding by the pioneers of the sport; we’ve carried the torch, passed it on, and the flame still burns bright in younger generations.
