With Centipede Hz, experimental music outfit Animal Collective is following its poppiest album, 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion, with one of its most hectic.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

My son, I love you. Please calm down. I understand you love this album. I love that you love this album. I celebrate your love. I'd throw a party for it if I could. I'm just not in love with it in the same way you are. I like it, but I don't LIKE LIKE it, ya know? I'm not taking this album home to mom. That means you can. Give love a chance. Understand. Put a ring on it. Diamonds are forever. This Hz to say, but it needs to be said. I didn't mean to Hz you with this review. Everybody Hz. Hz.

All very great albums, but besides maybe Strawberry Jam, hardly "classic" level in my opinion. Maybe that's just me though, considering I'm not as much as a diehard fan of AnCo as others seem to be. Merriweather and Strawberry Jam (the latter being my favourite) might be deserving of a review perhaps.

Wide Eyed is one of The Best tracks here. I'm not saying this because "HEY DAE LE DEAK GOD" but because I love that track. Deak's voice is weirdly soothing on this Song and the instrumentals are crazy. But instead of colliding, they weirdly coexist. BTW you should totally do Here Comes The Indian or Sung Tongs as a classic thanks fam.

Monkey Riches is my favorite song on the album. I feel like it finds its stride on that track and takes off at that point. Different strokes I suppose. I definitely agree that it's more brash and unrefined than MPP, but its still a fantastic album.

The first two songs in this album come in HARD, those songs slap. It def dips down a bit in the middle. I think it actually flows together pretty good as a whole, there is consistency in the sound but the sound is pretty one note, even if that note is chaotic. But I agree it's nowhere near the top of their discography. I think it is slightly under rated tho. I'd give it a solid 7 1/2. I personally think monkey riches and wide eyes are bangers. Especially wide eyes. In my opinion that song is hypnotic, and compellingly sexy. The feeling of that song is like locking eyes with your crush and realizing they giving you a sly grin.

i just listened to the whole album and it struck me as a more primal, melodically roped in, and psychedelic of Montreal style album, and i liked it, i liked the tunes and the production, and as much as i like good lyrics, i kind of dug the buried vocals you gripe about, it gives it that crazy folk rambling feel that i get from AC. i'd give it a 7 on a bad day

Depends on how good the car's speakers are, and they all have different frequency spectra so different sounds will be more obvious on different speakers. I just listened to it on some beyerdynamic DT 990 pros for the first time and I think that was a great way to listen to it, but I can see the extra feeling of bass from good speakers helping too.

Holy crap this album is good. I've been continuing to listen for 3 straight days now. I have been a fan since Indian Summer and have thoroughly enjoyed AC's progression and development both as a group and Solo work(aka Panda Bear/Avey Tare). At first I was super excited about the song 'supernatural' and then when I heard the first track, 'moonjock' I was even more excited. After several listens continually amazed at how AC manages to consistently communicate to me emotionally on a tribal level!

Here Comes The Indian was and still is their best work for me. I also agree with you! This album AT FIRST sounded like a mixture (To me.) of MWPP and Feels, but after I overheard most of the songs atleast twice, I heard it's difference. It's newer. More Tremolo/Flangered vocals, sounds more galactic, has more spacial sounds, and even has a NEW percussion sound. This whole album is amazing, it's on the verge of my favorite. c:

This ended up being one of my favorite Animal Collective albums. Father Time is a really fucking good song, and the first time I heard Amanita I was almost moved to tears at its climax. The other standouts for me are Today's Supernatural, New Town Burnout, and Monkey Riches. Feels will probably always be my favorite but this record's great. I'm still not really a fan of MPP; the poppiness makes it sound really dumbed-down to me (Taste is completely ruined by that stupid hook, for example)

I agree with you, Centipede Hz keeps getting better with each listen. Father Time and Moonjock are also great tracks. I don't know about MPP though, I think you should give it a few more listens. I don't think it's dumbed down, and the more you listen to it you will notice more and more of its depth and density, especially on songs like Brothersport or Also Frightened which are just rising until the very end. It's a phenomenal record. And yeah, Feels is my fav too. Spirit's a close second.

It infuriates me that people think MPP is not their best album. It objectively is. If you listen to the album from start to finish, it destroys the others. I'm not saying that the other albums are bad. Sung tongs, feels and strawberry jam are also brilliant and deserve their >80 scores. But I honestly just feel like people don't like MPP because it's not hipster to like it. How insecure can people be? MPP doesn't have one bad song, but the aforementioned have filler songs that don't need to be there.

I really love how fun CHZ is, I don't get why so many people dislike it. Fantano actually gave a better review than I expected considering the general reception I've seen. Honestly love CHZ about as much as MPP, I think MPP has much better GOOD songs (i.e. In The Flowers, Summertime Clothes, Brother Sport) but I enjoy every song on CHZ more than the tracks on MPP that I find to be more 'meh' (i.e. Guy's Eyes, Taste). Overall love them both and am looking forward to checking out all of anco's stuff over time.
@psychedelicpiper999
@psychedelicpiper999 6 лет назад
Same here. As a 60's psychedelic rock fan, "Centipede Hz" exceeded my expectations. They actually were influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and The 13th Floor Elevators, among other artists, during the making of this record. "Centipede Hz" bridges the gap between their early noisy experimental records, and their more refined pop records. If you're a real longtime fan of the band, I don't see how you can like "Danse Manatee" and "Here Comes the Indian", but dislike "Centipede Hz". That being said, I just as easily love "Merriweather Post Pavilion". To me, it's the very definition of what a modern pop record should sound like. "Taste" is one of the highlights for me actually.

I really love the album! I felt like it was more focused on the actual songs and vocal melodies rather than the production, like on MPP, which I liked for this album! It took me quite a bit of listens until I actually started noticing a lot of the production aspects which makes me want to go back and listen again and again, but at that point the melodies start to grow old. But if you listen to it a billion times in one week, like me, this is an album you can get something new out of every time.

Okay, after listening to this album a couple of times, I think I know where I stand on it. If there was just one moment of minimal noise, or like a chance for the album to "breathe" if that makes any freaking sense, then it'd be a lot better. I end up getting fatigued by tracks 8-10, which I zone out during. But, the closer is great, the first two tracks ROCK, and I didn't dislike the Deakin contribution as much as you did. Light to decent 7. Overall, pretty good. Again, great review, man.

My favourite part of this album is the progression from New Town Burnout to Monkey Riches. The two flow together so well and I mean when you start hearing the intro to Monkey Riches, you need it to follow through. If New Town Burnout comes up on shuffle I have to turn it off and make sure Monkey Riches plays next. I love Avey's vocals in Monkey Riches and I have so much fun listening to it. And I always think about their amazing performance of it at Pitchfork Music Fest 2011. It's definitely not for everyone and I do think the album all together falls a bit flat but those two tracks make it worth keeping around in my listening rotation frequently.
@tyuig64
@tyuig64 12 лет назад
I definitely agree with what you said about the production, it is by far my biggest complaint with the album. On certain songs, there's just so much going on that the track gets muddy, and there's a lot of weird blurring happening with the vocals, in a few songs it almost seems like the microphone was under a pillow. The album is growing on me a ton though as I slowly get past that setback.

If you've listened to some of Animal Collective's interviews about the concept around the album, how it's almost supposed to be coming from the perspective of being in a control room, that's the claustrophobic feeling you're getting, the "out of control" feeling you're feeling, you might've not enjoyed the album. But you've got to realize they've reached their "goal", and honestly, I loved every little leg of the Centipede Hz. Keep up the wonderful work, Anthony. WE LOVE YOU.

I agree with billyshearz completely, Anthony, you should really do a follow up to this eventually. I felt similar to you on my first few listens, but after relistening another couple of times I've come to love the album as a whole (I still don't particularly like Wide Eyed that much) and it's certainly an enjoyable album and a good progression of the AnCo sound.

I respect your opinion Anthony, I really do. But, I enjoyed this album a lot. I think applesauce is one of animal collective's best songs though, I really got attached to that song. And Centipede Hz was one of the first AnCo albums I was able to look forward too (I didn't know of animal collective till about 2010). What you say about the production makes sense (the cluttered feeling, the feeling of too much) but my ears find new sounds on this album every day. Hopefully a companion EP is comin.

While I agree with your point, I don't think this album or anything AnCo has put out requires drugs to enjoy. I actually find CHz more enjoyable than MPP and almost as good as Strawberry Jam

Though I disagree, I can see why you'd like it better. I remember getting an MP3 copy from a friend in Barcelona at the time and ended up buying it pretty soon afterwards, as I though it must have been either unmastered or badly ripped. When it turned out that it was neither, I was somewhat surprised. I do believe that Ben Allen is more than a good producer. I really think he helped Animal Collective and Deerhunter create their greatest works. Please Review the XX Coexist before it hits stores!

Antony, did you take the whole alien radio concept in mind when bringing up the chaotic element? Im also not sure what did you expect from this album. When reviewing honeycomb/gotham you said that MPP was near the border of being overproduced (or too much "cheesy") and that you're glad that they moved a bit from that.

Hi dude, here Italy. I am a huge fan of Animal Collective, simply love them, I've been constantly listened to them for years, they are my fav band ever. In this case I totally agree with you, each word you said. This album is just weak, over-noisy and predictable. Of course there are a bunch of tunes which I consider very good, and Applasauce well I do dig it, maybe one of their most intensive songs. Complimenti per la recensione dude, always nice job.

Good review! According to an interview the album was very much composed with a view to playing live, something I think you hear, and that works really well. I was super pleasantly surprised when I saw them play here in Belin half a year or more ago. I must agree tho, it feels like a lot of the sound effects are on top of the songs instead of part of the songs. I still really love the album tho.

I don't even understand how someone can not like this album. The polyrhythms are so immediate and ecstatic. And on every subsequent listening a new detail reveals itself. Really, I can't see this album as a misstep at all.

Hey Fantanbro, have you heard any good new doom metal? You introduced me to the genre-- well, inspired me to listen to an entire doom metal band album for the first time (Pall Bearer)-- and I loved the hell out of it. Still do. Aaaanywhoo. I don't have an actual band to suggest for review, but I personally would have given the Animal Collective album a stronger 6, perhaps as high as a 7.5 even. I'm a noob to their music, so maybe my mind will change when I hear the older stuff.

As reluctant as I am to agree with anything short of absolute praise for the band, I can understand his qualms with Centipede Hz; this review actually sounds a lot like my first impressions with the album: harsh, too many random noises, etc. It took me a few listens but I like it more every time I listen to it. They all got together to make an album that was meant to be played live and improvised. Something raw to be felt physically rather than a soundscape for your feelings. The concept is a little far-out with the outer-space radio transmission theme - and I'm not sure if that's ever been committed to like this - so I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I do like that they went for something as grounded and raw production-wise as it is out-there and imaginative. Also, I have seen them a few times on their Centipede Hz tour and in my opinion they have just as much fun with and put just as much of their hearts into performing these new songs as they do with the rest of the songs they perform. Also, DEAKIN FOR LIFE.

You were spot on about the Mercury Man intro being reggae-ey, because it was a sample I think from a really old reggae song!

Agreeing with you about the mix but generally I found this album easier to digest than anything they put out before. You have a point that there isn't a huge progression since Merriweather but its still busy and lush so I enjoyed it.

Really interesting review! I haven't listened to the album yet and am contemplating going totally cold not having heard anything when I see them live next week. The Honeycomb single I thought was amazing and though you gave a great review of that. Sorry to hear this album wasn't great. As for albums to review next, I understand you didn't like Dan Deacon's Bromst, but I've REALLY loving his new album America. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.
