There are EIGHT different personality types for the villagers, but in new horizons they all just feel watered down and exactly alike. (Except for jock villagers because they never shut up about working out) you should be able to distinguish what their personality is depending on the types but sometimes i honestly can’t. Even with the types, in new leaf you could have 2 peppy villagers (or any other types) and them both seeming like 2 different individuals with different attributes that you learn about them as you interact and make connections with them more. The dialogue is so repetitive in new horizons that each of the personality types are fitting but ALWAYS talk about the same thing. They could honestly be just the exact some copy and pasted villagers if it wasn’t for looks. I loved being able to developer close relationships in new leaf where you could find the soft spots of cranky and snooty villagers and even go to so much as have them take regular visits to your house (on their own!) it seems that this connection is completely gone in new horizons. I remember one of my favorite actions in new leaf with Whitney (a snooty villager) was how many times i attempted to move her out and get rid of her because of her rude behavior and tendencies to pick on me/be mean, but the more i talked to her she became one of my favorites. She opened up to me, talking about how she settled for a simple town life instead of fame because nothing is better than friendship, and became kinder and gentle. It honestly hurts my heart to not have interactions like this anymore and i honestly hope that there’s on update for this in new horizons in the future.

I miss the villagers asking cute questions like "does my outfit look cute" ect like the villagers are really lacking

My favorite part of this game is that I spent weeks not "upgrading" the shop, because I liked that the tent was open 24/7--only to find out that I HAD to "upgrade" the shop to progress the game. I also love that I already know what I want my island to look like, but I haven't unlocked terraforming yet, so I am forced to constantly put buildings down in places I don't want them. And I REALLY love that I accidentally placed half my villagers' plots one spot to the left of where I wanted them, so now it will take weeks to shift them all over one spot to the right. But who knows? Maybe once I've moved them all to their intended places, I'll find out some key element of my island plan doesn't work, and I'll have to move them all again! It literally gives me anxiety just thinking about it.

Never before have I been so offended by something I 1000% agree with.

It took me years to get tired of New Leaf yet I'm already bored of New Horizons. New Leaf had so many little things in it to discover even with being in real time. New Horizons is supposed to feel empty in the beginning but as time travelers have shown... There isn't much to look forward to. I'm seriously done with all games releasing with so little content and making up for it with "free updates". It doesn't help that anytime you bring up an issue with the game you get hunted down by people saying that you're blinded by nostalgia and there is nothing wrong with the game because it has a cat with glasses in it.

I hate that there's only one representative, I was broke when I bought it, so my brother helped me buy it. He payed the most so he played first, and never plays. I only realised yesterday that the reason I can't progress is because I have to use HIS account to progress! Bull crap, really. Atleast you should be able to change the representative.

Finally someone acknowledges rune factory 4. There is so much content in that game.

I love the animal crossing series with all my heart. I played the original gamecube version and put almost 1000+ hours into it. I played wild world on ds and loved that one as well. Then new leaf with its island, Kapns charm, the museum, emotes. I felt happy, but this one just feels, empty. No deep sea diving, no roost, tools break, added a more complicated mechanic that seemed just adding stuff just to have features. Then the npcs just feel bland, even more so than previous installments. No it isn't nostalgia, i booted up new leaf last week and still felt the same about it. I love the music that changes with the time, the charm that the shops all lined up give. Digby and nook mart. It all felt right and fun. Sure there is gonna be stuff added later but that isn't the point. Why do i want to buy an animal crossing that has so little to offer base game? I might as well wait a year for more content, i might even get it cheaper. Just as it stands I don't feel like playing or even purchasing this version.

This video actually made me realize all the problems I have with the game that I kept pretending not to see cuz I wanted it to be SO MUCH BETTER

The thing about Animal crossing in general is that everyone enjoys it differently, so I did disagree with some of it simply because I play it so differently. I think a larger focus on customization actually makes the game more of an immersive sim than it did before. Rather than just trees and a river, its the pond I built with the swing I placed next to it for reading books. I like having to wait for things as well, because sometimes the only reason I can drag myself out of bed in the morning is because I know a new store or a new villager is waiting for me in the game. I think the video was good. But it felt like a side of salt... For people who play the game a certain way. But that's fine, since these are always objective anyway :3 I just wanted to to type this out since I had it on my mind and I have way too much free time lol

The worst part about them not streamlining the storage system for crafting is that they did it for the wardrobe.

Why tf can the gold tools break, no real point in making them

With the lack of content, honestly, this game will be dead in less than a month. Of course, people will come back for seasonal events but...there's really...not much to really do. I'ma Time traveller, I know, I guess I wouldn't exactly know but, I have friends who were strictly not, and despite having wait times for building things, they were pretty much almost finished with the main "campaign" already and it's just...so disappointing. We waited so long for this... And the villagers...look, I have a best friend, her name is Lily, she's a frog. And she's been in my town for almost every game! And I finally got her...and it's just...I don't like her as much. She says the EXACT same things as my other normal persona type villager and they both repeat the EXACT same dialogue EVERYDAY. It feels like they never have anything interesting to say. The routines are cute and all but that doesn't make up for the lack of depth to them. They feel like dead robot toys that walk around to look good. I want to love this game but after the main campaign, I'm already bored.

I started with Wild world... With Jay being my favorite villager. Even though he was considered to be sporty he had a unique personality in the game that made me more drawn to him... Now imagine my shock when I see him move in to my village and he acts the same way my other Jock villager acts... They feel...... dead......

I’m just sad that most of the content is just gone. No cafe, no club, no HHA building, no salon, no observatory/museum shop, no Gracie shop, no art gallery, no fortune teller, no shoe store, no garden store, no mini games, and all seasonal events come via updates and aren’t just programmed into the game. I was excited about this game at first, but it’s so much less fun than New Leaf once you get past terraforming and outdoor decor.

For the love of God, they need to throw in a patch that lets us craft with the stuff in our house inventory. It'd also be nice if Blathers didn't have 3 boxes of dialogue after assessing my fossils. Animal crossing to me is that game series where depending how you play and who you are some issues may not actually be issues. I understand how things can be considered objectively bad or less optimal but I'm going to try to explain what I mean. I play animal crossing for a very simple reason that started a year before new horizons would come out. I've tried the game before and had a copy of new leaf and just didnt get the appeal until I started playing as a way to calm myself down from panic attacks,get motivation back and generally as a sort of therapy. The real time in the game and the waiting was a crucial part to the game, unlike other games where you get everything immediately this game actually gave me something to look forward to and keep me motivated alongside actually making me feel like I was working towards a long term project. I refuse to time travel no matter what for this reason,because it would be cutting out the part that makes me feel accomplished. The menuing...I will admit objectively isnt streamlined but funnily enough I dont mind it. I enjoy just reading the text and just explaining what I want in parts because it feels like I'm thinking more about it. Honestly this game is special and I thank it for helping me with my panic attacks, fear of death and many other mental issues. I get that there ate flaws but they dont affect me personally so i dont mind then.

Honestly I like Scott, his Side of Salts series is on games he likes, he's not blinded by liking the game to ignore its very blatant flaws like how EVERYONE hates people that do that, there is no middle ground there better be corporate boot licking or spineless bandwagoning hate

I’m so so glad someone agrees with me on so many things. I don’t always have real-life time to sit down and spend hours grinding in this game the way it wants me to. I have things to do.

What makes it worse is that the shop only has one upgrade instead of having many and a ton of the stores are flat out removed, the ONE shop upgrade is extremely small compared to the max upgrades in games like new leaf, which i think is probably to shoehorn DIY as a “faster way to get furniture”

Tbh after a week of playing ACNH without time travel I started to miss new leaf so much that I dug up my old 3DS and began beautifying my new leaf town instead... oh boy.

Fuck. This was my very first Animal Crossing game and I've absolutely adored it. I love just casually grinding away to make a beautiful island and house, I love the characters, the scenery, the museum, everything. But Scott's 100% right. Even though I can get past all the tedium of grinding and the bad UI, there's not a ton to this game. And if previous entries had more to offer than this one, then that's just depressing. I feel like all the fun has been sucked out of the game for me now. Is it even worth it to play anymore? Do I go back and play New Leaf? Do I wait for the virus to come and suck the essence from my lungs as I die a slow, agonizing death?

Is Tom Nook being evil the deadest meme in the franchise? Yes.

This is gonna be a long comment. I love New Horizons just as much as New Leaf, but that's the thing: it's not higher than New Leaf. I do love the crafting, achievement system, and creativity that New Horizons has, and I don't mind the free updates since it'll give me a reason to keep playing the game. The visuals are amazing, music is catchy, and the game never felt more relaxing. However, this video made me realize what the charm of past games in the series have. One thing I loved about New Leaf is inviting villagers to my house and doing requests for them. Yes, you can do requests in New Horizons, but it is so rare that you could go a whole week without them asking you for anything. The villager's personalities all seem more dumbed down and they keep repeating the same lines about how excited they are for Bunny Day. It's like if you yourself do not make a connection with a certain villager (not by in game dialogue though because that is barely present), they're more like tools for your town rather than actual villagers. The Able Sisters, Tom Nook, KK Slider, and Resetti all have backstories that further develop them as characters. I do love Isabelle (I even main her in Smash) but the one thing she lacks is this backstory and character development. If this game updates the Roost in, I think Isabelle should be in there at night and if you talk to her, she gives some backstory, like why she is always positive and never sleep, and I think it could make for a very fleshed out character. The Roost has already been found in the game files, so the possibility is there. But to be fair, the game lacking content thing was done waaaay worse by Sword and Shield. At least New Horizons will bring back content for free rather than putting it behind an overpriced paywall. Plus, I feel the vanilla New Horizons has enough content on it's own to not feel empty after 3 weeks. The New Horizons team proved that they listen to feedback by toning down the egg drop rates. If we get the word out, we can make a difference and make this game the best it can be. (Editors note: big L on me 🗿) EDIT 2 YEARS LATER: so uh they did add The Roost back...over a year after release. They really dropped the ball with these updates, being too little and too late. Most people aren't gonna care if you release an update 4 months after people stopped playing it. This is probably Nintendo's worst victim of their recent content update strategy. Release a complete game before you update it.
