Animal 'Mystery Box' Fad Causes Outrage in China

Why would anyone want a “mystery animal?!” How can they prepare for the animal’s needs if they don’t know what they are getting?

This is sickening. I can't imagine how much suffering those poor babies have gone through, and how many died in that horrible place.

I assumed you meant they were bling boxes with stuff for animals. Like a box full of treats and toys for dogs for example. This is awful no one should ever do anything like this.

Dude I was nervous as hell getting a ball python, even after knowing for the most part exactly what I was getting into and what his needs would be. I spent months and months debating with myself what pet would meet my needs and what pet's needs I could feasibly meet. I can't even imagine buying a "mystery pet".

Glad to see there aren't too many semi-racist comments blaming this on "China" as a whole. (Especially with the world being as it is right now) That being said, this is truly awful and it's sad to see people treating animals this way.

Whoever is responsible for this and anyone buying these “mystery boxes” need to be put in their own mystery box and shipped from one corner of the country to another. If they want to risk a life they should risk their own, not some innocent animals life for their own entertainment. Especially an animal they aren’t prepared to care for or love properly since the mystery box is clearly just for fun and not appropriate responsibility. Humans are the real monsters of the world

I feel like I have to say "this shouldn't even be an issue" way too often these days... I cannot believe this.

This just seems like a terrible idea to me. After all, I feel like a crucial part of getting a new animal is having the supplies and a home ready for the animals arrival. With a mystery box you don't know exactly what you are getting and therefore cannot prepare completely for the animal.

That's exactly what it is. A desecration of life..so sad.

Even from a consumer point of view HOW can you think this is a good idea!? "I've got a puppy from a mystery box... I don't have puppy food, I don't have puppy toys, I don't have space for a puppy..." this is completely irresponsible on all parts and is an absolute disgrace. Those poor animals deserve better than this.

Those puppies look way too young to be away from their mother, they are like 4-5 weeks old? That’s just asking for problems in behaviour and health. Also who in the world wants a mystery animal box? Especially when you get an animal who needs special care like reptiles and you have no idea how to take care of them, more animals died than just in transport I’m afraid, that’s so sad.

i feel even hesitant whenever buying small reptiles (snakes, gekos etc) online bc of postal services here, even though i know that there is such a high success rate, but dogs? cats? birds? i cant even fathom having a dog in a car (for road trips) for more than 4 hours straight, let alone in a kennel that is unstable and stinks of other animals, left overnight. i don't understand how someone even comes up with this type of stuff. do people realize that they need to be prepared for this pet? or were they just going to buy things once they've received it? this is outrageous

I got scared having a tarantula sent to me in the post, I had full tracking information and knew what time it was arriving, still terrifying, something needs to be done about the purchasers as well, if they've already tried once, they'll try again

As upsetting as this news is, it is heartening to see so many people rallying together to decry this practice. Hopefully, the public outrage is enough and the practice is stifled.

Mystery pet? Seriously, you can't know what their needs are or if you can dedicate time and space to them if you can't even tell the species of the animal you're getting. Those people ordering them to see animals as toys, not living beings.

I couldn't even imagine. I was confused because I thought the title referred to etsy mystery crates for pets where you get items geared toward thats type of pet.

I wonder if after rehabilitation if they would sell those animals! I feel so bad for them & would be willing to adopt a new animal from the people rescuing them. Do the people rescuing them have a site? Donating & helping these animals find better homes after they have gone through rehab will help them now. It sucks this was a thing to begin with. * I own a homestead etc, and take in animals in need. It'd be also helpful to be able to donate to them! I can't imagine what it would be like to have a sudden amount of animals in your care that need vet work etc.

Omg couldn't do that why would anyone do that? Whoever bought those animals should go to jail too. Just go find a adoption,shelter or pet store. This is horrible.

I'm happy to hear that the people are furious about something like this even making the ''market''. But holy hell, how does something like this even get past a few guys who don't even question the odd sounds coming from TENS of those crates. An apology doesn't cut it when there are living animals being shipped like socks. They should step up and fund the rescuers and medical teams for their effort in cleaning up their mess. And those who found any interest or amusement in this kind of service should heavily feel ashamed.

"Mystery blind box?!?" This is a terrible idea. Research is SO important for the success of keeping an animal in your home! On the bright side it's nice to know there is an interest in keeping animals humanly in China. Usually I hear not-so-good things about keeping animals in Asia but knowing that there is an interest in humane animal keeping there makes me happy.

I hope those animals found good homes in the end, I can't believe people still treat animals like objects. Ugh.

I've seen videos where people (who sound American) get mystery fish from a vending machine. It's absolutely horrid thinking of all these animals who will likely not receive proper or even decent care because ppl are not prepared for what they get.

I guess the babies were produced in terrible breeder's place (?) Which made the babies hygiene and health severely affected and then the seller packed the animals in the blind box (?) Let's say, animals from breeder's farm is already sick (since i volunteer at animals welfare org and I've seen so many terrible conditions) And these blind box even packed them inside a "blind" box in which essentials such as oxygen and light is in deficit. I just can't imagine how these poor babies suffered

Hi! I was wondering if you would consider doing a video on Travis the chimp and him attacking Charla Nash? If you aren’t familiar with that case basically a woman raised a chimpanzee from when he was a baby, took him everywhere with her and treated him as her actual child. Then she had a friend come help her with him and he mauled her seemingly out of no where one day when he was about 15 years old. The woman who was mauled, charla Nash, ended up surviving but is permanently disfigured. I know it’s a little different from most of your videos but I was thinking you could do an analysis on what was done wrong during his upbringing that brought him to the point of violently mauling a woman, because I haven’t seen anyone really talk about that and I believe the lady that raised Travis did a LOT of things wrong.

I cannot for the life of me understand the mindset behind the buyers, like, mistery animal? Seriously who wants a mistery animal? You wont have the tools ready to care for it when it arrives, you probably dont see having a turtle and a dog as the same like... just sit the fuck down and think this through for like five minutes. Great now you know not to get a mistery box, now sit and think a lot longer because animals are big and important choices that shouldnt be treated likely. God, I feel icky after seeing that, glad people are outraged and understand how terrible it is, anoyed it happened in the first place.
