Ler is like a really good pawn. you really needed a good tamer. The melee will help on animal attacks on your tamer.

So the trick to making animal pens work are so: 1. The fences aren't needed and can be detrimental to late game. You can just replace em' with walls. 2. You don't grow hay IN the animal pen. You grow hay OUTSIDE it, and haul them into the barn proper, preferably putting hay on shelves. 3. Dandelion's the way to grow in animal pens, but you'll need a constant grower to handle it. Definitely a late game thing.
