Animals as Leaders are an American instrumental progressive metal band from Washington, D.C. It currently consists of guitarists Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka, having been formed by Abasi in 2007. They are a prominent band within the djent scene. Prosthetic Records released the band's eponymous debut album in 2009. They went on to release the albums Weightless (2011), The Joy of Motion (2014), and The Madness of Many (2016).

I discovered this band several years ago. One night I was taking a ride home and my Uber driver plays this song. I liked it and I had the SoundHound app tell me the name of the song and band. Got to see Animals as Leaders at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco in 2019. Aside from one of the band’s merch boys sucking at his job and charging me double the price of one t-shirt by being negligent, this was an awesome concert. These guys are the real deal.

@@jccanizal6410 H is actually a note. The note B was previously named H. So the C major Scale would go C D EF G A HC. I am not sure if that’s what the writer of this comment meant though. It might have been just a symbol for a low tuning.

+Norbert Somogyi To each his own, but I'd have to disagree. After some pop music, this sounds other worldly and God-like. See Stevie T's video on How To Write a Pop Song. But I understand what you mean. I've tried showing this to people that don't normally listen to music like this, and with the sweeping in the beginning, they think it's just another average metal song. And I'm like nah, nah, nah... Just wait. And then it kicks in with the melodies.

Ty Carpenter for me it's godlike, but you got it. Even the melodies aren't that kind of melodies what other people used to. For example I can't imagine a day without music, and I know a lot of people who don't listen to music at all (I'd die in 2 days)

Yo I'm one to live and die for hip-hop. REAL hip-hop from the 90s, underground, jazzy, boom bap, golden era old school. Sadly our society has dwindled down to listening to pure corporate sell out mainstream garbage such as (insert wack mothafuckas wayne drake minaj etc.) and quite frankly it sickens me to the soul. They are to be pitied or ignored. Preferably both. Anyway, I have to give you props for being as open minded as you are, it's rare to see that coming from someone primarily involved in a genre like hiphop. It usually is most of the mainstream BS that ruins genres for other people who don't know how to find the good stuff in any form of music. +Cx Mu There are a lot of bands you could fairly accuse of being soulless technicality, but Animals as Leaders is not one of them, definitely not CAFO. There is a solid beat to each section of this song (even if some parts are in 9/4 or 7/4 and are harder to follow), and each riff is memorable in its own right. I particularly love the slow dissonant chordal riff following the long tapped section and the way they bring back the rhythm part from the intro alongside it.

People, "Soul" is the most common argument used by people who doesn't know anything about music (Next to feeling). Its equal to say that you don't like something because you just don't. Any emotional reaction to music is totally subjective and inherent to a particular person, I can say that this song causes me euphoria, tension and a whole spectrum of feelings, and who can say anything? And most likely a lot of people will react somehow to this song. If you want to criticize music, at least come with something constructive and measurable.
