pretty sure he didn't mean 40 mph but 40 feet/turn. Because 40 mph means the wizard was flying (roughly) 58 feet per second. 1 turn is 6 seconds, so he was moving close to 360 feet per turn? I call bs on a wizard moving that fast. :p I have a mobility monk that has 60 ft/turn movement. Double that for haste is 120. Double that because dashing is 240. Add another dash and only then do you reach 360 feet in 6 seconds.
Elliott Davidson snap you're absolutely right. I got the fly spell mixed with some flying boots in my current campaign. Those only give you flying up to your normal move speed.... Anyway. I stand corrected ^^

@@MrJinglejanglejingle You might be able to get rid of 2-3 guards with cook and book on a single target. Just be sure to tell them that they might want to help their friend of of his heavy armor before he is fried.

Our DM made mistakes and gave my wizard the equivalent of 2 simulacrums with "quarter damage and hp" as a fifth level spell. He did not say I couldn't cast it multiple times or that my clones could clone themselves. Apparently he got annoyed when my clone legion all cast haste on the barbarian for 15 extra actions and supersonic speed, and the blood hunter performed 24 rituals on the barbarian's weapon to add 24d8 per hit. 47 AC supersonic 17 APR 612 damage brutal critical advantage on melee attacks seems perfectly balanced.

@@zehk7963 You also abused him by giving him the wrong ruling of spells, you can only benefit from one casting of haste at a time, if one loses concentration, you keep the effect and get stunned. The actions don't stack, not does the speed.
I love how in this one, you did not tell a story in which Haste saved the day. You just told a funny story, in which you happened to cast Haste. It's still brilliant!

Exactly. Brilliant decisions like these make me facepalm so hard as a DM. I had a session where party members were chasing a super old Night Hag while she was ethereal with logic "maybe she will take us to her lair and we will loot it". I made clear the hag KNEW about the players, but noooo, they continued. What happened? She lured them into a cave with 3 giants, she spooked the giants and then became ethereal again. 2/6 players died and now have new characters. And it was only 2 due to immense luck with dice. I tried not to kill them, but you can't beat stupid.
Yep I feel that. Every death seems to be the DM'S fault when in reality players come up with the most horrendous brain defying way to kill themselfs expecting a miracle.
This has been my favorite video of yours so far. So many people think the main bread and butter of DnD is role play, or fantasy world building, or dice rolls... but if I had to pick one main core of DnD: it’s a bunch of people scrambling to make a convoluted plan, poor communication, watching it implode, and reacting to that implosion on the fly
and if it doesn't end with a tpk they walk away to another place, do the same thing but this time this implosion is a combination of their new stupid actions + consequences from their old ones. Then the cycle continues
if you have a problem rogue who likes to loot the bodies and sleight of hand pocket the choice items as soon as combat ends. . .cast haste on them during combat. it makes you look helpful, makes them feel super strong...and when it's over, they get immobilized for 1 round while everyone else has time to take inventory
An actual idea for plot armor. An enchanted suit whose AC is based on the stories the wearer tells the armor.Better and more thrilling stories and the AC is high. Bland and it stays low. You can only tell one story a week. Literal plot armor.
I was thinking something like AC dependent on how much the situation is against you. In a fight you should win, it makes you more vulnerable, worse than wearing no armor at all. In a single man vs army scenario your all but untouchable. That better fits most plot armor hero's. Lose a fight to a mugger on the street, cause plot needed to happen. But can take on the entire ninja army by yourself.
Enchanted armor based on the stories a player could tell would be broken with a bard. Just think about it, if a bard has a +15 or higher to performance, and there is a set of this kind of armor for the whole party it wouldn't be out of the question for the party to get to effective lvl 60(tri multiclassing to 20 each) before they start seeing trouble again.
Ah haste, that brings back pleasant memories. My DM was running a short lvl 20 mini-campaign where we went through Tomb of Horrors and then fought a random mega-evil creature. My group rolled Jubliex, demon lord of slime. I was playing as a barbarian. Tomb of Horrors didn't really matter, so I'll skip straight to the Jubliex fight. We had just arrived in his lair and were gearing up for the tough fight ahead. I chugged a Storm Giant potion to boost my strength up to 29 (+9). Just after I did that our wizard pulled out a bag full of haste potions, which the party all started downing. Now at this point the DM warned me that drinking two potions could have some very bad side effects. I had no idea what could happen, so I drank a haste potion for fun. The DM rolled on the potion mishap table and came up with "The numerical effects of one of the potions is doubled" We rolled for it. We rolled good. We rolled Storm Giant... Instead of setting my strength to 29 (+9), the potion set my strength to 58 (+24). Suddenly I could only miss on a natural one, I could only roll 58 on strength checks (as I had +30 to athletics and a high level barbarian can't roll below his strength score on those checks) and, because of haste, I was making 3 attacks a turn. With my astounding +31 damage (+24 for STR, +6 Proficiency and +1 for my sword) I was now dealing 3d8 + 93 damage per turn. Jubliex got a tad scared at that point. He tried running up the walls, but I could jump 27 feet into the air with a running start. Combine that with my immovable rod and rope of climbing, and I could follow him anywhere and do anything.
+25 to damage, it's +31 to hit. You don't add proficiency to damage. It does go up to +29 damage while raging. That sounds like a lot of fun and really ridiculous any way. I love a good Hulk jump. It's my favorite way to roll nat 1's.

Then those were extremely weak cultists and guards. Guards in any decently sized city aren't supposed to be the PC equivalent of level 1. They're basically experienced fighters all working together for a common goal. Pissing off an entire city of guards is supposed to be a really bad idea.
So story about haste bullshit. My party and I had to save a friend of the party’s from the largest, most powerful orc army in the north. I (a Half-Orc Barbarian) disguised myself as an orc and snuck into the camp (Edit: I forgot to mention our Cleric/Druid was wildshaped as a chipmunk in my pocket) while our Bard and Sorcerer turned invisible and flew in. Meanwhile our Fighter, Druid, and Wizard were hiding in a ritual cast Tiny Hut outside. Needless to say things went downhill, they had someone with life sense, and they sent the entire army after our friends in the Tiny Hut. Just when we thought they were screwed beyond belief our Druid cast Polymorph on our Fighter turning him into a CR 7 Giant Ape with Multiattack and our Wizard cast Haste on him turning him into a nightmarish Huge sized beast that could move almost 200 ft. in a single turn or do a total of 12d10 damage if all attacks hit. Can you imagine the horror of surrounding a Tiny Hut only for a Haste’d Giant Ape to emerge? Nightmare fuel. Then our Wizard shouted “Send in the second giant ape” and the army retreated. So yeah, Haste when used correctly is terrifying.
Imagine an item enchanted with haste, Gauntlet of Additional Attack, Gloves of Try Making That Potion Again I Dare You!, and my favorite, Necklace of Why The Hell Am I Using This Action to Talk?!
An old party of mine had a similar strategy but we went about it differently. We had Three spell casters and Three melee characters, So at times we would Cast poly on the melee characters to turn them into Trexes. We had to do this to fight a dragon boss { that we were kinda supposed to run from } Except we Went two Trexes and Wizard casted Fly on us so we had two flying Rexes fighting an Ice dragon. Sadly this wasnt enough because the first guy got Fearful presenced and couldnt help anymore and my Guy fought pretty hardy till i lost Rex form. So i fought as a flying Goliath Barbarian Fighter - Samurai and Slew the dragon 3 hp from death, fulfilling my characters dream of killing a dragon and killing the biggest baddest monsters to help promote his mercenary group he owned. Multi Poly is always a fun time, especially poly with another type of Effect like fly or Haste.
@@scottrauch1261 My party has this thing where they reluctantly say "Don't judge me" after taking a *very* questionable decision. Stuff like summoning a stone golem on a small ship, sinking it. Or casting an aoe spell on a crowded location, murdering many innocent npcs. Or drinking that powerful antidote that was supposed to be for the prince, to complete the quest, but you drank it before asking the party just because you got poisoned by a random enemy, poison that could be cured by waiting it out. Or trying to punch baby bears to death to gain experience and lvl up before a big fight.
I wish wizards of the coast were more generous with Sorcerer's known spells so that I don't have to feel pressured in giving up fun spells for "mandatory usefull ones" like haste :P
@@7Wolfbrother7 that would mean WotC would also have to give up making some spells intentionally overpowered because of "iconic status". Too bad WotC are idiots for the most part and the only reason i play their game is because the community products behind it save it. Similar to how i woild have never finished skyrim, if it weren't for the modders who made an actually decent game out of it. The only good thing about D&D is everything that is exclusively *not made by WotC* because they hold on to the wrong values.

Maybe he only had the one spell slot available... lower level Sorc build... just happened to have Haste because... he thought that would be needed more.
Saving the Cleric is always a good choice. Because when you need it most, it becomes very convenient for a cleric to "forget" they could heal. Not speaking from personal experience, of course.
More pragmatically the cleric can potentially raise dead the fighter, the fighter cant do the same. This asumes the cleric is at least level 9. Technically the sorcerer could pull this stunt at lvl 5 once they have 3rd lvl spell slots but as I recall the first resurrection spell that does not need to be cast within 1 minute of death is a lvl 5 spell. Even if the guards go non lethal the cleric is probably more useful for a jailbreak than the fighter.
I love how this turned from 'let me explain you a spell' to 'let me tell you an entertaining story and casually explain how the spell it' s about works in the first few seconds'.
Put Haste on a monk In any combat encounter. Sit back and watch dragon ball z occur. Afterwards proceed to give them what is the equivalent of a senzu bean. Which is a health potion
Sadly, they only get a single extra punch from haste, so it’s usually really wasteful to put it on a class who already gets 4 attacks at level 5. Making that 5 for a level 3 spell slot is a bit bleh
@@michaelsavage8774you forget the +2AC and advantage on dex save. The latter is really good for monk since they have evasion, and the AC is always nice. Haste indeed transform a monk into adragon ball z character, not because of the attack number, but because nothing will hit them

I am pretty sure I watched this when it first dropped but only now do I notice the look on the ranger's face after getting hasted makes it looks like she just got a whopping dose of methamphetamines.
I play a shadow sorcerer, Jun, in my current campaign, who's taken up a mostly supportive role. A lot of her spells are thematic, usually something to do with water, darkness, or various manipulations of time. (something something time flows like a river, etc etc, it fits well enough with the water theme) We were sneaking through a high-security tower in one mission, one equipped with magical alarm systems and tons of reinforcements. And these guards were no pushovers either. We entered one of the higher floors, our disguises were blown, and we listened as the alarms began to sound, the guards taking up their positions. I weighed my options. On one hand, if we kept things slow and steady we'd be able to handle the guards here and push onwards to the room to turn off the alarm. It'd stop the reinforcements and buy us a little more time to finish our objective. Still, if we were too slow, we'd get beaten by the reinforcements. I took a good hard look at my party. Two fighters (one of whom was a gunslinger) and a ranger/fighter multiclass. The battle master fighter was easily our best damage-dealer and had a few fancy movement options via some magic items. She also had some remaining healing potions on her. I realized she'd be our best bet to turn off the alarm. Still, that left us with one less combatant, and most of my spells weren't amazing for combat, especially without the ability to concentrate. The ranger already had tons of attacks, she was a duel-wielder with shortswords. She'd have enough attacks between her to make up the difference if hasted, so I twinned it on both of them and shouted the plan. The first fighter, Hilda, wasn't engaged with anything if I remember right, so she was able to double dash and book it down the various hallways in search of the security room. The ranger/fighter, Anthea, lept into combat with Jun taking cover to avoid dropping concentration from a stray hit. The last fighter, Leoric, took up arms and began providing backup fire with his pistol. Hilda wound up in the room with an action to spare on her next turn, having gone into the security room and yanked the lever. The only issue was that she was now surrounded by 4 guards. Thankfully, there were still 8 turns of Haste to help her with that. Meanwhile, our trio was hit with the first (and only) set of reinforcements, guards beginning to surround us. We fought tooth and nail, players watching frantically as Hilda's HP dwindled slowly but surely in her 4v1, while the rest of our characters steadily dealt with the remaining 5 or 6 guards we had yet to mow down. At the end of the combat, our three weary combatants rushed down the hall, throwing open the door to find Hilda, standing wearily surrounded by the bodies of 4 dead guards, with barely a sliver of HP left. Haste is a really good spell.
That actually gave me an idea. What if spells cold become addicting to non magical characters if used to much? The Barbarian or Fighter start to get the "shacks" if they aren't hasted or Blured often enough.
Not to mention, if he cast haste on the fighter and cleric and sacrificed himself, they'd get stunned as soon as he failed his first concentration check, and chances are they wouldn't have gotten THAT far away by that point.
@@coppermeowmix Depends on the layout, a tanky cleric and a geared fighter can hold a 10 foot wide street for quite a long time, especially if they are focused more on staying alive than maxing dps. None of the guards displayed appeared to have range weapons on them, which means the sorc in the back is probably safe from endless concentration checks.
I don't blame you for leaving the tankiest party member to fight 20 guards alone. Besides, -it's easy to replace fighters.- it's important not to let clerics die in case their god is watching?
I had my mouth on the floor thinking it would be a epic sacrifice moment. Nope. I can almost imagine the Fighter's face when he looks back just to be alone.
Saberus Terras Invisibility and Expeditious Retreat are both concentration spells, so only 1 can be active by the same caster at a time as he can't concentrate on both.
Darn. Forgot about that. Well, maybe just hoof it for a couple of turns, hopefully the other two run in the other direction. Once the guards have their backs to them, invis becomes redundant.
Fly speed is 60, HASTE, to 120, dash to 240, double dash is 360 NOT 480, 360 feet per turn, is 3600 feet in a minute. * 60 minutes is 216,000 feet per hour, 40.9 god forsaken miles per hour! race car build is online!
It's embarrassing how long it took for me to realize that Dashing doesn't double your speed, just let you move your full speed again. Used to think a 30ft speed double Dashing was getting 120ft, and it came up rarely enough that it never bothered me. I now realize how ridiculous that actually is and have since reread the rule.
Mobile, Longstrider, Zephyr Strike, Tabaxi's Feline Agility, Rogue's Cunning Action bonus action dash, external Haste, and any magic item you want that can give flying equal to your walking speed. You can break 100mph by combining additive and multiplicative speed bonuses.

It's funny and memorable, which is ultimately the whole point of playing D&D. Although I think the stupidity of the plan in question undermines this particular moment. Still, the way that the other party members deal with it makes it memorable. Or perhaps it's a sexual fantasy. Who knows.
Man, I've been loving all of the animated spell book, but the humor in this one really got to me. Maybe its because I can see my friends pulling all the same stunts. Top notch work!
No matter how, or why, or when, if my character *can* have access to the Haste spell, it *will.* Also, I think I'm starting to sense a pattern here: The videos are gradually increasing in character/class level, context complexity, and all while keeping up with grandiosity of animation. In a few months, we're going to finally have the episode exploring the Wish spell, and it will be 4 minutes of Disney-level story and explanation.

@@archergaming5414 the fighter and warlock are clearly the same as the mete magic, probably the same for the cleric. Tha ranger is new, but the sorcerer is clearly the same race.

@@Stretched_Hobbit I've seen a post on the dnd discord that came up with a 1500ft movement speed wood elf, an Unearthed Arcana including variant (using raging elk totem) with a 1700ft movement speed and a super rule bendy one (if the DM allowed the bonuses to affect Fly) that has a 2000 ft movement speed
@@Stretched_Hobbit I get the feeling the novelty of it would wear off pretty quick lol, but the idea of playing a character that should essentially kill on contact is pretty funny, if ever one of the DMs I play with suggests a high level 1 shot I might give it a go or add it in as an NPC in a one shot of my own

@@failtronic2646 Yeah, I really like 1 artificer I saw in a stream who was a french pastry chef and she baked up the spells, like a custard pie for greese, a red pepper to give herself dragon breath etc. If I get back into the game I want to make 1 who is using drugs, though they are more suitable for another system like Fate.
