Imagine you woke up with your capacity to feel objects completely gone. You wouldn’t be able get out of bed as your brain wouldn’t understand where your limbs were, even if you could see them. Such is the power of touch sensing in our lives. Why then have we created machines around us that are without such senses? Dr Dahiya’s talk will focus on the importance of touch sensing, how it has changed our everyday lifestyle and what disruptive sensor and electronic technologies could emerge in the future. Integrating some of the cutting edge research from the Bendable Electronics and Sensing Technologies (BEST) group at Glasgow University he will explore the concept of the inanimate world being able to feel just like us.
Dr. Ravinder Dahiya is Reader and EPSRC Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow’s School of Engineering. He is the leader of Bendable Electronics and Sensing Technologies (BEST) group. His multidisciplinary research interests include Flexible and Printable Electronics, Electronic Skin, and System Integration. He has published more than 120 articles, 4 patents, 4 books and many book chapters. He has worked on a variety of EU projects (ROBOSKIN, RobotCub, and FLEXSENSOTRONICS) and is currently leading the EU funded Marie Curie ITN - CONTEST (www.contest-itn.eu), and EPSRC Fellowship for Growth: Printable Tactile Skin.
