Making an animated cartoon requires a huge amount of paper--1,440 pieces of paper per minute of animation--as well as an animation disk and basic art supplies. Man I love this guy's videos! I remember first seeing this video when I was 11 years old in 2009 and it really inspired me to animate cartoons! I would always stack a bunch of tracing paper and draw and animate my own characters! Now I am 19 years old and I have applied to California Institute of the Arts to study Character Animation for Fall 2017! I want to create cartoons for television in the style of SpongeBob/Tom and Jerry. Wish me the best of luck!!! :)

...So 3 drawings later and you made like 1/10th of a second worth of movie!!!! This is why computers took over the animation industry, consistency of the drawings and huge and elaborate scenes make it so hard to make by hand. I used to make cartoons by my own when I was young, it took me days and I always felt they were to anything special worth watching, cause I wondered how can they make amazing cartoons... well it took thousands of people I guess, a lot of money and a shitload of time!

This is the problem of every animator in the world, it's very time consuming. Not only that but most get paid(especially in anime) by the frame. So the faster you can get your hand to move the more money you can make. Pretty harsh for any artist or animator.

I worked as an inbetweener at Speilbergs' Amblin unit, but I didn't like it--it was just endless cleanup of already-existing drawings, there was no freedom to create your own cartoons. I enjoy doing the rough extremes though. Great tutorial!

I still animate on paper. I tried graduating entirely to the paperless method of traditional animation, but that turned out to be too overwhelming for my liking. So, I ultimately stuck to traditional pencil on paper with digital coloring and final composition. My Cameron Cat cartoons look a lot better that way in my opinion. By the way, I mostly use limited animation and some full animation. Most importantly, I do everything in the making of my cartoons: All the animation drawings and scenic backgrounds, all the hilarious stories, and all the character voices.

I also use the same aforementioned techniques when I do the initial rough sketches for my fan art; however, when I work on my fan art, I do the finished line art digitally by means of tracing onto another layer using a painting program of my choice, whether it be Paint.net or GIMP.

I think I was messing with adobe flash and there's a option to morph from 1 frame to another within a set amount of frames. So say you wanted a ball to bounce 5x you may only need 5 drawings since you can morph from the initial drop to the impact of the floor within 100 frames then back up within a 100 frames. it just saves time or have 2 images of a characters arm moving within 50-100 frames. Hope this helps and makes since

Do you have to use cels if you want to have a static background? All the cel paper I have found online is pricey.. And I am assuming you cant draw with a pencil on a cel.. Any other options? (besides animating EVERYTHING on the computer?)

With Young Justice, most of the animation is 12 drawings per second (as opposed to the 24 you see in Disney movies). So that's 720 drawings per minute, and 15,840 drawings per 22 minute episode. But not all drawings are created equal. In a Disney movie, those 15,840 drawings would take forever to make and would only amount to 11 minutes, because the drawings are more complicated, the characters move around way more, and the drawings are shown on screen for only 1 frame of film instead of 2. It looks great, but it's not feasible for a TV production. Instead, shows like Young Justice use various tricks to make the work more manageable. For one thing, they’ll have it so that in most scenes, only one part of a character’s body is moving (usually the mouth or the head). That way they don’t have to redraw the entire character every single time, just the part that needs to move. And while the line art created by the animators is drawn with actual pencils, it's later scanned into a computer and colored-in digitally. Before the late 1990s, TV cartoons were colored by tracing over the drawings on a clear sheet of paper and painting the character's colors on the back of the clear sheet. Then those clear sheets were photographed by a movie camera. Digital animation programs make it easier to color things in and edit the footage together; they don't however make the actual animating easier as other commenters have said. Another thing is that Young Justice and almost all other TV cartoons outsource the actual animating to Korean studios. I don’t know all the details, but it’s cheaper and faster than hiring an American crew. I think the pay is less, so they can have larger numbers of animators working on it and therefore create more footage in less time. It’s the only way American entertainment companies are able to release large batches of hand-drawn cartoons in a manageable amount of time while keeping costs low. Whether or not it’s a shady business practice is another question. TLDR: yes it is really that many drawings (often more). They just use shortcuts to produce the episodes in a matter of months instead of years.

@elentasa yeah thats called limited animation, when only 12 drawings are made per second. It was also used for rocky and bullwinkle, but problem is though, it made the animation look choppy, it actually made the show look like it was not animated but, an illustrated radio program. Im pretty sure it only works with anime beacause anime is supposed to look intense (big shining eyes, fast talking, ect., lol)

Exactly! However, he did show using the 'in between' thing, which was helpful for me. But I have spent the last hour Googling for how to draw animation and hoping to stumble on short-cuts like tracing paper, or how to super impose your drawing on top of a static backgound without having to cut out each foreground shot and placing it on the background... that would be hideously tedious so I know there must be some trick, but haven't been able to find it.Just these 'general' how-to videos.

Is there any way to scan a character or scene you've drawn out on paper onto a computer and then just animate that? If I have to draw on a computer it will look like crap and I don't have a lot of paper. If there's a program that allows you to scan a drawn image and then go in to animate it, I would really love to know what I would need for it. Like if it works on tablets or any type of computer. Help is greatly appreciated!

@northpolethrowdown
@northpolethrowdown 9 лет назад
In anime (especially tv episodes) they tend to use multiple frames of the same drawing. Usually 2 and 3 frames, up to many more for longer, more basic action. They use tricks like recycling frames for movement in hair, clothes, etc. They also have hundreds of staff working at the same time. You only need a handful of key frame animators, but the more inbetweeners you have, the quicker the turnaround. This all adds to the stylized look we know as anime, but was mainly implemented to save time and more importantly, money.

@arty-AN5690
@arty-AN5690 6 лет назад
They take 1 week cause there isn't really much animation in anime. Often times the characters are frozen while the mouth has 3 different frames for talking, eyes glistening and hair waving (loop animations) as well as camera movement. When a character is in shock for example - it isn't unusual for to see a still image while a gasp is heard. There can also be many flashbacks that act as slideshows. So really the hard work comes mostly from the detail and art work of the shows, not necessarily the *animation*. Nonetheless, the more detail and depth put into the design of the character, the more work it is to animate them. Everything I just mentioned can vary on the style and how many are working at the same time.

@DDRGURU56, people who made South Parks saved a lot of papers. They use stop motion on their cut out characters.

I think you got it wrong...he would have scanned the drawings anyway to make the final animation.The reason he is flipping the drawings is to see if the movement is good(this is how you can get a sense of the animation before scanning the drawings and putting them together)

It might be somewhat important and fairly obvious, but another reason you record first is for the comical timing of lines and such. Or just timing in general.
