One tip I saw at CTN in the fall is when you are showing your work to someone in person, don’t talk or ask a million questions right after your reel ends. Let the person talk and say their thoughts and opinions before you start explaining shots or talking about your work. Often times, the other person doesn’t have all day or is in line somewhere and doesn’t have time to have a drawn-out conversation about all your shots. Let them say their first impressions and opinions while they are fresh on their mind, and then you can ask questions to elaborate or discuss the work. It also shows you care about their feedback and aren’t immediately running to the defense of your work.

Great video, JD! I went to LightBox Expo this weekend and saw a talk about reels that some Dreamworks recruiters put on. Here are some things they said, in case anyone is interested: They like Vimeo Avoid RU-vid . Avoid autoplay . They want to see that you can do a variety of styles. But they still want to see your "voice". Some of them never turn the volume up because your music sucks. Some of them never turn the music up because the animation needs to "work" without sound. They Might turn the volume up for dances or dialogue. Have an on-Screen breakdown so they don't have to look up and down to see what you did. Just write it at the bottom of the video.

Hannah Addington Great tips! Yeah I hear horror stories about the volume off thing but I guess it still happens. I so disagree with that. Interesting to hear about Autoplay and to avoid YT full stop.

@@jeandenishaas Yeah the volume thing bummed me out because I love to spend a little time on some sound effects (even if I should be spending time on my animation) But I love it. Oh well, all recruiters are different.

Hannah Addington Yeah I’m sure everyone has their own preference. I just find it ... irritating... They know sound is there, it’s part of the shot, they’re job is to evaluate the whole thing. But I guess when you go through thousands of reels the bad music part will force you to just turn the sound off.

@@jeandenishaas I also was told to avoid RU-vid in the past. I suppose it's kind of a deviantART versus ArtStation situation: even though both can do the job of hosting your work, one has a much more professionnal look and goal. Posting on youtube can make you look like you're not taking this seriously, even though your actual work is worth their time.
@jeandenishaas

TheDeathToday That sounds incredibly silly. If a recruiter seems you less valuable because of an upload platform then holy moly.

Can you make a video on what is a cover letter and what is the purpose of this if we have a resume.
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 лет назад
Hamza Asad I don’t think a full clip is needed for that, you can see plenty of examples here: www.google.com/search?q=animation+cover+letter&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari But I’ll keep it in mind.

@jeandenishaas

Vinod Patel Hard to say. It depends if they will go through a work visa, their budget, the schedule of the show, etc. but it happens!

Hey JD! Awesome video series; I would love to see parts 5 and 6. I know some of your videos briefly discuss the content that will be in 5-6, but I would love to see more in-depth conversations on the teased subjects, if possible. I did have a question: should we have our reel queued up on a player, like Keyframe Pro or SynSketch (if WiFi is available), so the reviewer can annotate on the shot for feedback? Or, should we keep it on a regular player, like QuickTime, where they have the ability to go frame by frame? Thanks again for all your content; I really appreciate it.
@jeandenishaas

Thanks! And I’ll continue this for sure! About your question: depends where you are. I would always have a local player like QuickTime or Keyframe PRO ready though just in case there’s no WiFi. At least with Keyframe PRO you can annotate as well so to me that would be the best of both worlds.

What are your opinions on putting shot breakdowns in your demo reel? Like text saying what you animated in the lower right or left of the screen. Semi transparent as to not interfere too much with what's going on.
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 4 года назад
Personally it’s a bit distracting? I’ve seen it used that way, maybe with icons and the icon explanations are in the opening card?
@Jmiket238807

@@jeandenishaas That makes sense. I've just found it difficult to find a consistent place to put my shot breakdowns. Is there a breakdown template that can provide a good starting point for formating?

Mike T I will look for one. Not up to date on formats to be honest. It’s been a while since I made one. Will continue this series soon.
