Animation Is Under Appreciated 

Let us not forget that animators are very underpaid and actors are often extremely overpaid

Good to mention animators are generally the worst treated on a production team. They get paid less and typically have no benefits. They are not invited to parties or social events in most studios. You have to work overtime without being paid. I want animators to be treated better. They make the magic happened.

I hate that animation is concidered a “genre” (especially pisses me off at the oscars) while it’s obviously a medium.

I love and appreciate 3D movies and the hard work that goes into them, but I also want western 2D animation to make a big comeback

Animation is SO under appreciated. While tabloid shows, reality shows, tween sitcoms, and insurance commercials are WAY over appreciated.

I heard some people demean Spiderverse by calling it just a cartoon, yet they enjoyed it. They said "Into the Spider-verse was good for a cartoon" Why can't they not have just enjoyed it??

I remember being a kid, watching the directors' commentary on the Incredibles DVD and hearing Brad Bird bemoan how animation was underappreciated. And that was back in 2004.

As someone who aspires to work in the animation industry, I really appreciate this video. So many people overlook animation and it seems our entire society (at least in america) tries to convince us that animation is only for kids. People forget that animation is an ART FORM. It is beyond the confines of one specific age group, or medium. For my whole life, I could never get the same amount of immersion from a live action movie as I could from an animated movie. As you said here- there is something stunningly human about animation. Something that connects with us in ways that live action never can. I can only hope that the attitude towards animation changes over the years! I would love to see a change where animation is made for everyone again, how it was originally intended.

The power of animation is that it makes it look dreamlike, a fairytale land without limits. The real life version makes the world feel limited because we know and understand that world a lot better. A villain can look crazy and creepy but still good designed in the animation but in real life the design is limited because it is not appealing to have a cartoonish villain in a real life movie.

I think that's why I'm so frustrated with Lion King 2019. I'm an artists myself, and i remember having the original VHS tape and seeing the behind the scenes stuff where the artists would sit in a room with REAL LIONS to practice drawing them with the Disney style. I appreciate the HELL out of that! Whoever is in charge rn really needs to bring back 2D movies because nobody can do color like Renaissance Disney did

Let’s talk about claymation and live action for a moment. We are gonna compare a simple action: a character flipping into a scene. Live action: the actor or stunt double is put into harnesses in front of a blue/green screen. Director calls action, and the harness moves with them as they do the flip. Done in an hour, at the least. Claymation: each frame is one picture, and each picture is taken after each adjustment of the “puppet”. If they want the facial expression to change at any point, they have to replace the head or sometimes the whole “puppet” to get the one with the different facial expression. They use thin wires to hold it up so it won’t show in the picture. Someone, somewhere, is painting up the background that will be shown on the green screen. To get a split second shot, it probably takes the whole day, not including the animation of the background. So, yes, animation is underrated.

I always wondered why animated movies and tv shows made me feel more emotion than live action. Animation somehow brings out the inner feelings of a person that can be difficult to portray, ironically, with actual people.

Idk how many people here watch tv cartoons regularly but if you wanna see some of the best things in animation right now, watch The Wonderful World Of Gumball. The production team is able to seamlessly blend so many styles of animation and film making into each 11-minute episode and they're able to push so many boundaries with the wonderfully designed characters and worlds they've created.

I think 2D animation is the most under appreciated. Disney and other companies completely ditched it in favor of 3D (as it's cheaper and "faster" depending on how detailed). I love anime but I really miss the classic animation like the Iron Giant or the Road to El Dorado. I should just be happy that people are still doing stop motion though; I've been hard pressed to find a stop motion I didn't like

This video is fantastic. Adults limit animation to being just for children, and it’s not at all fair to the animators, voice actors, and screenwriters. Animation is limited only to your imagination, and not many people can appreciate that.

It's funny because ADULTS create KID'S movies. I work at Mercury Filmworks (A Disney studio that makes Tangled and Lion Guard), and the amount of work that goes into any animated product is RIDICULOUS. It makes me more fully appreciate every piece of animation I have ever seen.

Especially the amount of time, creative design, and imagination that goes into creating every frame. truly underappreciated for sure.

Someone asked me what my favourite movie was the other day and for some reason it didn’t even come to mind to consider that animated movies could be in that category even though that’s where my favourites all are.

Imagine being an animator who loves their job, who worked hard to pay their studies and you have finally graduated. You're ambitious about all things animation and you wish to be on a major project. But then you end up working on some cash grab shit like the Emoji Movie.

One of the reasons the live-action remakes annoy me so much is they diminish what made the originals so impressive and spectacular. The fact they were animated. They were all hand-drawn. That cannot be recaptured with CGI.

All forms of animation, rather 2D or CGI or stop motion; deserve respect.

In psychology and observation of child development specifically relating to art... I feel like, as an artist, I can say this with at least some modicum of confidence... A child, innocent and full of life, views the world with open eyes and sees the beauty and the vibrancy of the world. You look at a child's drawings and there are strong saturated colors. A vivid blue sky, a beaming yellow sun, green trees and grass... you name it. When we grow up and learn to draw more intricate drawings and we base it more and more on reality, instead of the impression we get of reality... When you look at these fantastical, vibrant animated movies you get to see what a child sees. Strong vibrant colors and expressive body language and facial mimicry. When you look at the live action rendition of the same movie, you can't help but to see how cold and dim the world looks like in comparison.

I love how you can stop the hand-drawn disney movies at any minute and you know how the characters feel because of their facial expression. When you stop the new lion king at any minute you got an animal documentation in HDR-Rendering.

I'm so glad you made this. Any animation is a staggering amount of work from an amazing amount of talented people, and back in the early days was seen as an art form for everyone, but as time went on and prices changed it became "just for kids" because it's inherently "less" than live action, when in truth all it is is different. I want to go into animation, and I'm glad people are starting to see it for the art it is again.

I cringe every time I hear the words "animation is just for kids" for many reasons but mostly because I understand how much work has to go into every frame of the film. I also know that some of the best scenes in cinematic history are from animated films. The first film ever to make me understand how movies could make you feel sympathy for the characters was in fact Pixar's up. I was very young when I first watched it. Before that I had only watched mostly funny films that I would laugh at. Up changed how I saw movies forever and although other films both live action and animated have also given me experience's like it up has always remined an important lesson for me about why animation is so important.

Disney needs to stop making live action adaptations of animated films and start spending their budget on making more animated films.

Not to hijack the topic but I think skilled writers are even more underaprecciated, so many beautifully animated features get forgotten in time because the writing doesn't have anything meaningful enough to say. Having said that I agree that both cgi and 2d animators are badly treated.

We've reached the point where a hand-drawn feature film would feel like a novel invention in this day and age. I'm completely aware CGI animation takes a pain-staking amount of work too, but... *man am I sick of seeing it*

Hirohiko Araki (author of JoJo) wrote in his book that when he draws there has to be a balance between realism and symbolism. Draw the most important object with more detail but tone it down for the non important things. It's another concept that's exclusive to animation and drawings, because that balance is lost when you go live action. If you slap everything with realism like in the Lion King you get animals that just seem off and even nightmare fuel like Pumba.

I remember back when Beauty and the Beast was released and how incredibly amazing everyone thought it was. It won so many awards because putting that much character into inanimate objects through animation had never been done before and was truly astounding. The creativity it required is still relatively unmatched today. With the remake it lost ALL of that soul, and everything that made Beauty and the Beast so amazing. It's sad to think that the children today will go up preferring these new ones just because it's new and modern

The live action movies are an easy cashgrab. Have you seen love death & robots? Its an animated series on Netflix. I advise you strongly to watch it if you love animation!

I feel like it's often easier to invoke feelings in the audience through an animation than live action, just because the animation captures the very essence of a character. It makes animated characters more approachable, and since they are not real, it's also easier to relate to them. It takes an extremely talented and expressive actor to make a character become alive, and not all actors can fill all the roles. This is why some actors only get very specific kind of roles in the movies where they act. Jim Carrey is extremely funny! The way he does expressions and breathes life and joy into his characters is always funny and very comedic, no matter how dark (Count Olaf from _The Series of Unfortunate Events_ ) or light-hearted ( _Ace Ventura_ ) his character is. That's because Jim Carrey's essence as an actor is comedic, funny and borderline creepy at times. If someone ever drew a caricature styled 2D character of him, it wouldn't take you a split second to recognize who the character is supposed to be. Same thing if you take the actress Helena Bonham Carter; her essence is quirky, dark, unpredictable and a bit loony, which is why she is often casted for a role of a villain.

As an animator and someone extremely passionate about animation... I'm so glad you finally felt this epiphany A couple quick notes, though: - 'Claymation' isn't really the proper term. 'Claymation' actually comes directly from Aardman's movies, as they were originally clay models. 'Stop motion' is much more widely used for the method - Many of those sections of studio work you mentioned when talking about 3D, actually exist(ed) for 2D, as well. Things that are SPECIFICALLY 3D: Coding, computer effects (as opposed to hand-drawn effects), modeling (though stop motion does this too, just not quite in the same way), rigging, a lot of math etc. The way you animate in 3D is much more akin to how you animate in stop motion, as well, which puts many 2D animators down. Ten programmers and coders per one artist is the norm in a 3D film because of how much studio heads want to advance realistic technology. We actually had a guy from The Good Dinosaur come in to my school before the movie came out. His lecture was entirely on how they created the backgrounds with many, many computers rendering all the time... But refused to answer our questions about why the character design was so bad Unfortunately, Disney himself kinda dug this hole of 'cartoons for kids'. His movies won out over adult animation (Betty Boop etc) and were all very wholesome fairy tales meant for families. Ultimately the 80s tied the knot with kids being the target for animation. Because... advertising toys via full cartoons (GI Joe, My Little Pony, Carebears etc) Animation has never gotten the recognition it deserves. The average person won't watch animated content because 'that's for kids'. Even adult animation tends to have to be extreme in order for anyone to take it seriously. Japan does adult themes in animation much better, on average (like AKIRA), but their studios are even more worse off than American ones Want people who love animation? Go to France. But you'll find much more abstract and non-narrative stuff than anywhere else. Gobleins, in France, is considered the height of European animation schooling. CalArts is the equivalent for North America. I recommend looking up student films from both Please keep looking into animated movies! Go rep them to your friends! Get those stubborn ones to sit down and watch a masterpiece they've never seen (Ghibli movies come to mind, and Dreamworks. I love to show people Kung Fu Panda 2 because of how floored I was when I saw it the first time lol) WATCH ANIMATION!! (Also Cartoonbrew is great for animation news - and the Annies are the Real Animation Awards. The Oscars panel often don't watch the animated movies and thus a lot of the awards are... no)

As someone studying animation: THANK YOU!! Live action, 2D animation, 3D animation... They are not 'upgrades' of each other... They are entirely different Art forms within themselves! They have their own strengths and weaknesses. Like any tool, it's what people make of it that decides the quality.

When you said "Animation might just be the purest form of cinematic storytelling." I just remembered that Irzykowski, an early film critic said something similar in "The Tenth Muse" back in 1924: "When the future of the normal film belongs to the engineers of matter (the human body and the body of nature), then the future of the cartoon film belongs to the painter-poet. And it is only the possibilities of the latter movie that guarantee the cinema its artfulness. [...] For the normal film is a temporary substitute of a painted movie. To disregard a cartoon because a photographic film already exists would be as absurd as to abandon painting because the mechanism of photography was invented."

One semester in college I took a class called Francophone language and culture. And our professor played the original French audio of Persepolis to do an assignment on it afterwards. A few of people actually complained and said "why is she playing children's media for us" even when we finished the movie. Persepolis is literally a movie where the main character grows up as the Iranian revolution happens around her. Also even if it was a movie for children, why shouldn't we study it? It the syllabus never said we'd only be learning the adult francophone culture.

How many times have I had to tell my friends that I'm jealous their family watches animated shows or movie with them and that my parents don't watch anime or even Disney shows with me just because "it's animated." Too many times to count.

Hey man I just wanna say as an animator myself who is studying at university; I cant say thanks enough for telling people about the magic of animation. I really feel like your talking to me when you were explaining the effort that goes into the process of making these images move, I know it all too well! There are big things on the horizon for animation, and I believe as dissatisfaction for live action remakes grows, the demand for a return to animation will grow too. EDIT: Stumbled back on this video and saw my comment haha. I'm working in the animation industry now. I worked on Adult Swims 'Smiling Friends' and now I'm working on a new adult comedy that is yet to be announced. To say that the actual process of making animation is a challenge is beyond an understatement. And although people have this idea of a collaborative and wonderful art culture; in reality it's one of the hardest jobs you can imagine. I do not hesitate to say that this industry eats you alive and that those that can make it through into permanent employment are some of the toughest people I've ever met. The psychological aspect of pushing through the utter barbarity of this industry alone is immense. Crunches last weeks, people are underpaid, schedules are insane, and artists who stumble and fall can sometimes loose their jobs forever. Animation is beautiful, and I love it with all my heart, but if a little kid said that they wanted to be one like me... I honestly couldn't encourage them to pursue it.

When i watched the "Cats" trailer, the first question that came to my mind was Why couldnt this be made in animation ?

I have felt this way about animation for years, espically after watching Hayao Miyazaki's films.

Yeah...this is 100% correct, except for one thing. The UP opening scene COULD NOT have been done in live-action as the animators specifically used colours and framing techniques to convey the emotions behind each scene that could not have possibly been fully replicated in live-action.

I agree with all of this. I also hate how underpaid the animators are. Some people don't realize how much work it is to animate a few minutes of screen time.
