Tbh Xiao’s ult is basically his normal, charged and plunge attacks. His animation on cast has no reason to be super hard. He is simply unleashing a power up

I think you need to take into consideration the animation effects a Burst might have on the caster's Normal Attacks or Elemental Skill, and vice versa. I noticed you did consider them for Miko and Raiden, but not for others, like Itto, Kokomi, and Cyno. The changes are very noticable.

As a Sound Design student, I think Wriosthelsey is severely lacking when it comes to the sound. It is very impactful visually, but the sound is VERY lackluster. It doesn't have that setup, anticipation and pay off that you see in the animation. I feel like if they put more emphasis on that jet and impact, it would be SS for me. Animation wise, I think when he swings, they should've made the camera swing a little more harshly to match the energy of the punch. In game, it kind of just looks like a powerpoint transition LULUL

Yelan's burst is as dry as Sumeru's dessert, Lyney or Neuvillette won for me.

now do this for Star rail. considering it's a turn based game so the animations get more time to be expressive and unique.

Some of these i don't quite agree with. I'm not an animator but i do think some of these rankings don't make sense to me. Like Eula being so high but then Kazuha who's slash and build up is almost identical, and then the field too added. Then we have wanderer where a lot is put in and you even said it tells you a lot, but that's A tier, but then Yelan's where the isn't really a lot going on, is ranked S. Same with Nadida. So much detail has gone into it and i'd consider it an S too

I don't think four stars have worst animations, they just don't have the angle to support them. But if you look at the five stars animations without the angle, most of them looks weird af

Nah nah. Neuvilet's animation better than Ye Lan. I'm not a fan of both but if we are chosing, personality over quality because it's a gacha game. And i can FEEL Neuvilet's status, presence and pressure. While Ye Lan... pretty and dicey - just ok, no goosebumps.

Xiao's burst animation is simple because the real effects are on his plunges and normal/charged attacks. The animation doesn't do any damage so it's short for gameplay's sake. Also, as Fontaine characters are the newest and their animations have greatly improved over time, it's likely their ultimates will all be S or high A tier. I'm interested to see how this list will look once all of them are released.

I cant name myself a professional animator, but I did animate my own models a bit as a hobby, and so I understand the process behind. And so, hearing at the start of the video "a professional animator reaction" I was expecting a strictly technical analisys of the animation. But, honestly, that was very biased toward certain characters. Placing Hu Tao in A for "character" and then B for Yoimiya when they are equaly good, if we speaking about "character" aspect of the burst and fitting it is. Ayato does not deserve C if we, again, considering "character" as one of the aspects of the final grade. Also, very strong bias towards Yelan. A lot of characters in A grade have better bursts than Yelan. So, as a personal tier list I wont say anything, cause thats a personal opinion I wont argue with, but that wasnt really a professional opinion.

A big factor of why animations in the game can feel “too short” is the fact that the animations have to be quick because time plays such a big part in the combat. Due to this, it can be hard to extend parts. An example would be some people criticizing Zhongli’s burst feeling too long or slow. You’re constantly on a time limit in the game with so much off the content, especially spiral abyss where the time you take to complete it is what matters. This is why the animations can’t really be that long.

Ngl I feel like having to fit the burst animations into a 1-2 second time window so it doesn't slow down gameplay too much is what really restricts some of the other characters' burst animations. Also if you ever plan on doing this again can you maybe do it with Star Rail? I wanna hear some of your thoughts on the ult animations there as well

The issue with Genshin ult animations is that they need to be short or they become a detriment, they don’t have Time-Freeze like in Honkai or a turn-based game like Honkai.

If you make this tier list maybe a month later, Furina's burst would definitely be the champion

Barbara in 10x slowmo does the heart thingy with wink. It's the most frame heavy animation in the game, they really put a lot of effort into this, you can even check frame by frame.

There’s something about Wriothesley’s burst that tickles the unga bunga in my brain. I love him and Heizou for being catalyst users who eschew the “mage” archetype for being elemental brawlers, especially Wriothesley’s more aggressive boxing attacks and skill.

The fidelity is not great on mobile, which is the video you were watching for the animations, not sure if that would affect your decisions but just putting that out there

I love animation, but only doing this whit the "cutscene" doesn't help whit the ranking + for some characters have an élémental normal attacks (Kokomi fishes are little bigger and water effects are more notable, Raiden Ei has "her" Katana, Itto normal ult attacks change effects and has a spécial charged utl attack and I hope I didnt let other characters behind) But I understand why you did just the "cutscenes" elemental burst

Cyno and Xiao's bursts have more effects during the combat portion of their bursts. So I'm not sure that's 100% fair assessment of them since you also took into consideration some of Raiden's active combat visuals as well as Dehya's full burst duration which includes her gameplay portion (while she's punching.) Of course, you don't have to consider the entire burst duration, but I'm just saying... I'd put Cyno in high A tier and Xiao in mid B tier when considering instead

Some people are forgetting and judging based off effects, while he is mainly ranking the animations of the models.

I am currently working on an animation that has a moment similar to an Elemental burst. After trying to make one myself, i realise how many VFX go into one of these. I've added a few effects and the frame still looks empty.

If you look closely in Ayato’s burst, there is the Sakura tree of the Grand Narukami Shrine.

Some characters were placed *lower* on the list *because* they had *minimal movement.* Yet somehow other characters were placed higher on the list *despite* having *very minimal movement.* So...... doesn't feel quite unbiased to me hahaha ;)

Dillon, you should check out the bursts as a whole by effect (from a distance) and do a different tier list. Some of the bursts effects are fantastic, like swirling maples and so on

I wish you would've chosen footage that was not recorded on low graphics settings. On high settings on PC or PS5 the models, animations and particle effects have extra oomph and flair. You mentioned the close up of Mona's face model not holding up. Well, that was because these bursts seem to be recorded at potato settings. ;)

I don't see what makes yelan better than keqing or raiden shogun or neuvillette. Imo,her burst animation is in same tier as itto.

I believe MC has the best burst animations. Epic cutscenes are bursts. Voiced lines are elemental skills. Funny facial expressions are normal attacks. Cool downs are locked behind quests though.

Very happy about Nilou's ranking! I say it's so much better when her burst line is "All eyes on me!" because her commanding voice clashes yet matches her elegant burst animation.

I just started this but I can't take you seriously after you put Venti's burst you called basic above Diluc's burst which you said has a cool phoenix , where both bursts is almost identical in idea and execution. You're literally contradicting your own words, brother.

I have ZERO knowledge about the process of creating animations but I can tell that bro was really strict on grading them LOL. I think some of them could've also included judgement on their normal/charged/plunging attacks (Raiden, Itto, Xiao, Cyno, Hu Tao, etc.) since for Raiden they're technically a part of her burst but I also get that we're just grading it based on the animation. Great video and I also think Yelan has a top tier burst animation (my bias is Hu Tao btw). There's actually already a video of Furina's burst animation and it looked pretty nice. We're just gonna wait for a follow up video once there are more characters added to the game.

Raidens burst is still my favorit. I think it is perfect. she is swinging the legendary musou no hitotachi. It is absolutely fitting, that she swings it rather halfheartedly and it still completely obliterates the space and enemy in front of here. This lets the weapon feel so much more powerful. Also i would put Childe, Xiao and Dehya higher. The afterflow watereffects of Childes ultimate are not appreciated enough. Xiaos mode burst feels much more powerful than for example Cyno or Itto. This dark green aura and shaking hand is just awesome. And for Dehya use her burst by tapping the attack button fast, it just feels so much more satisfying and looks way better. It feels like she is getting in some kind of rage mode with every hit gettting faster. Also Wanderer is S tier. Pretty animation and extremely disrespectful towards the enemy as it should be.

Having watched your HSR and HI3 animation reviews prior to this video, I think the short burst animations in Genshin contribute a lot to how enjoyable the combat is in Genshin. They are fun but don't take a lot of time or distract from the combat, instead you have this nice short animation and then often you get some really good combat effect. I appreciate how the animations are so concise in Genshin compared to the other 2.

I havent played Genshin and Honaki Impact in a some time, but it is interesting how the ult animations are seemingly made based on time length. Honaki Impact- Newer ults tend to be longer, but certain ults pause the timer(If there is one). Genshin Impact - Ults are made to be short and consise to not detract from time limit. Honkai Star Rail - No time is considered, just any animation. This is over simiplified and may not afix well with all ults in the game, but I just thought up of some connection.

my favorite part of lyey's is that it puts the focus on his hat while he disappears, to emphasize the "misdirection" of the magician theme.

Theres a place in old mondstald ruins with a series of ring wind field that connect the centre area to a ramp at the outskirt, when you go from the centre and the moment you hit the ground, you will still slide forward abit, casting the burst at that moment will make it look even more cool for some character.

It's understable they do better that 1.0 , region too from Inazuma to Fontaine you can encounter so cool spots for fotos

I see why he likes Yelan over Lyney's. While both are, functionally doing the same thing which is posing,, the execute it very differently. Yelan's still has the sense of conservation of movement, which is something that this youtuber REALLY likes. That and impact frames. The camera and framing transfers her body's turning momentum into the string and the die to get those great string arcs and that spinning die arcing across the screen. Then when you get that pause for the pose, the die is still spinning so it turns into an anticipation moment rather than a pause. Then the animation gives you that payoff by exploding the die in the foreground and zooming the camera out for the final pose where she's framed by the strings on the field. She's standing still, the strings are similarly still and the black screen is working with the camera to draw your eyes completely towards her. It makes her the focus coming out of the ulti and the pose itself is dynamic and uses her character model to get those nice, clean, long lines to compliment the strings around her. Yelan, her strings and her die all work together to form a cohesive concept with her at the center. By contrast, Lyney is not the focus of his ult, his hat is. You get a brief look at him and his winking expression before the camera zooms out and he throws his hat in the air. He disappears into, what we assume is the hat, but the ulti doesn't communicate that very well. The hat has great momentum as it moves up into center then arcs out and it has taken over as the focal point. But the background and the FX don't escort it along to give the camera a sense of movement to compensate for a lack of limbs or that nice long shape language that communicates a transition. So, when you're moving to control the hat and it's a little jarring because the camera doesn't move with it and it feels more like a "We're here now" rather than a natural progression. And then the black cat with the black hat against a bright flash of a background that then turns black and relies on the spotlights just doesn't help, in my opinion. On the flip side, we have the final pose of him jumping up, but it feels very static and weightless. We have his upward movement and expanding body, but again, nothing is moving with him so the upward movement feels floaty rather than as actual movement. So with that, we're now relying on the foreground action lines, but those are going away from him which just robs him of even more momentum. So...now we're really relying on the cat FX, which feels like it detracts from his posing, in my opinion, because it's so much larger than he is. I kind of feel like the cat's engulfing him so Lyney can get lost in it. Aside from that, the communication is not very good, in my opinion. If you'd have told me that Lyney was a Geo character, I'd have believed you. I know he has the fire effects going, but I would not have directly connected them to him. They're kind of out of the way and seem like they're a part of the confetti rather than an indicator of Lyney's element. This is juxtaposed to Vill-V's ult, in HI3rd, which I feel like communicates the whole magician character to hat to gameplay transitions much better. We see her with the hat, we see her throw the hat down, we see her in the hat and we see the hat turn into a tank which is now player controlled and we get great camera movement to transition the player from character to ulti cutscene to that tank gameplay. Lyney's Burst is flashy and bright and it has an interesting concept, but I think the execution of it could've been better. And Yelan is just objectively better from an animation standpoint as his mirror. Everything works together to compliment the character in these frames for her, whereas poor Lyney is in competition with his own FX and hat. Just my opinion, of course.
