I love Kiyone. She's competent, level-headed, and most importantly she's _not_ in love with Tenchi. That makes her stand out amongst the other girls, besides being the perpetual straight man to Mihoshi's antics.
ya know what me too sage. dude your videos are the reason I stopped paying comcast. stay awesome.....also....no more superboy prime references....please
Superman changes his posture, demeanor, clothing, and wears thick glasses. And yeah, as a glasses wearer, you be surprised how much not wearing them shocks people.
Yup, that would be even more stupid. Not that "unobtanium" isn't code name for non existing material needed to push plot of SF story so everyone reading it would know that, but because it isn't a energy and bad cliched stories totally would do that.
@Dennis Taylor From Wikipedia: "Since the late 1950s,[a][1] aerospace engineers have used the term "unobtainium" when referring to unusual or costly materials, or when theoretically considering a material perfect for their needs in all respects, except that it does not exist." So it is a scientific term, that it is overused by bad SF is other story.
Fhe funny part is that unobtanium was originally a funny name that engineers came up with to describe a perfect material you could use to plug a hole in a design. Want to a build a bridge but the support cables need ge o be twice as strong as diamonds but need to be flexible? Unobtanium. Need an engine to run at 110%efficiency? Fuel it with unobtanium.
Here's my headcannon concerning the Mihoshi Special, this is a story from Mihoshi's perspective. More specifically this is supposed to show us what her memory is like with the truth warped by fallacies and misconceptions to the point where it's impossible to untangle one from the other. Now consider that thick report that she sent to Galaxy Police HQ (in Season 2) and what sort of odd story the Juraian Security Council had to wade through as they struggled to separate fact from fiction, THEN crafting a redacted report that STILL looks like it was written by Mihoshi. I for one pity those poor bastards, wouldn't you?
"Noooope, I suppose nooot!!" I love how you delivered that line, that was just freaking hysterical, along with your comment about washu saying someone's being naughty on the Internet, I nearly died from laughter. Also I too freaking love Kiyone.
29:43 really sage you only have 4 clips, Madbull 44, Tekken the motion Picture, Boah(has a lazer cannon) and Eight-man After, but no Full Garzywing(it's not worth looking to make sure I spelled tht right) I'm disapointed in you.
he did ask on twitter what memes did people like the most. The garzeys wing episode is on spoonys site so I don't think people know of it as well as us.
I know a lot of the comments are already about Bennett's weight loss, and not about the review here, but... ...really proud of you for the weight loss, BtheS. Hope the pain thing starts to get mitigated soon.
Oh my god. Is it 16:35? That's when Bennett the Sage, esq., references Madoka Magica, the 2011 anime? The there's-nothing-good-after-the-90's guy referencing a 2011 anime? I can die happy now!
until literally just now I always thought that "pretty sammy" was me mis-remembering Tenchi and mixing it up with Sailor Moon. I saw this when it hit American airwaves when i was about 8 so i figured it was one of those crazy things kids half remember... how did "a childs fever dream" become the most plausible situation?
I'm half convinced the Tenchi Muyo series is about a troupe of actors playing similar characters in different adaptations on the same source material. Like a Shakespeare company specializing in one play with a revolving door of directors.
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed. So somewhere out there, there's a bunch of his chub floating around. Waiting to be cast into it's true form. A body pillow.
On the plus side of your weight loss it looks like your skin is starting to stretch properly against your body. Keep maintaining and you'll l likely not need to get surgery after all in 2-3 months
Bravo, Sage. This is easily one of your best episodes. From the amazing line-read to the Gendo appearance to the VA cameos to Kyubey popping up to all the other amazing jokes (Washu is totally Al Gore BTW), I was laughing the whole time. If this is what you do for Episode 198, I cannot wait to see what stops you pull out for Episode 200.
www.funimation.com/shows/sasami-magical-girls-club/ and Pioneer dubbed this part of the Tenchi multiverse. tenchi.wikia.com/wiki/Dual!_Parallel_Trouble_Adventure
Apparently the _Pretty Sammy_ TV series _was_ released State-side sub-only, but I imagine that's _waaaaaay_ out-of-print at this point. Which sucks, the TV series handles the parody much better than the OVA did, especially when it comes to the monsters of the week. And Pixy Misa. Oh my God, _Pixy Misa_ (and Sasami's dad) is a treasure.
Probably not actively in print, but it's still available to pick up from retailers/resellers for decent non-ridiculous prices. Although my personal copies are the subtitled VHS tapes that I bought one a month as they were being released back in 1998. I never watched the Pretty Sammy OVAs, so my first introduction to the character was her very brief cameo during Tenchi Universe. Still, comparing what was reviewed here to the actual TV series, the TV series seems to have been a lot more fun. The second TV series, Sasami Magical Girls Club, I watched just one episode of before dropping it as not being as entertaining. And the fact they completely changed up the art style.
Sasami Magical Girls club is available to see in Funimation NOW. English Dub, and has been so way before this review aired....despite sage saying otherwise.
I liked how the Mihosi episode ended with Kyonie floating around on a hammer like the villain who survives the end of an episode hinting they are going to come back again.
Extremely proud of you and your journey man. I’ve subscribed to this channel when it merely had a couple thousand subs. As far as I’m concerned you are still the most underrated anime reviewer on RU-vid. Keep it up!!!👍🏼
I assume most of Mihoshi’s “successful escapades in the past” we’re actually due to Kiyone. Of course, there’s also the possibility that she was once competent/intelligent, but suffered severe psychological trauma or brain damage at one point-ultimately turning her into the semi-retarded ditzy waif she is now (that was actually my original theory for her backstory).
28:54 It sure is a great feeling finding a new meme, isn't it? I always wished Nobunaga's line in _Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love_ "What the hell is this?" could reach that level.
I love your videos and I'm not even an anime fan, people ask why and I point to stuff like this haha. I was approaching 280lbs and now I'm down to 220 and still going, seeing you lookin all skinny and strapping, it's motivating me even more. Congrats bro
I gonna break some news to you Mihoshi is best girl I love her while Ryoko dose more and Ayaka dose absolutely nothing in any series Mihoshi in her own way does things she has this odd luck about her
CORRECTION: the second pretty Sammy anime WAS dubbed. I recall watching it on the funimation tv channel. So guess whaaaaaaat saaaaaaaaage? Review Sasami Magical Girls Club
I showed the Mihoshi Special (subbed) to my anime group and it was a total love-fest! Because we ALL GOT THE JOKE: that Mihoshi was the ultra-ditz who was basically making up this whole story as she went along, and the loudest howls of laughter came when Pretty Sammy came in out of left field! This ain't "Utena" or "Escaflowne"; nobody is supposed to take this seriously! The first two Tenchi movies, yes; they play fair consistent with their own rules. But this was a hilarious one-off and that's how it works! Likewise with the Pretty Sammy OAVs; they're the series re-imagined from Sasami's POV; although the second episode's parody of Bill Gates is pretty funny.
I'll give Pretty Sammy OVA this; at least the character's kept their relations with each other. Unlike Magical Project S where Ayaka is the surprise-twist villain who you don't meet until the series finale, Ryoko is a noble soldier whose been disguising herself as a power ranger (until she reveals herself in the series finale), and Tenshi only exists for a single episode (sans a cameo in the series finale) where he's a TV producer of a kid's sentai team show. And he breaks Sasami's heart because he doesn't like her the way she likes him because she's a child and he's a grown-up. Which would make sense, but they play it out as seriously as the most groan-worthy "senpai will never notice me!" Also, Sasami has a mortal dad whose whole shtick is that he's a "dandy," and it's treated like a lagit superpower, and he even helps Pretty Sammy save the day with by the power of Dandy-ness. -_- Say what you want about this OVA, but while there were more episodes of Magical Project S (and sorry but the 3rd Pretty Sammy anime was just not worth my time), this OVA was probably the BEST adaptation of a magical girl series centered around Sasami ever made. Which I'm aware is not saying much.
12:29 hate to burst your bubble sage, but they did dub one of those pretty sammy animes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ME-dXUFMuUc.html
Sorry, nope. Magical Project S *still* has no English dub. Which is a pity cuz it is worthy. Unlike Magical Girl's Club, which is brain cell killing garbage.
zoppie I fully agree with you. Why did they do a magical girl anime that was so outdated that it was so obvious. Like literally magical girls using their powers to help people is like the type of stuff that they did way back before Sailor Moon even was created. Heck by the time Sailor Moon came out the magical girl genre was pretty much dying because of people doing the exact same stuff magical girls using their powers to help people. I think they should've made it similar to Sailor Moon but do it's own thing.
Actually there was a pretty Sammie anime dub (the right one) in like 2007-2010 on funamation tv. They where like witch magical girls and washu was their science teacher plus task mission person.
ZombiiChixx all of his videos that have the hat in them deffinently makes them ALL "awkward" to say the least......I mean what happens now? The yellow hat is just going to be there....forever in all his past videos
16:19 Ah yes, the infamous “Batman spontaneously becomes a DJ for some reason” scene. Even though I unironically love Batman Returns and think it’s kind of underrated, that scene always stood out as weird and out of place which, given that Batman Returns as a whole is really freaking weird, is really saying something
Biff Standard was pretty much specifically a Bill Gates parody. When Windows 95 came out, it came with full Japanese localization, which meant that idiosyncratic Japanese PCs, like the NEC PC88 and PC98 series and the Sharp X68000, had much less of a reason to exist. For Japanese computer enthusiasts in the mid-90s, the switch to a standardized platform and OS was even more dramatic than in the USA. Of course you had to be a pretty big nerd to understand the reference anyway. For a long time, most Japanese normies only ever saw the internet through their cellphones. Don't ever say Pioneer LDC didn't understand their audience.
Fun review as always. I honestly don’t know if you have a working list or take recommendations but one I remember as being fun - not Dragon Half fun but pretty damned close - was Shinesman.
I really don't think Magical Girl Pretty Sammy is a by the numbers magical girl anime as you say it is. It may not necessarily be satire, but I'm 99% sure it is in fact intended as a parody of the genre. The bit about Sasami worrying that people will recognize her because her costume makes for a terrible disguise, and then people fail to recognize her anyway is very obviously intended as a joke poking fun of magical girl anime. You're not supposed to suspend your disbelief and accept that people don't recognize her, you're supposed to laugh at how absurd is the fact that they don't. If this anime making this joke isn't enough, the Mihoshi special actually made the exact same joke, albeit executed differently. The whole point of the special is that Mihoshi is an unreliable narrator, so you're not meant to take anything that is happening in the story that she's telling seriously. Near the end of the special, after the day is saved, Ayeka says something like "I wonder who Pretty Sammy is". Again, the expectation isn't for you to suspend your disbelief, it's for you to laugh at the absurdity of Ayeka not recognizing Sasami. The show is not playing magical girl tropes straight, it really is making fun of them.
I have a question. Can I get a list of exactly what magical girl shows I need to watch to understand Madoka? l have only seen Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Ultra Maniac!, Card Captor Sakura, and Hanako no Lun Lun as far magical girl shows go, which I know only scratch the surface of the genre, so I'm worried I'd be going into Madoka completely clueless. I'm guessing I'd also have to watch Sally the Witch since that's the first one? I assume Creamy Mami is essential because that's the first idol magical girl show, but is that the only idol one I need to see? I'm told Minky Momo is important in general, but I don't know if it's important for Madoka, and why it' apparently such an important anime. Is Pretty Cure the only "action" magical girl show I need to watch to comprehend Madoka, and if so, which Pretty Cure shows? Is Nanoha required too? I know Cutey Honey also arguabley predates sailor moon for fighting magical girls, so is that required? and if so, which version for Cutey Honey? I've put off Madoka because despite being told it's one of the greatest anime of all time becauseI'm admittedly put off by knowing I'd have to invest heavily into a very expansive and rich genre I know nearly nothing about. But if I know EXACTLY which shows I need to watch before watching Madoka, in order to at least get the bare minimum comprehension of what it is trying to do, I think that'd help a lot in making it less intimidating for me.
Give me a break! I brought the Mihoshi Special (subbed) to a club meeting back in the days and people were falling out laughing! It's clear that she's making it up as she goes, so no harm. And the Ohki Ex Machina is still hilarious! And even Pretty Sammy 2: Revenge of the Imperial Electronic Brain has its moments.
