I actually liked the Dark Tournament Arc because there was plausible reason and character motivation for it. It developed Characters, both Heroes and Villains, and gave side characters a chance to truely shine. Better than any other Tournament Arc I've seen in anime.
Some Tournament arcs are good, but the majority do feel like the writers just slapped "insert filler here" during the rough draft phase and couldnt be bothered to actually fill it with anything. A few series I've seen have literally stuck in a tournament arc when the manga wasnt finished or they were rushed and needed to by themselves some time or to stretch a season out. Some martial arts series actually do a good job of it since its A: justified in series and B: they actually use it to tell a story/add character development
It's easily the worst tournament arc I've seen and seriously hiei was absent for 2 rounds as well as genkai and in the first round he only got a 4 minute fight and every fight kurama and kuwabara had sucked
Sean Maguire I’d say HxH’s tournament arc was better paced but then again when both YYH and HxH are made by the same creator and are the the best examples of tournament arcs that shounen has to offer then we can safely say that he knows what he’s doing~
Personally, I found the tournament in YYH to actually be well done. It got old having DBZ always have a tournament and then it never get resolved because of some plot thing. Cell is throwing a tournament! Oh wait, he destroyed the ring and doesn't care about a tournament. World Tournament? Nah, Boo is being awakened. World Tournament in the movie Fusion Reborn? Nah, plot. At least YYH actually made a tournament and finished it.
The original Dragon Ball had three tournament arcs that were all great and all ended normally. Of course it made allot more sense back then since Goku wasn't defending the world he was just a trying to improve as a martial artist and fight strong opponents.
TeamTowers1 I've never managed to see DB all the way through, half on account of Toonami never airing it and anime companies not forcing it like they did with DBZ and half on account I haven't had the time/money to sit and buy/watch all five seasons. I'm hoping to get to it eventually because I feel like I may enjoy it more than Z.
well the goal of cell's tournament was to kill him, or thats basically why they competed. that did happen, so technically cells tournament was resolved
Joppuman But Cell is the one who set up the tournament for no reason. If the Z fighters had set it up, your argument would work, but not when Cell created it and helped them achieve their goal.
BackToBaskin while i see where you are coming from, i dont agree, but its been quite a while since i watched that part of the series, so i cant really make a good rebuttal. So ill give this one to you... but only this once. Although i do think the tournament in the boo arc was resolved, if i remember correctly Mr. Satan won, because he paid 18 to throw the tournament, or at least that was what was supposed to happen, i could be wrong. It may not have happened because of the whole vegeta becoming evil again.
Yes...and no. Aesthetically...I frankly find Yoshihiro Togashi to be lacking. Many of the designs are not even functional for what they're trying to be. Storywise however...yep. There's just more character overall.
***** And it's even funnier because that's only in the States. Ashita no Joe is a LEGEND in Japan(it got such a treatment not even ONE PIECE has gotten yet: Real life funerals for the fallen characters. That are 100% born from the fans) Talks a lot about how narrow minded popular perspective can be.
American Show runner :His name is Kazuma Kuwabara. Voice actor: yeah I got it , I'm Karlton kookaburra American Show runner: sure that's good enough, we can fix it in post
***** After all this time, why has there not been a crossover between these two? Fuck Sailor Moon Crystal! I want a Sailor Moon/Yu Yu Hakusho Battle Royal! The Dark Moon teams up with the undead for an all out battle for ALL worlds! Also, everyone gets their own transformation sequence. EVERYONE.
Meredith Caudle That would be an fun and interesting idea, however it depends on how both creators think of the story for it. and how both worlds would link
Afrika Smith it's because of the very superficial similarity of Shouen, and big theme park versions of Asian culture elements. DBZ has wish granting dragon, Yu Yu Hakusho has youkai, good and fair lord of hell, Naruto has ninjas.
People don't compare YYH and HXH because the similarities go without saying because the author is the same. and both shows are the same genre they have a lot of the same themes like the arcs are quite similar like the Chimera ant/Chapter Black arc are dark and kind of explores the darkness of humanity and what makes someone human and they both have political arcs Three Kings/Chairman election arc.
Probably because there is no point Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic anime no doubt about it, but there simply is no money in dubbing this. The last note worthy Yu Yu Hakusho thing to be released was the blu ray and that was years ago.
***** Well, the full ending is in the manga...I think the anime ended pretty well, but the last volume of the manga makes a nice read for some interesting closure.
Aren't Kurama and Hiei's kind labeled as "Yokai" not "demons", technically speaking? Cuz there's another certain type of species that also identify as demons.....
I'm a hardcore fan, but I can't stand either movie. As ambitious as this one is, the beautiful animation, it's just SO WEAK. I didn't remember the dubbing being this bad, but "Kuwahara" still hurts.
Jo Smo It's because the people who adapted this movie went with a very direct transliteration of the Kanji that make up his surname. Not TECHNICALLY wholly incorrect, but still a bit wonky. This little snafu has nothing to do with the people actually doing the dubbing, so it's not fair to pin it all on them. It's not like this was a particularly rare thing to encounter in English dubs of yore.
@@callumkristofer7793 that just sounds like wonky continuity to me. It's not at all clear where in the series this is supposed to take place. Yusuke doesn't use a drop of demon energy (and is still in school) , Hiei already has the Dragon, and Kuwabara still has his regular (non dimension - cutting) sword. It drives me nuts.
I'll tell you one thing, while I vastly prefer DBZ the series, this movie seems to do something DBZ movies never did: give everyone an equal opportunity to shine.
Chris Conley Toei (and, indeed, practically every one of Toriyama's editors and/or Shueisha) were the real culprits to blame for the supporting cast to be turned into nothing more than glorified background characters for the series they assure you is ACTUALLY called "Son Goku's Variety Show + Vegetables, We Guess". That's why Toriyama had his arm twisted into completely kneecapping his own story by bending over backwards to completely undo the major point of the Cell Games and regress Gohan's character from Earth's New Protector to Goku's Older Son. Goku wasn't meant to come back because it was GOHAN'S time to shine. It's quite literally what the whole of Z was so painfully, obviously building towards: Gohan finally gets full access to his untapped power by overcoming his rage and surpassing his father. It's instances like this that makes it easy to villainize the editorial staff of manga publications, but I'd be remiss to not also mention that one of Toriyama's editors is the sole reason why Androids 19 and 20 weren't the big bads of that whole saga as opposed to Cell. His comments managed to get Toriyama to add in 17 and 18, then Imperfect Cell, then SP Cell, and finally Perfect Cell. So there's some good, at least. ...Unless you, like, REALLY loved the fat mime-bot, in which case more power to ya.
how dare YYH use the overused Tournament trope. Never mind that it was executed extremely well and provided great action and character development. Never mind that it was YYH alongside DBZ that set this trope in the first place.
You know what really slays me? The dub actor that's doing Yusuke's voice in this movie would've fit right in in DBZ...or JoJo. Imagine him yelling "DIOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
I honestly enjoy Shonen, most of the time. Still being a fan of Dragon Ball and enjoying Fairy Tail. But there's just one thing I hate.. When a show starts off with a rather entertaining premise but then it devolves into endless fighting and/or needlessly convoluted plots. Like Bleach and Hitman Reborn are prime examples. I started to read both and I absolutely loved the direction they had them going in, but then boom, all the charm and fun is sucked out.
I had the same problem with Toriko. When it started, I actually like the whole gourmet/cooking gimmick, but it very quickly devolved into a bunch of generic fighting and I lost interest. Luckily, shortly after, the manga Food Wars came along and did a much better job satisfying my cooking itch.
+Jordan Thomas Bleach is an anime that was good but it got made into something it shouldn't have been! I mean the plot sometimes can be seen as inspiration from Inuyasha sometimes
Not to mention the thing that bothers me the most with shounen animes - the writer ALWAYS forcefully gives EVERYONE a love interest sooner or later they end up together with... and of course, it's ALWAYS heterosexual couples ONLY. Because god forbid a gay character (particularly male gay protagonists) would get to find someone to end up together with of the same gender... apparently.
And now, some of my favorite lines from when Lanipator abridged this movie: Kurama: "Have you ever watched the dub of an anime and then watched a completely different dub and felt it didn't sound right? Well, that's the effect the Nether World will have on us." Yusuke: (Sounding old) "Man, if that's what you guys sound like what the hell does Kurama sound like?" Kuwabara: (Sounding like Dr. Weird): "You don't want to know!" Kurama: (Sounding like Stitch) "I hate all of you."
After a few years since this review came out and multiple viewings of the entire series, I can say the Dark Tournament arc is legitimately solid, objectively.
honestly I laughed at kurama saying black dragon wave not we're doomed cause that's what he would say in that situation but im used to dragon of the darkness flame aka the correct way this isn't dbz Kamehameha wave also I've seen yyh abridged movie which makes fun of this dub so yeah....
Okay but I totally want to listen to that toonami cut music in the gym. Also this was my first experience with terrible 90s dubbing and darker animation so this will always have a special place in my heart ❤️ Thank you for covering!
Jesus… I keep coming back here becouse this one makes me laugh so much. But I always think of this as being a ‘newer’ episode… then see it’s been about 10 years and realize iv been a fan for longer then i relised
the only show that managed to match DBZ's raitings in japan (and i don't mean just anime it's the only show in al of japan that got the same numbers as DBZ when they were both on the air)
It always bugged when Sage says the tournament arc is always the worst part of a shonen series. Let's look at some tournament arcs. Dragon Ball, Hunter x Hunter and Kinnikuman's tournament arcs are officially the point were all three series got awesome. The tournament arc in Reborn is the only good arc in that series. Naruto's tournament arc is the only part of the series that is generally held in high regard. Shaman King is considered excellent and the entire series is one big tournament arc Not to say that there aren't bad tournament arcs (because there are) but the idea that they are always the worst arcs is clearly nonsense.
Which arc in Reborn! are you referring to? Because there was a few tournament arcs, my favourite was the Varia Arc, but there was also the Choice Arc, The Curse of the Rainbow Arc and the Inheritance Ceremony Arc.
To this day this is litterally the only piece of Yu Yu Hakusho media never dubbed by the Funimation group, even now they managed to dub the more recent OVAs yet this movie has never been dubbed by them and even now I don't know why.
interestingly enough, you pointing this out exposes a glaring error on both the translators' and producers' part: they never bothered to watch the series, or at least the movie, in any way, shape, or form. this mistranslation would pass if this was an American adaptation of a manga. this was obviously not the case though. it's a pretty lazy move on behalf of this company, and I kinda wish Bennet would have pointed this out. he has talked about something like this before. I realize the task of translating this movie would have been difficult for the company, but considering the popularity of Yu Yu Hakusho, laziness shouldn't have been allowed. I wonder if these guys still have something resembling a business? TLDR: the company was too lazy to watch the movie.
I usually like tournament arcs. For once, we have someone to root for, but we don't know if he will actually win. Also we can see a power comparison between characters who would normally not fight against each other. The first two tournament arcs of the original Dragonball where excellent. I just hate aborted tournament arcs. About the shrine in the parking house: It is Japan, there are shrines everywhere. I live in Paderborn, Germany's most Catholic city and there is religious imagery everywhere too.
honestly I think the dark tournament is one of the best tournament arcs, if not the best tournament arcs, in all of anime. great villain, awesome fights, with the betters going AGAINST the team they run into circumstances where they can't always send their best fighters out. it's a good arc that has a lot of tension and amazong characters
Brendan Milburn I can understand people's issue with the length but for me 40 episodes is a good length for me. The fighters all have unqiue and interesting powers and for anyone who is able to handle long as fuck anime it's a damn good time. I've always found myself drawn to anime with higher episode counts cause it means the story isn't just gonna end abruptly as soon as it starts get going *cough cough* berserk, gantz, no game no life, made in abyss.
Shounen is also not typically written to be good stories. It was written to sell lots of merchandise, so you'll often see huge character casts, colorful character designs, magic systems (or similar), and needless filler to stretch out the series and delay the main plot so that the company can continuously milk the cash cow. While shounen can have depth and complexity to it, it is also often put into simple words and simple subplots so that the target audience can understand it without trouble. So artists like Hayao Miyazaki and Tite Kubo are on completely different planes from one another. Miyazaki aims to make high quality art. Kubo aims to make more moolah. Some people like to see an expansive world that grows endlessly. Some just want a good story. It's very difficult to obtain both.
We need to spread the word to FUNimation re-dubbing and re-releasing on both DVD and Blu-Ray of Yu Yu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report. With original cast members playing their roles again and five new ones. We need to make it happen.
In my opinion FUNimation is almost close to BS as 4kids was. Maybe not as bad as 4kids cencoring and bad dubbing, for some of the series anyway, but somehow I can see that FUNimation is on that path with DBZKai and, in my opinion, FMA:Brotherhood.
NAVEMAN3 the yu yu hakusho dub was actually close to the script since the script writer watched all of the episodes in Japanese before they did he casting process
Oh the New Kyoto Arc, I thought that was just a retelling of the Kyoto Arc. Does it focus more on Misao? Either way I think it is out, since it is more recent.
Ur too tough on YYH.. every character is different, the drawing are great, n the show has a dark feeling to it. YYH is one of the sickest anime to be viewed on that time.
I bought the dvd of this movie when I was high school at GameStop not knowing what I wasn’t getting into. And let me tell you watching it was painful. I took the dvd back the next day, never 👎 again! 😖
Hey Sage... YYH is my favourite anime because in Brazilian Portuguese they went all out on slangs and emotion. They made no effort on being PC and actually delivered what is considered in Brazil, the best brazilian dubbed anime ever. The battles are also fun and the characters interact very well with each other. Today it would all be censored.
"If you think that I'm making a Styx reference, then you're fooling yourself." *realization about what he said.* "DAMN IT!" And now you're an Angry Young Man. X-D Also, how did you get Tom (Toonami) to mention Anime Abandoned? Also also, it's good to see that I'm not the only one who's seen Buckaroo Banzai.
"No no no, Botan's the ferry(wo)man of the dea--" -ONE BLURB EXPLAINING THAT BENNETT ALREADY KNOWS LATER- "...Well shit. Maybe I shouldn't have had that sandwich first."
Gotta agree with Sage here. I may not have been that big of a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho, mainly as I didn't get to watch the full seasons of it, but it certainly is one of the few anime I've seen personally and actually enjoyed. And I'm WAY too used to the Funimation dub. Once Kurabara hit the scene in this... cringe. Just, cringe.
I was first exposed to yuyu hakusho when I was in the second grade. It was initially aired in a fairly unpopular local network that learned to import Japanese super sentai and anime to fight the ratings war until the more dominant networks bought the rights to broadcast such shows and was able to enjoy relative success through perfect timing.
Cynthia Roundtree Quite frankly, I'm surprised no one has noticed that the guy hes bashing is not only Brock and kaiba from Pokemon and yugioh, but hes also Gourry from Slayers. Sage must not be too big a fan of dub to not know who Eric Stuart is.
Script Weaver the thing is, he only reviews dubs. Still, for every good role Stuart does, he turns in a bad one too, and this is one of the bad ones...
yeah I can agree with that at least. Dubbing was still a new field of work back then and Stuart was probly still in college or something like that, lol (thats how the story usually is)
I met Justin Cook and the one question I chose to ask him was are they trying to get the rights to this movie cuz it really needs them. I can do sub or dub but certain series I prefer one or the other and I just love the dub for yu yu hakusho, besides ENSATSU KOKORIYUHA!!! (Dragon of Darkness Flame) cuz that shit is pretty epic
michael dorsey He was really cool and when we first me him, we had no idea that was him. Just looked like a regular guy and 5 min later we found out that was him we were shocked. when he yelled spirit gun we all lost our minds... lol
I'm not going to act like Shonen anime is worth heavy praise, if anything it kinda kneecaps the possibillity for other shows to get some attention in the west. But to give some credit where it's due, without them the Anime scene wouldn't be nearly as popular or even that well recognized in western media. Of all anime I've seen, Shonen is low on my tier list for personal favorites, except one: FullMetal Alchemist. Specifically the Brotherhood remake. That series, despite being classified as Shonen, is much begter in terms of quality. No elongated arcs of filler and needless plot deversions, superb voice acting, and the common tropes of the genre are minimal and don't detract from the overall story. Out of all the Shonen anime, FMA: Brotherhood is definately the best.
FYI, that was Ted Lewis who voiced James in that clip he showed. Not Eric Stuart. Eric didnt start voicing james till episode 9. That clip was from episode 7.
+Frost Rose I'd still give it to Yu Yu Hakusho. It was more head to head with it's conflicts which managed cut loose a ton of exposition. Which for me creates the perfect balance between plot and action. HxH beat around the bush too much, and I didn't get anything I cared for when it did that. Just a preference thing for me.
For me I just get bored watching fight after fight so I like hxh better since their aren't as many fights in it and all of the fights have great amount of detail and stragty to them. Not saying I liked the intire thing though. The ant ark was iffy for me since the narrator never shut up as well as the greed island ark since the aniagainst sucked. GON AND KILLUA ARE STILL WANT TO CUDDLE TILL THEY PAST OUT LEVEL OF CUTENESS. (ALSO WHY THE HELL IS KILLUA THE ONLY CHARACTER WHO CHANGES OUTFITS ON A REAGULERLY) sorry for bad spelling.
+Frost Rose Both anime are great. HxH was better in terms of plot and complexity with the universe, and yu yu hakusho was much more likable and had some extremely unique characters with much character development :D. Both great animes.
Guy number 1: Hideki Anno, creator of Neon Genisis Evangellion. Guy number 2: Go Nagai, creator of Cutie Honey, Devilman and the ecchi genre of anime/manga. Guy number 3:Ken Akamatsu, creator of Love Hina. All 3 are refered to as "evil" by sage for something they have made that he had to trudge through.
I'm going to have to disagree on a couple things. Mainly concerning some comparisons to dbz. Firstly, I think "never escaped dbz's shadow" is a matter of opinion, as some, myself included, hold this show in Much higher regard then dbz. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy dbz, just to a lesser extent. I just don't get as invested in the stories, and think there's too much fluff. That's not to say yu yu isn't guilty of having fluff, it's just to a lesser extent, and the series in general isn't Nearly as bloated as dbz, what with their nearly 300 episodes. Also comparing Genkai with King Kai, is pretty harsh on Genkai. King Kai becomes irrelevant pretty early on in the series, except for as a makeshift telecommunication device, and that one time goku blew up cell there. Hell even That is a testament to King Kai's uselessness, more or less implying that King Kai's place was the only place of no real consequence he could think of to bring cell, and then they all die (except cell of course). Hell when Genkai dies, there's actual Weight to it, people are heart broken, and mournful, how many people Other then goku, in the main cast, even Realized King Kai was dead? Of course, then they pull the bs dues ex wishia, and make everything better, which I thought was bullshit, but at the end of the series they imply that Genkai is more then willing to let herself pass on, and makes plans for the crew to take care of her property, and all that pass through looking for sanctuary. What did King Kai do, aside from teach goku a couple of moves that become all but irrelevant almost immediately in following story arcs? Seriously, I'm having trouble remembering. ALL THAT being said, I really, Really didn't like this movie. I saw it before I was even Aware of the series though, and it's a Very poor way to get introduced to the series, for obvious reasons. Shit, as soon as they brought up those magic japanese elemental sights, I was having fucking Tenchi Muyo In Love flashbacks... In closing, I'm not trying to stir up any shit, honestly, just trying to point out the subjective nature of audience feedback. One type of audience member may lean more towards dbz, one may lean more towards yu yu, it all really depends on the individual. For me, personally, I connected more with yu yu, which made Bleach really disappointing for me, as there were more then a few familiar elements. Anywho, I know this is late, since this episode is almost a full year old, but keep up the good work!
Red Cloud Dude, you do realize when he said, "never escaped dbz's shadow," he meant the shadow of popularity, not quality, right? General audiences just cared more about DBZ even if Yu Yu Hakasho was better. And that is not a matter of opinion, just general observation.
Red Cloud Yeah, Bleach just became a poor imitation of Dragon ball Z and YuYu Hakusho, most notably with the tedious *My Reiatsu is bigger and stronger than yours, thus you cannot hurt me, so I win* ripped from DBZ's power level aspect. Ichigo's one of the most boring ass characters ever conceived despite having traits from both *Goku* and *Yusuke.*
Yeah but that's because DBZ was longer and a sequel to an already established and beloved anime. Had Yu Yu hakusho come out first then people would simply see DBZ as an inferior version of YYH, which by all accounts it kind of is.
I think the dub was great... even in retrospect I'd rather hear them act poorly at times as opposed to nowadays where it's the same 5 funimation actors in every single dub
This is the result when these movies were dubbed by different companies in America before anyone got the rights to dub the anime here. Thank you Lanipator for your abridged episodes.
Of course a Man of Steel joke, because those jokes haven't gotten old since the five thousandth time someone made it. Superman didn't cause the building to fall, Zod did with his heat vision, physics made the building fall that way, as for the other building he flew into again that was physics doing the work. I love how people think: "This guy has been a superhero for about 24 hours now so he should be perfect at it by now even when he's thrust into a situation that he didn't expect would happen." Good review though Bennett, I laughed a crap ton. The OH MY GOD WE'RE DOOMED part almost made me have a heart attack from laughing. Spirit Gun? Really? Gee that isn't in anyway similar to the second most iconic move from Dragon Ball Z is it?
Kuwabara... it's weird. In the anime series he sounded like an anthropomorphic blender trying to gargle marbles, nuts, and bolts. It was awful... But hearing _this_ Kuwabara speak... is so ordinary it's jarring! I want the blender gargling nuts and bolts, please!!
You know it's something that I wierdly noticed when I first saw this movie, I feel like there's some really weird romantic sexual tension going on between yusuke and botan
