Sorry that you thought Ruby choosing her weapon was wrong. However, the reason she drank the tea was to become someone else, not improve herself. By choosing her own weapon, she's remaining true to herself. She's not running away from her issues, she's choosing to stay and confront them. She's allowing herself to grow, rather than becoming something else. That's what I got when is saw this, though.

I would say, Ruby did change. So far she always tried/wanted to be "Ruby Rose who is just like her Mother. Ruby Rose who is just like the heroes in the stories. Ruby Rose THE Hero.", but now she chose just to be "Ruby Rose the Huntress"

The reason why she chose her weapon was explicitly because of the flashback with her Mother. All her life Ruby has viewed her mother as the pinnacle of a Huntress, and what she strives for. She viewed herself as a failure because she had to struggle so hard for what she thought her mother did easily. That's why during the Herbalist scene, her old self says "Mother was the best, but even she failed". She realized then that her mother delt with the same problems she has been, and even she kept secrets. Ruby picking her weapon is basically overcoming seeing huntresses as heroes of fantasy, and realizing the struggles she has been dealing with are part of being a huntress; A part she can now handle. Its not about Ruby not changing, its about Ruby realizing she doesn't need to be perfect
Not only that Ruby was devastated that the perfect image she had of her Mother was shattered when even her mother lied. However that realization means that she can become something better then that of even her mother that she idolized so much. (psst btw I don't think her mother's dead but that's just a hunch)

Add to that we now need to know about her and Raven's connection, and I don't think Yang's gonna trust much of what Raven says after their last meeting (plus no lamp questions left).

The traumatic theme warning for Chapter 7 was because the Paper Pleasers could be interpreted as being suicidal. Granted, it’s different since they are Afterans, but it’s a topic that could, and from discussions online did, affect several people.
I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding going on here. Summer saying "I love you just the way you are", and Ruby coming to the realization that she's enough just the way she is isn't signifying that she doesn't need to make changes in her life; it's saying she doesn't need to become someone else entirely. The blacksmith was saying "you can choose to be any one of these heroes", but remember that previously Weiss said that each of these heroes failed. Ruby is simply saying that she doesn't need to become someone else; she is just choosing herself and evolving from there. Ruby also only realized later she hadn't been giving herself enough credit. One small act of kindness - giving Little the cheese back in ep 1 - brought about Ever After's new protector in Somewhat. Just like the message she sent out to Remnant in vol 8 that she had convinced herself changed nothing... changed everything as it united Vale, Mistral, Menagerie, Atlas/Mantle, and Vacuo to come together and fight Salem as one.
Ruby's also sorta learned to just be Ruby Rose, rather than trying to be the big hero. She can be A hero, as a huntress ofc, just shouldn't take the whole burden upon herself.
The timing for this plot's message was on par with my own life. On the day before the finale of this season, I had another mental breakdown. Between college and looking for jobs and a place to live, I felt like a failure at every turn. I told my girlfriend I felt useless and like I felt like my failures were dragging her down too. I figured she didn't see it that way, but hearing her say it helped a little, but usually airing out my frustrations and sad thoughts makes me feel better afterwards. I went to sleep sad that night, woke up and watched the finale. I thought "I wonder if her choosing summer would cause her to inherit some of her traits, maybe regain hope, who knows? I just hope the transformation helps ruby feel better or like the person she wants to be." Then when she realised that 'enough' is a bs measurement and she wouldn't want to be anyone but herself, I cried my eyes out. These episodes couldn't have come at a better time in my life. I need that.
i love the last shot of the volume, because from the different styles you can tell the ships over vacuo are from all over remnant. after spending the volume wondering if they did more harm than good, we see that their message was received. their call for help wasnt in vain.
Throughout this volume, Blake & Ruby have 180 degrees switched roles....Blake is now the eternal optimist, always looking for the upside of a bad situation, a way forward.....while Ruby is withdrawn, sullen, isolating herself just the way Blake did back in Volume 2.
The main reason Ruby's core issue was resolved as fast was because they didnt (and still mostly don't) know there is/will be a Vol 10. And there is no way they would leave that question hanging.
Yeah I'm hoping there will be at least a 10 wrap the story up. I'd prefer a rushed ending to no ending at all but I'm hopeful since we seem to have a bit of a time jump and a setup for the final battle with Salem in volume 10. and I know some people are still saying hey what about the Becan relic? That is easily resolved. we know Salem has people there trying to find it so she figured out Oz's trick and got an now only needs the sword from Vacuo, or Oscar and Oz went back to Becan during the skip and brought it to Vacuo. again kinda rushed but it closes up that hole nicely
I think people have misunderstood about the tree. Yes it can give you new purpose and what not, but more importantly, it give you the CHOICE to undergo that change. Ruby choosing to remain true to who she is, is more powerful than becoming someone else, who could possibly have no connection to Ruby herself.
Surprise, rock bottom has a basement! I didn't really have a problem with how the show handled it. Ruby is naturally a very optimistic person, and I can easily see her overcoming it when she actually has a chance to let out her feelings, and I think both that vision of Summer and the final message telling her that she loved her just the way she is helped a lot. It could've gone on longer, but I'm fine with it. But! Raven has some explaining to do, and I hope it gets addressed since the last time we really saw her she was portalling somewhere.
My question is who exactly is Raven making a portal to? Remember, her semblance allows her to portal to those she's emotionally bonded to. Tai and Yang were both home, and I don't think Vernal was around at that point in time. Unless it's another new character she bonded with we've yet to meet, the only other person she could possibly be going to is Qrow. And if that's the case then both Raven AND Qrow have some explaining to do.

I took Ruby choosing her own weapon to be not her immediately getting over her issues, but rather just accepting them and herself along with it. That she doesn’t need to be an entirely different person to be worthy of being a huntress and a leader, and since she was previous comparing herself so hard to the image of Summer that she had in her mind as a perfect, selfless huntress, it makes sense. She needed to see that Summer wasn’t entirely perfect and that she doesn’t need to be either imo.
been wonderful taking this journey with you! My favorite thing about Ruby choosing her own weapon is that we know the other choices would mean giving up on herself entirely. She would throw it all away and dodge all the issues she had. she would give up her friends and family if she did so. but she was able to realize through the Ever After and her mother that SHE is enough. She doesn't need to be someone else. She just needs to be Ruby. And I think she's not done growing and changing. This is just her reinvigorated to fight back and take on her problems
The thing about ruby choosing who she could be, is that if she chose anything except herself, it wouldn't be Ruby Rose who came out, it'd be random person, who doesn't remember being ruby Choosing herself wasn't saying "I never need to change/improve" it's saying "I don't need to fundamentally change, I just need to continue improving who I am"
There was theory someone commented on Summer Rose’s Wiki page that I think lines up pretty well with the events of her last mission we saw in this episode. Credit for theory goes to Blue.Cheese2 Raven and Summer were partners within team STRQ. After Oz entrusted them with the secret of Salem, the Grimmified witch who commands the creatures of darkness, it leaves the team in disarray. Summer, knowing what her Silver Eyes can do, decides to try and defeat Salem herself without telling anyone "hence it being a "Summer Secret". Raven catches her right before she leaves and tries to get her to not go and possibly die. Summer gives her the optimistic speech (Raven recognizes this tone in Ruby in Volume 5) and convinces her to tag along. They make it to Salem's lair and fight her. The duo manages to actually kill Salem. Temporarily. After seeing the witch resurrect herself, Raven goes into shock. Now in complete fear, she summons a portal to escape. She begs Summer to come with her, but the huntress stands her ground. Raven abandons her. Summer fights Salem more, using her Silver Eyes as a final resort. The attack causes cracks to appear on her skin, but still isn't enough to kill her. Salem eventually apprehended Summer, ready to kill. Summer tells her that she will be stopped, even if she can't be killed, and Salem throws her into the pool of darkness. She later realizes that Summer somehow survived the pool, and starts to experiment on Grimmifying her, eventually leading to Salem experimenting on other Silver Eyed Warriors. This headcanon explains Salem's origins for experiments on Silver Eyed Warriors, Summer's secret mission, Raven's fear of Salem and how she KNOWS she can't be beaten, and how Salem can be injured.

The reason there wasn’t a end credit scene was because we’re now heading for vacuo as shown before the credits for Volume 10. It’s also the same reason they didn’t do a end credit scene for volume 7 as volume 8 was the next focus and straight into action.

I agree Ruby's Arc was resolved too quickly, this Volume really could've used 2-4 more Episodes but here's the thing: Ruby is not 100% mentally and she most likely never will be again but at least for now her Mother's words helped her realize that she is enough as herself. Her mental health will become a point of contention in the future, especially when the subject of Penny is brought up again. Ruby still doesn't know Jaune killed Penny after all.

When they got back to Remmant, it was on the future. And it gived a beautiful implicatión: Rubýs message of hope, the one that Peny took to the stars, hit the mark and reunite humanity together in order to fight Salem.
They did protect The Garden from jabberwalkers yes, but they also caused the jabberwalkers to attack that place, so not only did they ruin a town, they also perma killed that one bird selling mud cookies. Also the Curios Cat's mission was to make sure all the Afterins could go to the tree and be reborn, but now that cat is gone indirectly because of them
Haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but I'm assuming they've ended up further in the future rather than into the past as when we see the shot of Vacuo, in the sky, in the top left corner, is amity coliseum which was last seen still in Atlas. And unlike when it was seen for the vital festival, it has the upgrades that were supposed to get it into orbit. The group (other than Jaune who was there for years) were only in the ever after for a few days, and it seems unlikely that the whole coliseum got all the way to vacuo in that short a time. Plus, all of what i would assume is the remains of the atlas military is there and there were two books called after the fall and before the dawn which take place in vacuo after the fall of beacon but pre end of volume 8, and iirc, there wasn't a whole fleet of ships from atlas there. so yeah, while we can't get a specific time, that all at least implies that it's been around a month, likely even more, since they disappeared.
I am so happy we got to have this journey together! I don't like watching reactions to things I haven't seen, but I have watched My Dress up Darling (it was so cute!) amd Chainsaw Man, so I will definitely stick around for that. I'm also excited to see what other things you post.

I think her loving herself the way she is might be her motivations of who she is as a person and have confidence that she can handle what life gives her and can change and grow with it.
two things 1: even if you end up not making content i want to watch id probably stay subbed since i like you analysis of things and reactions in general and just in case something new comes out you watch or perhaps something i like id want to know and even if i don't like the stuff you post as i said i still would stay subbed unless like 2 months go by and i don't like anything which rarely happens anyway. 2: i think Ruby choosing herself is more like accepting her faults and all who she is as being enough and coming to terms with the fact that sometimes all you need is to believe in yourself and take a good look at what you are doing instead of running and changing everything just cus its too hard at the moment to be you, like drinking the tea wasn't her wanting to be better it was just her not wanting to deal with this anymore and wanting to be someone else, she was never thinking of improving its was just to run away hoping to forget everything. and for all we know her choosing herself is the only reason she has her memories back fully instead of her being human being the reason since we don't know for sure. Also do you really think they would get rid of Crescent Rose? the weapon Monty specifically designed to be hers and also the poster weapon of the series basically?
There are actually 2 hints to Lewis in the opening. At the very end, when it shows the tree, there are two blue streaks that fall from the sky, the same two blue streaks that jaune saw when he was waiting for team RWBY to fall, which ended up being Alyx and Lewis. Also, near the end of hte trailer, when ruby is falling through the 'mural' there's a picture of Alyx, and Lewis is behind her in shadow.
I do agree with you that the ending arch of this season felt a little rushed, but like you said; I just thought that this must have been planned for 12 episodes then they had to compress them. Might even explain why episode 9 was so short. But something you said Beef actually helped me to frame the reason she choose her own weapon in a little different light. Forgive me because I can't seem to find a time stamp of what you said that lead my thoughts together. All through the show, Summer has been hyped up by everyone, "Baker of cookies and slayer of Monsters" and more. But during the flash backs to Summer, I think Ruby realized that her mother, her hero was in fact not perfect. She didn't do everything right and still die. She had lied to her family. A very Raven like thing to do. I think Ruby was trying to not only be the hero of stories. She was trying to live up to the stories of how perfect and fallible her mom actually was. Plus! As my D&D group and I call it. Ruby and Yang now have a character story hook. With the flash backs we now know that Raven knew more about what happened to Summer then she ever let on. So if/when we get season 10 and on. That should be interesting.
This volume deals with Imposter Syndrome; The answer to imposter Syndrome is never 'Become someone else', but 'Accept your issues and continue growing'. The only way she could do the second is to continue being herself. That's what choosing herself and her own weapon meant. You're interpreting it as accepting stagnation, but that's not what it is; she is doing exactly what you're talking about; accepting her flaws and improving herself. Becoming someone else(i.e. choosing another weapon) would be to -give up-.
Jaune's outcry at the flooded village sounds just like the cry he made when he helped Penny end her life, signaling that losing the village hurt him just as much emotionally. "On that bridge, I was the only one who could do it, the only one! and now I have to live with that forever."; he's talking about Penny, of course, but unless Weiss filled them in with that detail while Ruby was unconscious, she's the only one there besides Jaune who knows what he's talking about. Very sad.
If you study their facial reactions to Jaune's statement, Yang's face doesn't move, she has no idea. Blake's reaction is like "huh?", while Weiss's expression is one of sympathy and pain.
The first episode the warning was because the pleasers were essentially talking about suicide, one with a rebirth but still its round about the same deal. You know how jaunes been done dirty? Notice the deal he makes with leaf Alex

Also-also, Jaune is now basically a 50-year-old man in a 20-year-old body. I'm sure he's glad to be free of knee/back pain again, but that's _got_ to come with emotional baggage. If we get a Volume 10, I really hope they'll address that,.
1:16:19 While I think the explanation is a little speedrun, I think "The Smith" used an important phrasing here, with the weapons. "It's not about who did, but who could." "Can you feel the woman who might hold it? The weight of who she is?" "She could be you. You could put any one of them on! And leave Ruby Rose behind." I think Ruby takes that seriously, more than was allowed to be explored and articulated. You can stop being Ruby Rose, you put on someone else's face, their trappings. But how much does that change, and what does that cost? Does it even fix the problem? Maybe its a little lame/cliche, but the old concept of "the only thing I can be is me" is still a strong one, I think. Especially paired against the line "Can you feel the woman who might hold it?", when you pick your own weapon, that you forged to be an extension of yourself. Which, now that I think about it, she's always strove to be like her mom. The colors, the way she dresses. But also built her weapon a little different, a scythe, emulating her mentor Qrow. Chasing ideals. (side note I've had a long running feeling that Qrow will be revealed to be Ruby's father, but that's a different can of worms) But to be sure, we had a whole lot of slow burn and build up to kinda just slap a proverbial bandaid and hot glue and call everything hunkydory. These seasons always seem to get shortchanged.

Yeah Ruby's issues were resolved a little fast I'll admit, but I think she really just needed to vent and there wasn't even time to do that since Volume 8 but now not only does she get to let out what's been bothering her for so long but someone is there to tell her "hey do what YOU want" you don't have to be this or that just being you is fine. That was enough to get her back on her feet at least and then realizing her friends and family are there helped, and finally seeing that she had done some good by just being her kind hearted self in inspiring Little to become the ever after's new protector who would spread that kindness, and finally that her message to the world got out. Honestly I'm suprised no one brought up the fact in would probably take more then a day for people get to Atlas.
The burden of leadership can be isolating....it's a trap that Ozpin fell into, Ironwood fell into, and now Ruby has as well. Leaders that can grow can learn to swallow their pride and ask for help, be vulnerable enough to show their pain. Too often the impulse is to put forward a brave face and hide the internal conflict...and sometimes that's necessary...but long term it's counter-productive.
I love the ending to Ruby's inner conflict, but definitely think it was missing a building block? Maybe she could have learned to share the burden with team RWBY, the lesson being no matter who she became it would always be too big. or if they just wanted her to be more about general self care, she can give the cat a speech like WBY did to themselves in Chapter 4

The tree can do time travel shenanigans and they are sent many months, possibly a few years, into the future into a time where they are supposedly "needed most" as if they couldn't have made a massive difference if they were sent back to before volume 7 and the end of Atlas and Mantle. But as I have stated to another, that would take competent writers to do properly and CRWBY hasn't had a stellar job with that for a good long while now.
Turns out all ruby needed was a bit of tree god therapy. Tho I do see ruby's decision for her own weapon less solving all her personal problems and more that she accepts that she is going to have her flaws but becoming someone else is not the right way to go about it
I would have preferred physical changes aside from Jaune's hair highlights. I was expecting more change when he took Alyx's hand being different to help fight off the cat then maybe going back like he did at the end with atleast his rusted armor on but in new condition maybe even keeping the helmet or knife. Ruby's was too quick nor was i a fan if it either "what i am is not enough" "you could be different" "you could be better" then it's nah I'll still be me there was no growth hell this makes what ren said pointless back in Mistral when he was on about not liking who you were is proof that you're not the same person, proof of growth and that you're never done growing. Being in vacuo now same as when they fell aside Jaune being a better fighter its pretty much they could have ran right to the tree picked up jaune let neo overdose on leaves and have the same result.

In a way I feel sorry for the Curious Cat.....he was truly cursed....through no fault of their own....but from an unanticipated design flaw the Brothers didn't even consider. They could probably fix the cat, but they've effed off to do other stuff. They're like neglectful landlords and builders....they love building and creating new things but they hate doing repairs & upkeep....they're Galt-going goombahs....the jerks!
No, the last scene was clearly a time-skip of at least a Month or more......Ruby's message had the intended effect.....the skies over Shade Academy with ships from EVERY kingdom in it....Vale ships, Atlas ships, and even Mistral airships....and somehow they managed to save Amity from crashing and move it to Vacuo. Ruby just didn't really appreciate the massive logistical undertaking this all entailed. My theory is that ships from Argus Base must've scrambled to go and rescue Amity initially....and then Caroline Cordovan decided to do the pragmatic thing and recognize Winter as the legitimate Atlas authority in exile instead of challenging her in a power struggle. Argus Base remains the last outpost of Atlesian technology and culture, for better or worse.

I would suggest Rwby Fairytales next. There is some interesting lore in there. Maybe watch 3 episodes per reaction, I think there are 6 episodes total.
“Did they go back in time?” You know it’s really unclear. If they did it couldn’t be too far back as the airships above Vacuo look modern. If they did travel in time I would guess only a day or two so they can meet and protect the refugees as they exit the portal. That’s only a guess though.
no it is not unclear. They are clearly in the future. Amity arena is now Amity battle station, it slowly flew to Vacuo and got heavy modification, that took MONTHS. And there are ships from the other kingdoms too, united in defense. Quite a bit of time, but not so much that Salem has obliterated them yet.
Her whole issue in this volume is imposter syndrome. That's not me saying either that is straight from the writers. By choosing herself she is rejecting the imposter syndrome and being what she is at her core. A total badass.
As everyone else said, I think you grossly missed the mark on the point of Ruby's arc, and why it was told. Ruby has always been ENOUGH being who she is. Ascension isn't about a new weapon nor is it about changing little parts of yourself, it's about your path on who you want to become, and Ruby *needed* to be told that she was enough. Despite everything, it's still you. And in this way, Ruby becomes a better version of herself, she becomes a version of herself that's not weighed down by the expectations of her mom, that she will never be enough because she can't ever measure up to her, and all she really needed to hear was that very same mom telling her that she was loved JUST the way she is. Thus, a perfect Ruby Rose was born, one not held down by past failures, but to push on and become a huntress. On another note, Volume 10 currently lives or dies on Crunchyroll viewership/Movie sales, so I understand your position due to the demonetization (which you should reach to RT about because that is not typical of them to do so), however, indirectly encouraging people to pirate can potentially cause for us to never even get Volume 10, which is something we all don't want. this has been said already, but i honestly dont know if you acknowledge when people correct you. ruby choosing herself wasnt a choice of "im not going to change," it was a choice of "i CAN change, and i shouldnt give up on myself" also, even if neo came back exactly as before she jumped, she still wouldnt be able to come back. the only reason the cat didnt cross is because neo didnt have anything attaching herself to remnant. and if she came back as someone else, she'd have even LESS reasons to go to remnant
Though we did not see Ruby resolve any of her issues and how that situation was quick they can’t just leave this show with her unresolved especially with how long of a wait this show takes for the next volume to come out. Yeah it sucks that they pushed it but yet I understand why they did it that way. Maybe when volume 10 comes out that will be the volume of her discovering more about her and what she needs to change in order to be the leader everyone needs. The one time they left RWBY on a cliffhanger was on volume 7 and we had to wait nearly a year for volume 8. That was a risk cuz volume 8 may have not even been given a chance. Well now you’re all caught up. Welp now for the fun part. Now we WAIT Also RWBY and Justice League cross over was ok. Wasn’t the best but wasn’t the worst.
I really highly recommend the series Helluva Boss for you, which is free on RU-vid. Only one season and a few episodes of season 2 so far, so it should be quick. I think it's 100% your type of humor and can also be surprisingly sweet sometimes. It's about the furthest thing from advertiser friendly, but the creator loves reactions so you won't have to go through any sort of copyright-claim process.

I'd like to suggest the first short series you do be RWBY: Ice Queendom, a 12-episode anime that came out between RWBY volumes 8 and 9 and which puts a different spin on RWBY volume 1. I really want to see your reaction to it.
I very much think this volume is at risk of being relegated to a filler arc, but that isn't a shot at the artistic work. Filler arcs are not inherently low quality. The reset at the end is the main problem. The physical impacts of their journey are fully reversed, and none of the characters who they encountered continue. The arc is very well made, but I can count on one hand the changes that would seem out of place as simple off screen developments or minor inconsistencies in how a character is written. All of this changes if the existence of the Ever After becomes important later. I have a theory that Salem could intentionally enter the Ever After so she can go to the tree and be remade, escaping her curse in the process.

while i don’t necessarily agree with your take and i think it was a good idea to have her stay herself due to the message, but i do agree with your reasonings for your opinion on it! i do think the buildup should’ve been a little more calm if they were just gonna have an underwhelming ending when they know what we all expected i guess? i also think you’re right about it being rushed, im happy with the result but not the lead up into it. i think if the lead up to her choosing herself was more intense you would’ve been happier with it.
This is hardly goodbye, for RWBY or for your reactions. As you said earlier you still have the remaining Chibi reactions, those trailers you mentioned, and the Justice League crossover. However, there's also the Volume 9 soundtrack when they get around to releasing it, the anime spin-off Ice Queendom (which takes us back to the beginning to tell us a new tale, and then there's everything else you'll be doing while we wait together for Volume 10 and beyond. Speaking of Volume 10, I have a theory about that. I think that Ruby and her friends are going to be facing a quandary of what they are supposed to do now that they are "when they're needed the most." Do they go to Atlas, maybe tell Ironwood the truth before Salem gets the chance to break him down and make him distrustful of them? Do they shut down Watts and Tyrian before they can make a bad situation infinitely worse? Do they save Penny's life, or even stop her from becoming a maiden in the first place so that she never even becomes a target? Or do they stop Mercury from accomplishing whatever Salem had sent him to do (I believe that he or Tyrian said that he was going to Vacuo.) Volume 10 is likely to be even more turbulent than the previous 3 volumes were, with the group wondering which events they should change and which they should leave alone, with them later wondering if they made the right choice or if they made a huge mistake, not to mention their reaching the point where their knowledge of what's coming up becomes useless as they have changed things too much. It's going to be rather interesting.
Idk I like this season but there's a few things that I would prefer they did differently, my main complaint being I wish there was like 1m episode in the season, I think if there was another 15 min episode between 7 and 8 to maybe give a little more neo backstory to add a little more sympathy, and build up the doubt in Ruby to let it come to a final and more satisfying conclusion in 8, also could have squeakers be a little angle on Rubys shoulder so its more tragic when Ruby abandons him and he gets squished, and it would give more of a happy feel w squeakers in the end when he is reborn. Idk I just really feel like this season woulda hit harder if there was an episode building up neos character and breaking down Rubys before she "drank the tea."
Hopefully we get a season 10, discovery Warner media is canceling projects left and right and Rooster Teeth had to lay off a bunch of their animators, thats why they made the deal with crunchyroll to be exclusive, Hopefully it does well on crunchyroll because season 10 depends on them renewing it
