Reasons why Lakan is surprised: 1.) his daughter right now is hurt enough that she needs to be carried out and is unconscious 2.) if Jinshi is as high status as presumed - him personally carrying maomao has HUGE implications 3.) Lakan may had suspicious of what may happen but had no idea that Jinshi was fully marked for death if he was able to see what happened inside. That would turn his suspicions into pure facts.

Remember that Lakan - 1) did his own investigation at the scene of the warehouse explosion 2) is the one that told Gaoshun about the official who ate the poisoned seaweed, which led Gaoshun to ask Maomao for help 3) told Jinshi to ask Maomao to look into the metalworker's will and his three sons 4) knows who Jinshi really is
And he also gave him that metal thingy ... it looks like Lakan was giving Jinshi the clues he needed to figure this thing out, it's like he's testing him. If he's smart enough to solve the puzzle and survive then great, if not... the country doesn't need an incompetent leading it in the future.
Did not Lakan indirectly caused the death of the official who like the sweets, and I have no doubt he was also behind the death of the metal smith. I believe he was also the one who gave the smoke pipe to the guard and then framed the court lady. He put everything into motion, is my speculation.

@@firemaiden029Jesus I wish someone would cut the guard some slack, but I will admit o also want some punishment for him, just not a beheading. Remember she purposely goaded the guard to create a commotion. And in this case, she woefully miscalculated. In her panic, she chose to aggravate the guard instead of explaining properly as alternative. Also remember that Maomao is extremely adverse to anyone suffering on her behalf, even if it is the culprit. She didn’t even snitch on Suirei even though she had strong suspicions. She also provided Fengming with a way out to minimize the fallout of her actions.

She also has a principle of "if this is gonna get me in trouble in someway or another, I want nothing to do with it", this is why regardless of how many times it is glaringly obvious that Jinshi is of noble birth, heck the brother of the emperor, she has never let it register in her mind that this dude is not a eunuch, this dude is a damn prince. Because in those times that kind of information can get you in trouble or worst, can expire your life earlier than expected, especially for commoners. She was just very cautious.
Lakan didn't plan any of it, he just knew about it before Maomao. He's the one who had Jinshi sent Maomao to the metalworkers house to solve the riddle, because he knew that's what was stolen, he even discovered the pipe at the warehouse before Maomao and left it there. He was helping her discover the plot, he just didn't care to save Jinshi despite knowing there was such a plot going on lol
Helping her discover the plot?? It's not like she was trying that beforehand... he's the one that set Maomao and Jinshi on the path to finding this conspiracy. So yeah, he wasn't going to do anything to stop it but if Jinshi was smart enough to put it together and save himself... It's a test to see how competent he is or they are.

Lakan did not plan it and the guard wasn't in on it. The former is a court investigator/tactician and the latter is just a muscle-head. And Lakan is probably surprised because the literally imperial prince is serious enough about her to carry her out personally. I don't get how can people misunderstand this so much. And before I get accused, No, I'm not a manga/LN reader, I just pay attention. The anime lays this out well enough IMO. Though I have no idea what's the deal with Lakan, but after this I'm pretty sure he is not after Maomao's life at least. He looked genuinely angry at her being hurt.
It's a bit strange that Gao Shun wasn't there with Jin Shi. We can assume he has went to get hold of the imperial doctor,. There should be other servants with a carriage at the bottom of the stairs, or the entrance imo.
@@exia0616 The anime worked really hard to make him look suspicious. In the trailer before the second cour, it shows Lakan smiled followed with the explosion. Even in this episode preview it shows Lakan saying something and then cut to the guard hitting Maomao. Basically he is a red herring to fool the viewer
This story is rare in the sense that it gives us all information we need to come to the same conclusions as Maomao, it doesn't show half or about if we're lucky like in almost all other investigation type anime/manga stories to make their leads extra smart. if u follow well u'd be able to tell by yourself all the conclusions Maomao came up with even a bit before her. Then seeing them come about is so satisfying. Lakan so far, played as a bad guy, but what did he actually do anything bad so far?
Jin Shi did not have a strong reason to openly show that he values and trusts Mao Mao so much so that he awarded her some kind of badge-of-authority. Now that Mao Mao has saved his life in-front of officials, he can if he wants to. He knows that the more he displays his affection for her, the more he would inevitably set her up as a target for harm though.
Lakan is shocked for a number of reasons....let's call it my speculation.......one of the many..... for someone of Jinshi's status to carry her out, rather than a servant or anyone else, is massive.
untill the last episode, he was trying to buy Maomao out. he probably just realized that there's just no way that's gonna happen... plus she's badly hurt. the whole situation is shocking if you consider the time and positions of those involved.
Unbelievable episode! They have been laying the groundwork for this for months! Everything starts to come together so suddenly, partway through this episode I was like "Oh, shit. It is all about to go down, like right fucking now." Amazing payoff.
That officer could have just slapped her with that big hand of his and that should have been enough, he didn't have to use that thing to hit her but I guess that's part of the drama. Poor Maomao I felt that blow on my face too :-( She is so smart, brave, and considerate since the beginning, and in any of the cases she has been involved in, she has tried to resolve and help the people involved like in the case of the babies being sick and now trying to save Jinshi.

That was how they did things in the Past. They didnt had "moral standards" back then as we have, and anyone suspicious got beaten. The worst thing is that even in the Past you had People like that Guard sitting in "important" Position who had a short Fuse. He also used a Metal Mace as we saw in the Manga that was part of the equipment for stopping People "without inflicting serious Injuries" like you do with bladed Weapons (thats how they were thinking about it)

I think Lakan was just shocked and didn't expect what kind of thing happened in the temple that made his daughter's leg hurt until it shed a lot of blood, as a father he must have been really sick seeing Mao-mao fighting so hard to save Jinshi without caring about his body, I mean Lakan would have known The thing that the woman who smelled of medicine was planning, only she didn't intend to stop it and just sat as someone observing from afar. And don't forget that most of Mao-Mao's intelligence is a gift of DNA from Lakan's father, so I wouldn't be surprised if Lakan knew first about the situation and the woman's evil plan to target Jinshi😅

as a Manga reader, not novel, so I wouldn't know if this seen was written there, but I like this scene with Jinshi carrying Maomao passing next to Lakan, as his reaction to seeing his daughters motionless body in Jinshis hands. About the fact how he can see her beaten FACE and unconscious really shocked him enough to actually show a reaction at all. As to why he's there, I'll leave it to Maomao herself to explain in a few episodes.
No, I don't think the novel had it either. It's from Maomao's POV so she just fell uncoscious and wake up next. Lakan's expression seeing Jinshi with Maomao is something.

Since around ep 6 I had Apothecary above Frieren, despite Frieren being such a masterpiece, but I love mysteries and our little mad scientist cat. I hope after this episode at least some people come to agree with me. Lakan is sus, but so is herb lady... but there was always this one guy during those incidents... i think at least 4 people were involved and if even those fireworks are involved it could be even the new concubine aggh so many people acting sus and no answers yet

Yet in the real episode, the order of event is that Maomao got hit first then he was saying something to the guard. He had been shown suspicious so many times before, but is that all there too it?

Dont know why so many people are upset that our boy is making up his own theories or trying to correct him. Like isnt that the whole point of watching someone react, especially to a mystery anime? Anyways, i'm waiting till we learn more about Lakan but even though he's sus, it looks like he cares about maomao's well being so that got me confused. This show is sooo good. I ended up reading the manga, normally I can wait for season 1 to finish, but whatever week they were on break KILLED me. Not to worry I'm not a spoiler. Maomao is like the second female character I've seen take a concussing hit and still get up. I admire Maomao so much, she's just so smart and pretty and her own person. Even if she doesn't get that he's not a eunuch. I just squeal whenever she's doing her thing. One thing I noted was that they all bowed to Jinshi and let him pass. And Maomao was passed out so of course she doesn't get to see this. The dude that hit her.... yea his head can roll, cause why did you feel the need to put not only your hands, but a whole club to my girl's face. Also Lakan was scary in this, he really looked like he was about to kill this man.
I realized that a lot people doesn't like the romance in this anime, probably including you. But honestly I'm here for it. Ik it's not a romance anime, romance is just a subplot here. But Iove their dynamics and I'm always waiting for some jinmao moments :3
Nobody outside of the imperial royal family know that Jinshi is the crown prince, Lakan didn't know he was talking to the crown prince so casually beforehand. Thats why the swap prior to the birth of the empresses and concubine is so hidden. The one who died to the honey was the Empresses son and not Jinshi instead. The reason why all of this is happening and why they are trying to kill jinshi is because (And no this is not Manga spoilers but my insight on this entire thing if you know what... Chinese "politics" were like back then. This is not a man doing this, but a woman trying to get rid of line of succession by killing Jinshi, to become empress instead by having her heirs become next line in succession. Thats the reason why all the babies back then were dying in the first place regardless if anyone knew of the face powder. This is all a power play obviously, one that came with slight defects here and there, but of course nobody is able to piece it together unless they overlapped like they did here. Edit: Also - 太子万岁 .
It doesn’t make sense for Lakan to be responsible because letting Maomao through or even slightly helping her only deceases the chances of the assassination attempt to succeed. If he was involved, he would have either had her arrested or stayed silent.
lakan certainly is suspisouse but these events started back when she was at the rear palace before word of jinshi brining a corteson from the vertegris house, witch is when we start seeing lakan.

Jin Shi won't be able to openly kill the guard who attacked Mao Mao. It's an overkill to behead a guard over a servant girl. However, Jin Shi can punish him or demote him or get someone to be a constant pain to the guard.

Jinshi and Maomao shipping together? Jinshi as Crown Prince heir apparent: Although it is not an outrageous possibility, recall opening scene with Emperor and Jinshi. If the intended public view is Jinshi is the Emperor’s younger brother so I would presume his son (yet to be born by a consort) is the expected or even preferred heir. Also, Jinshi seems to be the unacknowledged son of the Emperor and a lower ranked consort, Ah-Duo who was “merely” the daughter (and childhood friend) of his nurse maid. I suspect neither Jinshi or his mother want him appointed as Emperor’s heir, ergo younger brother. It is hard to imagine the genius strategist, Lakan, did not know Jinshi’s true rank, especially with his involvement with the brothel and being well aware Maomao’s beloved adopted Dad who served in the Rear Palace while all this baby swapping occurred. Also, Jinshi suspected Lakan knew is true status not as brother but son. My guess is Lakan is surprised by the injury his flawed strategy caused Maomao, but perhaps more he saw the deep attachment Jinshi had for his daughter Maomao. Lakan does not strike as someone who understands people’s feelings or even empathizes with them. The exceptions were Maomao’s tragic mother and Maomao. He may just now realized that perhaps Maomao has feelings for Jinshi, even though she keeps denying them. Whether Jinshi’s diminished status due to his mothers status or Maomao’s raised status due to Lakan being her father allow them to get closer remains a big mystery. My bet the gap is still too wide for them. Perhaps if the Emperor had more male heirs, Jinshi might be permitted and Maomao allow their deeper relationship. I don’t mean sex, Jinshi clearly can have sex with Maomao, and her upbringing, status, and even her brothel upbringing would accept this, but that is not the relationship that either aspires towards
I think Lakan looks more shocked rather than simply surprised. The reason has to be Maomao. I don't think he looks at his daughter as some tool. He may really be fearing for her life there.

My Guess - Lakan 1) had nothing to do with it - why would an official want a noble dead and 2) maybe Jinshi being a noble was a well guarded secret, that maybe even Lakan didnt know wabout. 3) Yeah, he figured out something was going down, but was genuily surpried who the noble turned out to be. I think Lakan just knows a lot of the shady stuff thats happening, and he has his own goals - that obviously involve getting MaoMao. But I doubt he'd go as far as to risk himself trying to kill a member of the royal family for that goal. That tells me there might be some other higher mastermind that directly has a stake in wanting Jinshi dedo

Bro, after episode 18 I had to go read the manga, and bro... I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say THAT scene in 18 was different from the manga. Instead of showing pure hatred for the man, she instead was scared. I'll only add this, Maomao's mother could have aborted, yet she didn't. Can't wait to see people's reaction to (I'm guessing 21). Honestly, I only meant to read up to the anime, yet just like how I started the anime, first 13 episodes in one night, I read all 68 chapters in 3 days. And Jinshi has a impressive frog.

The anime is just being dramatic. In manga it is just Jinshi chibi form somewhat running carrying Maomao and his face is somewhat covered by the ritual hat. Probably not many people seeing his face or Maomao for that matter.
Reading the manga had me in tears about Lakan... and i wish they punished.. the guard who hit Maomao...this episode is at around chapter 31 onwards in the manga...
"medium ceremony" might be a mistranslation and the right meaning should be "mid-autumn ceremony", the reason for that last Lakan's face expression after few next episodes you will look back at it in a different light. But objectively speaking, that guard won't be punished for doing his job knowing what kind of country and its leaders are based on some slight hints here and there through out the series

With a sadistic grin on his face Lakan said he wanted to grape the mother, that he did a dirty trick and lowered her value, all while looking very evil with evil music playing in the background. Maomao's dream of her mother wanting to end her and her extreme hatred of Lakan, it's clearly implied that he graped the mom. Seen this in like 50+ other anime/manga and stories it's super common, but if it turns out to be wrong and a non-stop stream of false flags, that's fine too.
one thing - Even if Jinshi is the son of the emperor, he is an illegal AND not recognized, nobody knows he exists so he doesn't have any power to punish him Maomao would probably the one being punished because she discovered his identity I think...we'll see If you have nothing to do you should watch some historical K-Dramas, the shit that is going on there will make you wanna blow up something :D
Whatever it is Lakan's objective is to take back what is his and Jinshi is in the way. I think framing the court lady is just a side objective. We already seen how he demote a lady before. Lakan does not look happy because Jinshi is still a live and now he cannot get Maomao.
Definitely not anime of the year but it's a good anime and have some big names in the industry working on it. This episode was beautiful (haven't seen it yet I'm still yet to watch episode 14 due to my busy schedule since I moved to Japan) thanks for your reaction my brother
Apparently if he were to run in that sacred dress it would rip or sm, and he was carrying her infront of everyone. If he were to lose composure hell woulda broken loose (tho it alrdy has) And our Xiao Mao has fricking concussion so I dont think that'd help her even if it did speed up the process. But I get where ur coming from that guard has signed his death wish
People of high status cannot run or show their emotions in public. This is especially true if the person is so noble that he is seen off by a large number of people.
