Demonstrated in this video is the Animoog synthesizer, an iPad app from Moog Music (version 2.4.3), being played from a ROLI Seaboard GRAND. This has been made possible by recent updates to both instruments which includes compatibility with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression). MPE is a very recent extension of the MIDI spec which allows for independent expression gestures for each individual note, including polyphonic pitch bending and polyphonic pressure. These groundbreaking features have been present on the Animoog app since it's inception a couple of years ago, but until now could only be accomplished using the iPad touch screen itself (One could also play it from a standard MIDI keyboard, but without polyphonic pitch bend and pressure expressions). Now, with recent advancements in a new class of expressive electronic instruments, such as the Seaboard and the Linnstrument from Roger Linn Instruments, Animoog can join in on that exclusive club. All of the sounds I’m performing in this demo (other than the drums) are from the Animoog synth (connected to the Seaboard via an iConnectivity MIDI2+ interface) and sequenced in a computer DAW. All of these sounds are my own sound design from the “Song-Haven Animoog presets bank”, available at www.animoog.org. On the iPad touch screen, Animoog utilizes poly pressure expression using vertical finger movements. This is translated on the Seaboard using downward pressure gestures, which unfortunately is not easy to see, but can definitely be felt by the player!
