Good question! I would just change the action to Tag only so it doesn’t suspend any cards by accident. I would probably now in hindsight change the steps to “30 1440” as well. I must have forgot to do so here!

Hi austin my anki has the options of again, hard, good, and easy how do i make it only have 3 options
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 2 года назад
Hey Amanda! It is normal to have all 4 options. When you’re just beginning to learn a card there won’t be a “hard” option until the card matures to an interval of 3 days or so. This is when it’s considered to be “graduated”. You can continue studying as normal and just hit “good” Everytime you get it right and “again” when you get it wrong! Hard and Easy are typically options used sparingly so I wouldn’t even worry about them if they confuse you! Best of luck!

@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks for replying even on a video from 1 year ago :) I still have a cuople of questions but um it's all good if you're too busy 1. So I've been using Anki for the past hour making question cards and cloze deletions on a textbook, is this the right way to approach it? 2. Also so I'm still grasping the idea of New cards which moves into like the second area (review?) but ive realised when the cards show up again it shows up as Again - 10mins Hard - 1 day Good - 1 day Easy 5 days Should the 'Hard' and 'Good' button have the same day? 3. Do you have any videos or recommended videos with suspending cards (and then unsuspending it to study for specific subjects?)/filtered tags/custom study because I have only seen people talk about this and I have no clue what this means Again, I greatly appreciate the video and also you replying earlier :)
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 2 года назад
Of course! I always reply to comments whenever I can and I’m happy to help out :) 1) yes if you’re making your own cards for high school then you can absolutely make your own cloze deletions from a text book or whatever you need to study! 2) basically reviews are green or red cards that are due everyday based on the interval of the card and when the program says you need to see the flashcard on this day to retain it long term! Early on it might say both hard and good are the same but once you get the card correct again (press good) it will graduate to 3 days and will start spacing out further. After that the hard button will be different than good. I highly recommend beginners just use good and again when they first start off to keep things simple 3) you probably hear people say suspend and unsuspend because a lot of Anki users study from premade decks like I used a premade deck for medical school! For you, I would study the cards you make and when you want to stop studying some cards you can find it in browser and just toggle suspend to get them out of circulation if you find you no longer need them. Suspend is the hot key CTRL + J on windows! Best of luck!! Let me know if that makes sense
@bhye9576
@bhye9576 2 года назад
@@AustinNguyenMD omg yes thank you so much so that def makes sense on all 3 one last question: Since I'm making my own cards, I'm sorting them out by tags but I've realised that if I want to just go to the homepage and click decks I also have to create another subdeck and move my tags into the newly created sundeck. It's quite time consuming and I'm not sure how to go around this. If that's confusing- 1. I make my cards first and sort them out by tags i.e Physics::Chapter_1::1.1_Heat_and_Temperature::Heat but then I realise that in my regular decks I would have Chapter 1 > 1.1 Heat and Temperature And then I would have to make a new deck called "Heat" and move my tags there Should I be using tags + decks or one only? Because if I use tags only- how do I sort by how I want to learn the cards? Again, I greatly appreciate your time and help.
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 2 года назад
Hey, that’s a great question! I would actually just recommend you create sub decks and then make your cards underneath the main deck since you’re making your own cards. So basically you can have Physics be the main deck and then create decks underneath for every chapter and then just press the sub deck chapter and click “add” and the cards will automatically go into this new deck so it’s all organized and you can study by sub deck. In addition if you wanted to study all of physics at once just study from the main deck and all the sub decks would be included. Don’t forget to double check the settings and make sure it’s accurate for all your decks though!

Hey Austin! Do you know how people can modify pre-made decks? I learn better when I type out the answer vs just using basic flash cards. I’m using jacksparrow’s deck but it’s been hard to figure out how to change most of the cards to the format that works for me (I think it's some sort of cloze format, but with typing). Hi Austin, thank you for your explanation. I am still a little lost with the settings. I want to setup some beginner settings for short-term spaced repetition instead of long-term. So, instead of the 180 day interval I would like to set it to around 2,5/3 weeks, because I have a fixed learning interval without early study material. What would you recommend me to change for your settings? I hope you can help me out and thank you beforehand.
@AustinNguyenMD

Hey Osman! Thanks for reaching out and supporting the channel. I am always more than happy to answer any questions :) What I would recommend is setting your maximum interval to 21 days (3 weeks) instead of 180 days. After each exam if you don’t need the information longitudinally you can just suspend the cards using “Ctrl+J” which will highlight them yellow and pretty much put them on pause! Hope that helps! In my video about setting up the medical school Anki deck I talk about suspending cards too!

If I make the maximum cards 9999 won't that be too much let's say I have a sub deck and that deck contains 500 cards will that make me do all of them that day? Thanks
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 3 года назад
Great question! If all of the cards were unsuspended then yes it would, however you want to highlight all 500 cards and suspend them so that you can control how many you do each day! If you do this then you can unsuspend say 50 cards on one day and just do those 50. The reason I like to put the maximum cards to 9999 is because some days I’ll do 200 new cards and other days like 50. Regardless I don’t want to cap my maximum at 100 because then I won’t see the 200 I unlocked on the days I need to do a bit more! This is mostly because my medical school deck is about 32000 cards 😂 if you are working on a deck with just 500, you could set your daily maximum to 50 and you’ll see everything in 10 days if you keep up with Anki for 10 days in a row! Hope this is helpful & best of luck on your studying bro!!

In the reviews tab, for the maximum interval, what would be a good number to put for semester classes?
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 4 года назад
Daljit Saini Good question! I would still recommend no longer than 180 days as things start to get pretty fuzzy when the interval is longer than that! You can try starting at 180 days and then adjust from there. For example, if you start to notice you’re getting many flashcards wrong that are at 6 months (180 days) then I would lower my interval to 5 months (150 days) or 4 months (120 days) Hope that helps!

Hi Austin! I had a question. I am preparing for my MCAT for a January test (most likely the middle of January) and have a long way to go from my diagnostic score. I am using a pre-made deck the MileDown deck and wanted to ask which settings you recommend? I am new to Anki and have had some difficulty. The deck has about 2900 cards total. I was going to ask if I should keep my new cards at about 50 per day or switch it to 9999 like you did in your video? My reviews are at 9999. Also what should the maximum interval be set at? I have 32 days but I saw that you had 180. If I am taking my test in January I was unsure of what to do. And lastly, my leech threshold is set at 4 lapses, any recommendations on what to change it to? I found your videos to be very helpful. I would really appreciate your help.
@AustinNguyenMD
@AustinNguyenMD 4 года назад
Hey Milan! I’m happy to help answer your question. I would say that a deck of 2900 is certainly manageable for your exam in January! I would set your maximum interval to 90 days (about 3 months) just so that you will see every card at least 1 more time before January. I would leave the new cards to 9999 and just unsuspend as many cards as you would like to do for the day based on what you reviewed/learned and then do the cards. That’s the best way to learn them as when students cap there new cards to say 50 new per day like you stated, a lot of times they may have learned like 120 new cards worth of material that day but they’ll only learn the 50 and now when you do 50 more the next day it starts to get more fuzzy in your brain instead of just hammering all of the 120 relevant cards on the same day. Definitely keep reviews at 9999 as this is the key to success with Anki (Doing all reviews everyday!) Keep in mind that the algorithm is designed to correspond with the human memory forgetting curve and so if you keep doing the cards everyday and follow the intervals, the information will ideally be stored in your long term memory and you’ll know it well by the time of your MCAT! The lapses setting is not that important as I mention in my Anki settings video, I would just set the leech threshold to whatever you’re comfortable with. 4 is fine! I use 8 for mine but it’s important that you have the setting set at “Tag Only” since this will tag the cards you have gotten wrong X number of times (based on leech threshold) and this would indicate that maybe you may want to revisit a certain topic! i.e for me, any card I get wrong 8 times will be tagged so I know that I should review that topic since I keep getting is wrong! Hope this is helpful to you & I wish you the best on this MCAT in January-Go knock it out of the park!!
@docsheth
@docsheth 4 года назад
@@AustinNguyenMD Thank you so so much for all of your help! I have changed the settings to what you have suggested. Since I am using a pre-made deck, it's kind of hard to separate the cards from each subject for the topic i am covering..so to get around this--I am going into the subject for the mile down deck and doing custom study and choosing the tags (topics I am covering for each specific day)..so for example I would go under Chemistry--->do custom study---> and then choose the acid/bases cards and review those for the day and then add that "deck" to a new folder and repeat the following day's topic. I know this is inefficient but not sure how to get around this. Any ideas? Also, this may be a silly question but what do you mean by "unsuspend" a card? I apologize in advance if my questions are dumb--i'm just new to Anki and trying to figure all of this out.

@AustinNguyenMD 4 года назад
@@docsheth No such thing as a dumb question! Anki is hard to use, I will be the first to admit that. These are great questions and I hope my answers can help you as well as many others! I would highly recommend using the Miledown deck in this way: 1. Go to "Browse" and Suspend ALL of the cards in the deck. Basically you highlight the entire deck and if you are using windows the hotkey is "CTRL+J" or alternatively you can press Cards>Toggle Suspend. This will turn all of the cards yellow. 2. When you want to learn acid/base or whatever cards you would like to unsuspend/unlock you can use the tags on the left hand side of the browse menu and highlight the cards you would like to study and then unsuspend them (they will now be white and not yellow). You would follow this pattern everyday as you learn new topics until the entire deck is unsuspended and no cards are lefts as yellow (suspended). This allows for all your reviews to be under the same deck and keeps everything in order! Let me know if this is helpful and reach out with any questions!
