James welcomes his guests Anna Chlumksy and Charlie Day and the conversation quickly turns to Valentine's Day and then Charlie's recent birthday which involved a significant amount of sake. Then James gets a Chicago accent lesson from Anna Chlumsky before sharing with Charlie Day an online petition that wants Charlie to know his voice is "beautiful." Then Anna shares the peculiar way she spent her time as an only-child and Charlie recalls how susceptible he is to peer pressure, especially if it's to get a laugh.

We don’t… We make a whole sentence a word. We also conjugate a sentence differently than anywhere else. Instead of saying “I’m going to the mall,wanna go?” We say “wanna go to the mall with me?”… we always put the question before the action. While other states put the action before the question.

We don’t say it that way. The old school way is Shi-CAW-go. The Chicagoese accent is sadly fading away.
@BR-it2qe
@BR-it2qe 2 года назад
@@Ram44 not really honestly. It actualy complicated but look into the Northern Cities Vowel Shift. In a way, the older people speak without the shifted vowel system. So an older person will say Chic-AW-go (unchaged vowel) but will also say other words with the changed vowel. Their way of speaking hasnt consistenly shifted while for most younger people it has. So you could say, younger people have a thicker accent than the older ones. Unfortunately, proportionally they accent is dieing as more and more people speak with a standard American accent.

I'm a year younger than she is, and after My Girl 2, I was crazy about her. I thought she was really hot. Obviously, her performance in both of those movies was incredible, especially given she had almost no previous acting experience and she was expected to carry 2 movies and she did - very, very well. I couldn't figure out why she basically quit in the late 90s. She had so much potential and she wouldn't have had to go down the Charlize Theron route of having to be the actress who had to get naked and just be the almost forgettable eye candy in every movie until she proved she could act. Anna had already established that she could do a serious role and carry a movie - as a kid. She could have been in anything during that period and made it better. Obviously, this is my 41 year old self, and not the teenager I was, who obviously thought a little differently in terms of whether or not she should have been in a raunchy movie. I remember it was her, Christina Ricci and a few of those actresses from those early 90s TGIF movies.

@dr.valbell6427

I have lived here in Dallas for 9 years but lived my first 4 decades in good old ‘Sweet home Chicago’ and I always have people guessing I’m from Wisconsin or Minnesota. I speak way faster than all these folks down here so I have slowed down a lot. But as soon as I run into a fellow Chicagoan- even a stranger -- I Immediately and unconsciously go back to fast-talking and slip right back into my Chicago accent. FYI: I still love me some PAHHHP! Here they call it soda, soda pop or Coke (regardless of which pop they’re referring to). I’m a social scientist and I’m grad school I took a linguistics course for fun & many things I already knew were confirmed. The Chicago accent is much more nasal and we pronounce our vowels very openly as well as consonants; this is what makes people with the Chicago accent appear to over-enunciate all the words they speak. Plus Chicagoans pronounce word pairs such as the following 1) we say ‘leg’ like LEGG while people out West say ‘leg’ like LAYG. Same thing for the word ‘egg.’ Plus if your significant other says to you “Are you going to Jewel today?“ Then you would say, “Yeah, I’m goin’ over by DAIR (like it rhymes with Chair ). “Th” sound is often replaced with the “D” sound: “Take DIS to your Mahh’s house” where DIS replaces THIS, plus instead of saying ‘Ma’ we say it “MAHH” in a nasally voice so that the word perfectly rhymes with the word ‘Ja’ (yes in German’ or like the word ‘SPA.’ Accents aside to anyone native to Chicago there is one item of high cuisine that every true Chicagoan adores: The Chicago Style Hot Dog. Whether you want yours ‘dragged through the garden’ like I do or not, NO TRUE CHICAGOAN WILL EVER EAT A KOSHER BEEF CHICAGO DOG WITH G-D KETCHUP/-NEVER, EVER, EVER. As I often say, Ketchup on a hot dog is for New Yorkers & 9-year olds: two groups who don’t know any better. Putting ketchup on a hot dog is actual sacrilege and blasphemy!!

She sounds like your typical white american woman, from my pov. Chicago accents vary. Most are based off culture. Many whites here, more so the younger ones, are "newer" and tend to sound like whatever part of the world their parents immigrated from. The dialect just tends to have that typical "AMerican twist" that many Children of immigrants have. Most of the Hispanics sound like your typical Mexicans, yet the youth thats here (mainly the poor ones) tend to sound like a mixture of Mexican and Black; as they use many slang words that came from Black youth. The Mexicans here have sounded that way since forever. Many of the Black folks here, whose families have been here for well over 90 years, have a somewhat country accent (eg Derrick Rose). That accent stems from many Black families , that migrated from Southern States, a looooooonnnnngggg time ago.
