It broke my heart when Anna got arrested. She did nothing wrong, she was just a victim. That horrible Mr. Green was a mean man! Anna was and is innocent.
Beyond Mean - He was a freaking recidivistic inhuman and soulless monster and he got exactly what was coming to him . Anyone who brutally violates women/ children or men should be given the death sentence.
Bates's love for Anna was strong, without a doubt. He truly loved his wife. His heartbreak when he's held back and watching her get taken away, the tears in his eyes ... awesome acting.
And let's not forget Mary. The way she cares and loves Anna. Their friendship was really sweet and pure. Anna is the person Mary has loved most in her life along with Matthew and Sybil. Given that Anna was only child and didn't have a stable family, Mary is the first person who's been like family for her, mostly a surrogate sister
I just started watching it 3 week's ago and just ended the series last night. Rented the movie yes. I'm planning on rewatching it again. Best TV series ever!
Mary may have snob to everyone but when it came to Anna no matter what she was a true friend and defended, tried to do whatever she could to help Anna to the end true friendship
It was a neat story and you would think that Fellowes would have ended it with the release of Mr. Baites but he apparently ran out of steam for the pair and continued to reiterate on the same thing. Baites went to jail? Guess his wife needs to go too! Not to mention that historically cases like this would have taken a month, two tops to solve. Police back then did not generally take years to solve simple murder cases.
It was done well. I too wanted it to end but it just dragged on. But the fact that it was so dragged out and tedious just reflected how situations like this don’t truly leave victims to rest, it just follows and becomes even more unwelcome.
I reckon Mary couldn't care less if Edith was arrested but she couldn't care more about Anna. Just look at her face. She's not shy of acting out her title but in this case, I liked how she threw in her title at him. EDIT: I say good on Robert here being so certain 5:12 and for Mary outright saying "She's innocent"
I think she would care a little. Her sister would be a murderer. I don’t think she would think that her sister was guilty. Mary may be cruel to her sister but I don’t think she would stoop so low not to visit her at least once
Two siblings being at eachother's throat all the time is not synonym of them being sworn enemies. I really do not understand how people do not see the nuances in it, it's a family dynamic where things are complicated, they might not like each other but they do not 'hate' each other. Mary would certainly step up to save Edith if she were in the same situation, it's a question of principle and loyalty to one's family and friends before being it about liking them or not.
It is not too late to say that the writing reflects real life, which can be cruel and unforgiving; sometimes this is due to other people's wickedness, and sometimes it is due to cruel, inexplicable fate.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. The Green plotline was old the season before, now they drag it out further with this ridiculous attempt to get Anna in trouble. How come Mr. Murray or another lawyer were never present for any of these interviews? Any lawyer with half a brain would have shredded this pathetic "case" to bits before it ever got far enough to charge anyone. Just stupid and was one of the clear signs this show was running out of steam by late season 5.
I think the defense would have a field day: (Barrister in RP accent) "My lord, the Crown's case is that this woman, a woman of unquestioned virtue and good character, having been brutally assaulted, one of series of physically very similar women to be assaulted by the vicious Mr Green, lurked in waiting for the opportunity to physically overpower the larger and more powerful man, and threw him bodily into the street to be killed by a passing vehicle. The prosecution relies on the testimony of a witness who identifies Mrs Bates as definitely the culprit, despite her close resemblance to Mr Green's several other, very similar victims, despite the crowd present at that time at Piccadilly, and with only a brief instant of examination. This would seem to strait credibility."
Mr Bates would have loved to have got his hands on that vile Mr Green. Great acting. Lord Grantham knew what Bates would be capable of if he didn't hold him back.
they really dragged this particular storyline out and milked it for all they could get out of it. i am glad they gave Anna plenty of time to process her trauma and i thought her inner struggle with keeping a secret and with whether Bates had killed Green was well done. but when she got ARRESTED it felt like the plot had taken things too far, to an almost unbelievable level. everything else that happened i found to be very believable, but the arrest itself left me scratching my head.
You just KNOW that after the show ended and Anna was proven innocent Mary waited until that rude police detective had forgotten her before using her connections to ruin his life.
I don’t understand why Anna was arrested in the first place. Did I miss something? I mean surely she was with Lady Mary the whole time, couldn’t she provide an alibi???
Downton Abbey cops...yikes. First Mr then Mrs Bates. Is it incompetence or just downright stupidity? Briscoe and Logan would have solved both of those cases before lunch.
The death occurred in London, so it was the London cops running the investigation. D.A. cops were just there because the "suspect" lived in their jurisdiction.
This whole storyline was ridiculous. Plus, exactly NO house in the world would keep accused murderers on staff. They would have both been fired immediately.
This whole storyline just drove me nuts. I ended up not even liking Mr. Bates and Anna by the end. Anna suffered terribly at the hands of the bloody Mr. Green, but I felt that her personality changed after marrying Mr. Bates anyway. I feel like she lost her sweetness. And the whole story was just beating a dead horse. It was suffering after suffering. I preferred the storyline of Miss Baxter and Mr. Mosley.
I agree. It makes me sad to see all the stress and ordeals Anna was through, it really put a strain on her spirit, all the worries painted on her face, I never saw her smiling as she used to. Everyone is Downton went through character developements, usually positive ones, but with Anna I feel like she just lost her spark.
"I am not Miss. I am Lady Mary Crawley!" "I don't care if you're Queen of the Upper Nile." I like this guy. In a democracy everyone is equal before the law. This detective may have had it wrong with Anna. (I haven't seen the episode, so I can't say.) But he reacted in the right way when this aristocrat, however well meaning, was trying to pull her weight around as a Lady. Warping the law even by nice aristocrats is still warping of the law. And that is bad for democracy and for equality before the law since most people don't have nice aristocrats to warp the law for them. The correct procedure is to prove Anna's innocence in a court of law and not by the personal judgments of an Earl's daughter. We're not in the Middle Ages after all.
Certainly. I think the scene was just tough to watch for most of us, since Anna was one of the sweetest characters in the show, and actualy a victim in this situation.
It was an accident, and they were looking to frame someone for bloody murder. Anna was innocent, she was on Mary's service that day, Mary had every right to speak the way she spoke.
I detest smug, self - important police officers, who do not do thorough investigations, and are quick to arrest someone on another's word. This happens quite often today.
Anna was arrested because an unnamed witness identified her as present at the scene. I don't remember it being made clear whether anyone killed Mr. Green or whether his fall was an accident.
Look at ms. Baxter's face..she's the one who gave Thomas the info about something may have happened between Anna, Bates, and green.......not nice at all ms. Baxter!
Yeah... He barges into their home, in the middle of the night to arrest an innocent woman who's as close as family to them, on the theory that she might have killed her rapist, which is based on circumstantial evidence and he's acting like a complete pig to Ana, her husband, their friends and her employers. But he didn't defer to the toffs, so he's TRULY an admirable chap!! Grow up!
@@readsomebooks666 His reasons for being there have absolutely nothing to do with my point. A lot of people back then were in awe of the aristos. This man couldn't give a damn about who "Lady Mary Crawley" is. In a time when these people enjoyed a ridiculous amount of privilege, it's refreshing to see someone doesn't treat them like their shit doesn't stink. Anyone with any sense would have understood what I meant.
@@TheWorstWarlock She only said that because someone she really cared about was falsely accused and he was being disrespectful by not using titles. You can still be disrespectful by using titles. He was disrespectful because he used no titles nor did he respect any of them

The Custodian Helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position. Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb".
