George Jellinek, creator of WQXR’s wonderful “Vocal Scene” shocked everyone in an NYU course on Verdi back in the 70s. We students were all familiar with Callas, Sutherland, and Sills and were surprised to learn that Anna Moffo was his favorite Violeta. George Jellenek knew a thing or two about great singers and Verdi, and it hasn’t taken much time at all to appreciate that he was right. Anna Moffo was stupendous. An ideal Violeta. Listen to her rendition of Rachmaninov’s Vocalise for a transcendent experience.
Vincent this is sensational. Anna Moffo's voice and performance are just perfect. She was the greatest lyric-coloratura soprano of her generation, with a radiant voice of amazing agility. Thanks for the upload. I'm really surprised there are no other comments since you posted this back in 2013.
This is so wonderful... I have a soft spot for this opera ... it's the one my husband and myself went to see on our engagement night I would love to see the full film of this rendition
Meg Bailey: This is an excerpt from the opera that was originally shown on the Bell Telephone Hour. There are several films with at least one with Moffo, Stratas and several live performances of the opera (Sills, Crotubas.)
I will ETERANLLY ADORE both of these MAGNIFICENT opera singers. Also, can't help but mention it in a GOOD way....it's astounding what the RIGHT nose job can do for a person. This footage was shot before she had hers and the result was IMPECCABLE and looked perfectly natural!
Green Eyed Warlock: An opera singer that would risk altering their breathing and nasal passages after gaining success should think twice. Moffo was already an attractive woman. It was no long after that she started having vocal problems. Her MET career was over by 1972 when she was 40! Very sad indeed.
@@johnpickford4222 Understood and agreed! I’m a first tenor myself, and while not classically trained, I more than understand the mechanics of the entire body let alone your head that produce a good, if not magnificent voice. I treasure Moffo, because I consider her voice one of the most beautiful of all time. However, there’s no telling, by anyone, what really caused her early downfall however you could be right. I’m just so sorry that we only had her for such a short time, but that time was incredibly beautiful, talented, and heavenly for sure!!
Every note dear Anna sang portrayed a beautiful woman. If i were blindfolded I could still feel through the magnetism her sexuality. I think leading man, Gedda felt it as well. Absolutely convincing like few opera scenes before or since. Verdi must be rejoicing.

@@pasqualeperrone1560 I don't remember now - if it was her personality or her singing. He admired Callas as an artist, but not Tebaldi whom he said couldn't sing properly. And he was also very hostile towards Beverly Sills as a person as I recall it. I shall read it again btw, when I do - I let you know. 😉
Forse neppure Anna, avesse scritto delle memorie, avrebbe avuto, ed a ragione, nulla da dire su Gedda. Un cantante del tutto impersonale dalla voce acida.
@@pasqualeperrone1560He says that she from the beginning was sweet and unspoiled but further on, she became a selfish and superficial megastar wannabe, writing her off as a superficial dictator. He doesnt dislike her voice but is dedicating a whole page writing her off as an unpleasant personality.
I never cared for Nicolai Gedda, his pinched sound and wooden acting. Anna Moffo, on the other hand, is lovely here. She's in good voice and handles the coloratura beautifully.
DavidAsset78 I agree. Gedda’s voice has always struck me as overly bright, lacking in depth and color. He’s regarded by many as having had excellent technique, due in large to the fact that he sang for such a long time. However, I think excellent technique should result in a beautiful sound. I have always loved Anna Moffo. There’s a live Traviata from Rome, I believe, in which she is fantastic. One of my favorites.
