Renata Scotto (celebrating her 46th birthday) sings "Un bel di" in a concert then is serenaded by the audience with "Happy birthday to you". Beverly Sills is the hostess and James Levine conducts.
I was very fortunate to experience this fantastic singer as Gilda in Verona in 1966.. she sang terrificly alongside Cappuccilli and Aragall !! Rest in peace !! I will never forget you !!
My most favorite Butterfly ever! She's living it like no one else, what a precious document of how she must have sung it in full staged performances in the 60s and 70s!
Simply magical, not a well known as her "rival" Callas, sad to see she has departed this life! (but she lived a long life full of well deserved adoration) 😄
Amen😢
When I see her tiny frame vibrating full force to express what she needs to convey, I understand why she cut her career short in her last years. Who cares? Vissi d'arte. Better to sing like that for 20 years than hold back and be mediocre for 40 years, like many others. God bless you Renata. A magnificent artist and a very generous one. May you rest in peace.
Magnificent singer. Such Grace and elegance when she takes her bow. The greatest Butterfly . She left the world to soon. Renata and Beverly, two great divas on the same stage.
That’s true about all great artists. Their gifts were so great that, even if they lived until 150, it would be “too soon” when they eventually died. It’s a pity, but at least we have these memories preserved in digital form to always enjoy!!!
WOW!!! That was BRILLIANT! She was In=Character from the first note, and didn't hold anything back. God bless people of such talent that share it with the world. Same thing I am trying to do in my painting, teaching, and living.
She always wanted and did put all of her vocal skills in the service of bringing us into the soul of the characters she brought to us. Thank you Renata. Rest in peace and glory with our Lord.
A wonderful. beautiful performance by an artist with an incomparable voice and technique. Her taste in dress is also superb, beautiful and elegant, unlike the glitz that many sopranos seem to fall victim to. Bravissima!
It's incredible how important the director is for the orchestra, and how responsive the orchestra is to the direction! Just notice how, during the happy birthday song, the musicians waited for the director to kiss Renata, and then continued only when the director wanted, without losing their cohesion or ruining the melody.
Senza costumi o messinscena.
Absofreakinglutely the Best Version of Un bel di I have ever seen/heard!!!! I love how she understands and uses the text to color, and dynamically sculpt her phrases!!! SOOOO many singers ignore the nuances of the text. The lush, large quality of the bottom notes is *almost* orgasmic!!!! She's at the point where she's lost a bunch of weight, looks great, and it hasn't taken its toll on her voice!!!! Would that we could see her do 20 different roles at this point!!!! Her Lucia is Splendid, as is her Gioconda-and everything in-between before she took on too much vocal weight and career stress Her Mimi on the first Live Ftom the Met in Feb 1977 is a Hallmark of Beauty and Passion!!!! Her 2 arias are Extrafreakinordinary Outrageous !!! BRAVA!!!
She sang very well here. I heard her in Norma in Jones Hall many years ago, and her voice was scarcely audible, the vibrato had become tremolo. Butterfly suits her so much better. Requiescat in pace, bella donna!
¡Sublime!
I'm floored at how amazing she is at depicting the emotions and character. I heard of her because of Robin Follman, one of her very successful students who was world renowned and starred in over 50 operas herself. I can see her in Robin Follman's way of being completely immersedninnthe character.
Absolutely perfect!! Renata Scotto remains THE Butterfly for me! Her interpretation of this aria is without parallel. Most sopranos sing this as a dark, severely serious, almost dirge-like aria. But the text is anything but that - as Renata so spectacularly conveys. Butterfly is hopeful - she is happily anticipating Pinkerton's return. And she's even mad at Suzuki who is fearful. Butterfly is convinced with "sicura fede" that Pinkerton is coming back to her. She has the whole scene of how he will greet her set up in her mind. She's going to wait patiently, no matter how long it takes. In this vision of hers, for his return, she is exultant!! This makes the reality of what happens in the second act even more gripping, heart-breaking and tragic.
I love her dynamics- she floats pianissimos at the end of phrases with superlative breath control and then is fully engaged in the full voiced portions. Brilliant interpretation; not as good as Tebaldi, but still one of the best
