Anna O'Byrne suits Love Never Dies and Sierra Bogges suits The Phantom of the Opera. These are both different plays which we greatly admire and these are both different actors with different plays. They are both unique, beautiful and talented.
+NewElizaD In case you have not heard my fellow Anna fan. She's making in an album now as we speak. And she has confirmed that she will sing duets with Rebecca Caine and Ben Lewis. :)
I'll just get this out of the way. I adore Anna and Sierra equally. They couldn't be more different from each other in terms of acting style & vocal ability. But since this video is about Anna I'm going to compliment her. It puzzles me when people say Anna doesn't sound maternal. When I watched LND in the Cinema, I was stunned by her chemistry with little Jack. They were an ideal fit to play mother and son. Her voice is soothing & pure that it makes me feel as if I'm floating on a cloud. :)
I am a fan of both Sierra and Anna. However, putting the role of Christine in the context of Love Never Dies - I can say that Anna captured the maturity that Christine should have 10 years after the tragic love affair. Sierra is and will always be a great Christine but the intensity of her characterization will always depict Christine from POTO. :) but... I think they showed two distinct interpretation of Christine, with that I give my praise to these amazing stars.
+Febs Ramos *Exactly* what I've been saying too :) Anna is just *amazing* for LND. I found a video of her singing in the theatre version of POTO - it just doesn't quite have that innocence that Christine has in POTO. Quite interesting that it does go both ways. The much-hated movie version of POTO has Christine even more innocent sounding - which actually fits, given that she's meant to be about 17... (even though people hate on her for that... How many 17yo's have you met that sang like they've been practising for 25 years?
+Febs Ramos To me, your point is captured precisely in the lines "How dare you come and claim me now/invade my life...". If you listen to the two singers in contrast, Sierra sings it with sort of a sad, innocent tone, while Anna goes the more angry and aggressive route. To me, there's nothing that displays her anger after those 10 long years than those lines.
Febs Ramos I completely agree with you. Especially on Emmy Rossum. You're absolutely right! Christine is supposed to be very innocent in PTO and I think Emmy did a very good job.
Anna is so good at a maturer, and maternal Christine, and she is the right operatic sound especially for these songs, and she is very good at acting the stress of having a drunk for a husband, whereas Sierra was very fresh, young and innocent, and her acting of discovering all the Phantoms wonderful music is outstanding, her voice very young, and pure. The two people couldn't be more ideally suited to their parts.
Anna can play both a young Christine and older Christine. Her performance in POTO was sublime! She's already become one of my all-time favorite actresses in this iconic role. :)
I don't see Sierra anywhere in the title or description of the video yet there are still people comparing her to Anna. For once, can everyone just appreciate who's actually featured in the video?
as a Sierra Boggess fan, she's good but I agree that Anna has a more maternal voice rather than Sierra's which is young (better for Christine in Phantom) :)
Anna acts very different when she act the younger, innocent one Christine, and Christine is a lyric soprano which Sierra wasn’t. I think it get harder for me to believe Sierra was Christine. As a girl whose world is narrow. Sierra’s voice was too breathy, sounds like she had lots of emotion and was eager to earn lots of things, but this was not Christine. Most of time the younger Christine let others to decide her destiny.
I love Anna's voice- it's just so beautiful. I've seen many Christines over the years and while they've all been good she's the first that made go 'Wow'
Totally agree. Sierra's perfect for younger Christine and Anna's perfect for older, motherly Christine. They're both amazing - I so wish I could see them perform this role but I'm in the U.S. :( The show needs to come here!
Sierra is a Lyric Coloratura. Anna is a Dramatic Coloratura. The charatcer of Christine has been played by many of these (in the original POTO) in the past as well as Light Lyrics. There is no accuracy for Christine to be played by one type of soprano. The Phantom has also had it's share of being played by Baritones as well as Tenors.
@wordluer135 The gustave in this video is kurtis papadinis. The one who will be playing gustave on the dvd is jack lyall, the one of the highlights video
I see your point, for the music, a musical theatre voice is probably more suited, but as Christine is an operatic singer, I think she need a classical voice. Sierra and Anna highlight different aspects of the production which is why I love listening to both of them. As a classical singer, I particularly look up to Anna, but not so much for this but her work in other Operas. I saw her in Threepenny 2 years ago and found it a much stronger role for her, not just as a singer but an actor as well :)
@BeccaFulloftin97 Sierra Boggess was Christine first in Las Vegas, then in Love Never Dies in London, and then in the Phantom 25th anniversary performance at the Royal Albert Hall. I think both she and Anna are very talented Christines.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is a musical on Broadway right now. Laura Osnes is playing the title character. Lesley Ann Warren played CInderella in a television special in of the musicla back in 1965. Lelsy played her with a classical soprano voice. Laura is a contemporary belter.
People have the right to their opinion on who is their favorite performer. I respect that. However, when you say information that is incorrect, I get irritated. Anna's vocal range is just as big (if not bigger) the Sierra's. She can hit a F. She is an authentic opera singer as well as on who is trained in musical theatre. Sierra (while a wonderful vocalist) is not trained operatically.
Theres no way to compare both performances Anna is a full soprano sierra is mezzo it will never be the same but everybody is different ans enjoy diferent I love Anna and prefer her voice much mote than sierra but other people may enjoy more a voice like sierras
Not trying to be mean or cause trouble. I respect that you enjoy Sierra more. To each to their own. But I don't undertsand what you mean. Anna is actually singing at a very light tone for someone who was classically trained. Are you refferring to the fact that you like Sierra because she's a Lyric Coloratura and Anna is a Dramatic Coloratura?
Beautiful voice! I think I prefer her to the singer in the London production, who was too quiet for me. Though this girl seems a little young for the role. But still...
Agree with TheBelcantolover that Anna has a lovely operatic voice and will be even better when she matures a little further into her career, Sierra is sensational of course with a good stage presence and a more sensual quality which fits well with the Christine character. But isn't it wonderful to be able to listen to both of them.
Sierra and Anna are both amazing. Personally, I think that Anna's voice is much more suited to the older and more mature Christine in Love Never Dies, as her voice has a real operatic quality that Sierra's voice somewhat lacks. She is also much more convincing as a mother. However, Sierra has a pure, almost younger voice that suits Christine in the original Phantom. She also seems to have a raw emotional quality that I adore.
I love both Sierra and Anna. Anna's voice is fitting much more for Christine in LND rather than in POTO and Sierra's voice is much more fitting for Christine in POTO. Soo...yeah lolz
Yes, it is true. I, among many others, have read the book and between Sierra and Anna, Anna is the only one who remotely can be considered to be Christine. Sierra has a good voice, but it is neither original nor interesting. But then, it would take a real prima donna to be able to really fill the shoes of the character Christine Daaé.
they are both beautiful but personally i prefer sierra bc anna's is very operatic (beautiful still) but very operatic which personally isnt my taste whereas Sierra is more like just singing if that makes sense lol
I think Sierra has a very FULL and RICH voice, which I prefer. But Anna has an Operatic voice and it fits the role, but Sierra just LOOKS the role... And in my opinion, is far better... At least for POTO.
