Why do people call famous actors “underrated”? She is a working actor which puts her in top 1% of actors. How is this underrated? Any famous actor you see is at the top of the game
I have loved this movie for many years. Thank you so much for this. My family is from West Virginia. In 1978, my mother died in New York. This reminds me of my mother ...
What a brilliant actress. That monologue is incredible and so hard to do and in one take. Anne Bancroft was one of the best and this movie is so underrated. It was directed by Sydney Lumet an incredible director himself....we done have actors an directors like this anymore
She always been great one on one with another actor. Examples: Her and Patty Duke, Bill Pullman in Malice, Sissy Speack 'Night Mother, Dustin Hoffman , The Graduate, Shirley McClaine The Turning Point, her scenes with Jane Fonda and Meg Tilly in in Agnes of God , Sidney Portier, (Who she incidentally presented him with his Oscar) in A Slender Tread (even though it was over the phone) a master of dialog/monolog (check out Garbo Speaks) Theater work makes you a better actor. And she's also damn attractive. As you can see I'm a big fan of Mrs. Brooks; a truly gifted actress. One of the all time greatest. R.I.P, Anne.
@Jardinier2023. He did the same with Bergman in MOTOE & won her the Oscar for 1 of the briefest roles ever nominated. Lumet began as child actor in theatre & then directed during Golden Age of Television, leading to Twelve Angry Men. Years later he did MUCH different story about self-appointed jury that also became a classic, all-star Murder On the Orient Express. Ingrid Bergman was offered role of Russian Princess Dragomiroff, she demurred for far less showy role of Swedish missionary. As he would with Bancroft, he shot her scene in close-up, no cuts, let his 🌟 star run with it. When he said cut, she stood & gave him a thank-you kiss. When Bergman won the Oscar she graciously & simply stated in her acceptance speech that it was fellow nominee Valentina Cortese who deserved the win. Also very funny story about her & Lauren Bacall, for another time.
What a touching scene! Anne Bancroft was great. Loved her in this movie and Fatso too. What an actress! It's been many years since I saw Garbo Talks. Thanks for posting this of the wonderful Anne Bancroft.
This speech and in fact the whole movie was written by the wonderful Larry Grusin. People tend to think that the actors make up their lines as they go along because they're so good at what they do, but please lets remember the writers! Without the writers there are no words...
True, but Ebert gave this 1 🌟 & complained about the script, so it works both ways. MANY movies written on the fly or improvised & often the better for it, Altman encouraged his large ensemble casts to improvise. Apparently Bancroft couldn't do that (despite being married to Mel Brooks), but Ebert also disliked her character, he wanted Garbo to actually TALK!
Ebert gave this one star. I just saw it again and, while not great, is well done for what it is. It's not for everyone, but I'd assume a film buff would especially appreciate it....not all of us apparently. I don't know what Roger expected, a great revelation where Garbo talks for the whole film telling her life story. He didn't get the intentional irony of the title apparently. Anyway I think Ron Silver was great and Ann Bancroft believable in a character that worked! The ending I felt was an emotional climax that succeeded.
Thank you for uploading this video clip. I adored Anne Bancroft and this wonderful movie. I too am a fan of the Great Greta Garbo. What a remarkable and elegant lady.
One shot. Slow dolly in. Anne Bancroft doesn’t miss a beat. Thanks for posting. This doesn’t run on tv that often anymore. And if it’s on one of the nostalgia broadcast channels it’s all hacked up.
Anne Bancroft(RIP) will always be Mrs. Robinson to me. Loved her in everything she has appeared in, from this to 84 Charing Cross Road and yes The Graduate! With a few great comic sidetracks like To be or Not to be! This scene is Bancroft as her finest.
The famous Betty Comden from the team of Comden and Green is rumored to be playing Garbo in this scene. I think the rumor is true. I remember when it came out and I saw it in the theater and a special aura was felt because no one knew if it was Greta .
R Gallagher And I see that's why she was (Comden) uncredited. Kind of would've taken away the magic and suspense the audience was feeling on knowing if it was her or not.
Thank you for posting this. I'm teaching a class called Movie-Going as Memoir and am showing this scene. Do you live in Ptown, Chris? I lived there for several years over 10 years ago.
Garbo Talks was so boring unless Anne was in a scene. This scene and the one where she calls out the hard hats cat calling women are my favorite scenes
She lived in NYC along with MGM studio cohorts Crawford & Loy & NEVER communicated with them, even after Crawford narrated television doc. on former co-🌟
It’s not Garbo, it’s Betty Comden, Broadway writer and lyricist. Comden was a legend herself, but not at the level of Garbo. Unfortunately, Garbo herself wouldn’t have dreamt of appearing in a movie cameo.
@@wotan10950 Oh, thank you for telling me. I just remember my older sister really like Garbo but I didn't know anything about her other than that she went silent which I always found to be intriguing. I expect she came off as an empath so it's interesting that this lady isn't her after all because I wasn't getting that vibe from her.
Yes, that explains her Oscar, half century career & dozens of credits & other award noms. Mrs. Robinson alone is an icon & she played it so cool in that 1 she was 🔥.
