If you think this scene was good you should see her in The Miracle Worker. Best Actress Oscar winner and hands down the most worthy performance ever to win that award!!
The plot turns here, and what a scene to mark the turn! Perfect. I've seen this scene many times since, but nothing can bring back the satisfaction of seeing it for the first time within the movie.
I watched this when I was a teenager and even then I thought wow she just stole the whole movie, made every actor in it look amateurish and she's only in it for this scene. a true professional , sorely missed
Vikz I remember watching this scene when I was 13 and I told myself someday when I was an adult I was going to have a glass of single malt scotch just because she made it look so good. 🤣😂🤣😂
There should’ve been a crash of lightning in the background when she said “welcome to the game“, Best line of the whole movie. Chills and goosebumps moment.
I agree!!! I was creeped out and scared when she did that 😅. I would've loved to see her add some horror movies in her repertoire because after she said "welcome to the game," I was thinking how creepy she was, lol
I wish Anne Brancroft was in more movies over the years. I always loved her in "To Be or Not To Be" with her husband, Mel Brooks. And of course, The Graduate, without a doubt.
I loved those lines: "You're drunk." "Oh yeah? Well you're stupid.....see I can say that to you now that you're my son-in-law." Absolute gold! And, "HOW COME I HAVE THE JACK OF CLUBS IN MY FUCKING POCKET??!!"
This was probably the most important scene in the whole movie. It reveals not just the truth about who Tracy really was. But exactly how her psychopathology began to emerge. It wasn’t just her father who taught Tracy how to be a con artist. It was also the mother…too drunk too self absorbed to intervene. This tells me Tracy was a sociopath not a psychopath. Psychopaths are born. Sociopaths are made.
The timing in this scene is about as perfect as can be. After all these years, I still think about how Bancroft stole this movie with her brief appearance.
Single Malt Scotch. That is so classy, mister. Have I been talking to my shadow! Anne Bancroft should have won a Supporting Actress Oscar for this movie.
One of the best scenes/cameos/performances on film- of all time! "Nobody wants Nothing." F'n Awesome. You're drunk. Well, you're stupid. I could say that to you because you're my son in law. Andy, is it Andy? I got it. Pick a card. Then why the F' do I have the J of clubs in my pocket! I could see this scene over and over, 1M X. F'n Awesome.
The cameos in this film are very well placed, but watching the film the first time, for an early 90s film, pay close attention to the twists, or you may get confused. I was too young for this in my early teens, but a few years ago, I saw it through, and despite some weird content, I enjoyed it. What can I say, I like movies and tv shows that make viewers think?
For me, I felt like she was almost talking in code. It impressed a lot of people, but I still can't figure out what she was trying to say until Andy said it. She definitely doesn't spell anything out for you (not that I usually need that, but in this scene, it would have helped lol)
@@MrCraigblaze I think for myself, too, MrCraig. If yoiu're trying to imply I don't, I really resent the implication! I'm only saying I found the scene really confusing and hard to figure out. If you understood what she was saying through the whole scene, good for you . I didn't and I doubt I'm the only one who felt that way.
ANNE BANCROFT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN AWARD FOR THIS SCENE..SHE KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK...SHE IS, ALONG WITH SIGOURNEY WEAVER AND MERYL STREEP OUR FINEST ACTORS .. JUST AMAZING WOMEN. I COULD WATCH THIS SCENE OVER AND OVER.
This was the highlight of the movie. Oh Yeah? Well how come I have the Jack of Clubs in my fucking pocket!!!! The way she transversed through the emotions from remembrance, disappointment, hurt, and resentment to the burst of anger that this dude couldn't understand what she was saying then to the sly satisfaction that he finally got it and he was gonna sabotage the plans at her behest is a Master Class of Acting. She will always be missed.... what a scene.
Thanks for posting this. Almost every time i say the word 'card', I say it with a Bostonian accent... explaining this to my daughter meant downloading the film just to show her this scene. If anyone else asks, I can send them this link. =D
If there was a 90s Spiderman film Anne Bancroft could of played Aunt May, River Phoenix could play Peter Parker/Spiderman, Marlon Brando could play Uncle Ben, Sam Elliot could play J. Jonah Jameson, Brad Dourif could play Norman Osborne/Green Goblin, Paul Walker could play Harry Osborne, Christy Swanson could play Mary-Jane, Josh Brolin could play Flash Thompson and Tim Curry could play Dr Connors/Lizard.
SCENA MEMORABILE E LEGGENDARIA DI ANNE BANCROFT DA OSCAR CHE RIEVOCA LE ATMOSFERE DEI FILM THRILLER GIALLI E NOIR DI HICHCOCK ANNI 40 E 50 FILM INTROVABILE SU DVD.
Wow! Thanks for posting this. I've just finished reading Rob Lowe"s "Stories I Only Tell My Friends", and he mentioned the movie Malice - went to imdb and read someone's comment on Anne Bancroft's performance - so here I am to check it out. I really want to watch this movie again (seen it just once, years ago). Now, who wrote this, again....?
ok, she doesn't look so hot here but it's the character and the makeup. she looks like that curly-haired poodle-haired lawyer Lesley whoever. Anne's acting here is outstanding. She's gooooood.
Taking Tracy's money from under the mattress...very similar story to a woman I dated for 6 years -her father stole money from dresser drawer...gf left rather imperfect me...! :D explains a lot!
I see a lot of comments here where people are extremely impressed with Anne's character. I guess this scene goes way over my head because I've played this scene three times now and still don't understand how Andy figured out Anne was hinting that Tracy set Andy up.
Besides the stories she told about Tracy, it was when she said "Why do you give a Frenchman's fuck who she sleeps with? Get into the game, go for the 20 million yourself!".
Did you see the movie? Lynn I can't understand why you don't get this. It's totally obvious. Anne gave "Andy" a clear view of who Tracy was. She (Tracy) had bamboozled him (Andy) from day one.
@@Mftjan2000 No, it wasn't obvious to me. She is NOT easy to talk to in this scene. I understand she is a bitter angry woman because of what happened to her.. I guess her husband left her or turned out to be a con-artist and her daughter left and never sent her any money. But I did understand with the other message you wrote. But it does not mean I am stupid for not understanding what she was saying in this scene, Mftjan. Some people just don't understand some scenes. I'm one of them and that's OK.
Unlike Ms. Bancroft's character, I actually prefer 100-proof Schnapps that hits me like a lightening bolt. But I do agree that blended whiskey is still crap, nonetheless.
She’s supposed to be an alcoholic whose husband ran out on her and she’s lived a rough life. She looks perfect for the part. This is one of the best scenes in any movie….she was great.
Great acting but what is the point of the card trick? Or is there not one? Help me understand. It's impressive writing by Sorkin and Scott Frank but are they just giving you a distraction? Is it to show Andy how easy it is to take advantage of him?
It was to show him that they were a family of con artists. She was pounding down that whiskey (single malt, not that blended shit...) and was able to pull off the card trick effortlessly.
I think Aaron sorkin only wrote some of the liberal stuff like the abortion doctor and the god complex speech and Scott Frank wrote the rest of the script being like a detective movie like Dead again 2 years before.
Flint Ironstag Yep, basically letting him know that he got played. I loved the way she was cutting the deck. Although, you can clearly see her palm the card and put it in her pocket.
TheMohawk she really did nail the Boston accent. Never heard an actor nail it like she did. BeBe did a terrible accent in this movie. Most actors butcher that accent to pieces and do not sound authentic at all.
