Carthy and Swarbrick, The Watersons, The Young Tradition and this crystal clear voice were my introductions to traditional music nearly 6 0 years ago..So simple but so beautiful.
This one here by Anne drives home the perspective for me why she was the undisputed leader of the English folk scene of the early 1960's period. This is as good as it gets !!! Thank you !
She was a free spirit with such a purity to her voice. I highly recommend Richard Thompson's "Beeswing" as she was the inspiration. It's beautiful as well.
She is N° 1 of the Isles: a still living and singing legend, a true bard; extension of the ancient European ( British, Celtic) Tradition.....because this way of singing, although officialy belonging to English Folk Music, belongs, more widely speaking - to ancient Celtic vocal technique and style rich in ornamentations typical for Celtic Culture in general (not "only" Irish, Scotish, Cornish, Wellsh, Britton, ect, but also English) *which, when we speak about pure Folklore, represent the Celtic origines of the Brittish, and even English ethnomusicoligical heritage, at least 80% of it: the ancient Celtic origin in its deeper layers). Anne Brigs is a Keeper of the Intengible Cultural Heritage of Great Britain, but also more widely - the ancient Indoeuropean Vocal Folk Music; generally speaking; this particular style is very old and it could be compared with some old Balkan and Transilvanian singing as well as the Indian Ragas....melodies, ornamentations, vocal technique, themes. Anne Briggs is unjus6ly forgotten a d not prized jew3l of Albion. We do not see her on TV, and very rarely on Radio, (except for some specials on BBC programes, BBC 4 f4om before), but Wider audience in GB does not know her; what a shame. This is a matter concerning Ministry of Culture of Great Britain....and European Culture in general.
