In honor of Women’s History Month, the women of the Blue Boar Tavern host Ladies' Night to toast two women who influenced Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, playing important roles in the development of the works of “William Shakespeare.” Join Bonner Cutting, Dorothea Dickerman, Phoebe Nir, and bartender Jonathan Dixon for an exploration of the lives of Anne Vavasour (c. 1560 - c. 1650) and Elizabeth Trentham (1562 - 1612).
Anne Vavasour, lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth I, was just 18 when she got involved with the older and married Edward de Vere. They had a child together, resulting in mother, father, and son being imprisoned in the Tower of London. Her wit and charm may have inspired Shakespeare's most sparkling heroines.
Elizabeth Trentham married the widowed de Vere in 1591, becoming Countess of Oxford and birthing a male heir. She brought business savvy and stability to Oxford's life, contriving to untangle their estate from the grip of the powerful Cecils and allowing the poet to spend his final years revising and refining the Shakespeare works.
The Tavern will hold more Ladies' Nights to raise a glass to other remarkable historical women of the time.
