ANNIE ANNIE ANNIE You put your STAMP on this - that little bit of ANNIE LENNOX ensemble and quality will always be yours… BABY BABY BABY!! Your River IS DEEP and MOUNTAIN HIGH!! ALWAYS!!!
It is amazing that with SOME songs it doesn't matter who the singer, or how much better they may or may not be, but nothing beats the original - and this is one of those songs. The same can be said of Annie's song Why - no one will do it better than she.
well, I came into this with the intention of ..well i really didn't know what to expect cause after all she is annie lennox but hey she showed me that there ias a reason that she is famous!!!It is what it is. When you got it you just got it. This was spectacular! This was damn good..this shit was fuckin fantastic. it is a hard song to sing. alot of soul artists would have had trouble keeping the spirit up because the song calls for strong highs and thats what we the listeners are waiting for.
Jean Terrell and the Supremes also did this in 1970 with the 4 Tops. They did a great job released after Stoned Love made it to #11 ( believe) This is a great version too, I love Annie's voice
Windofthespirit wrote: "This suits me alot better than Celine's version. Her voice isn't rough enough. I mean granted, it's she's NOT Tina... she set the bar WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY HIGH.... but Annie did a WONDERFUL job doing this!!!!!" exactly my thoughts. Listen to "Cold" by Annie Lennox, now thats her "River High" to me. It's very moving.
Of course, nobody does this song like Tina; still, I like this version. In contrast to Celine Dion's, this is tasteful and honest. And is that an accordion playing in the background? Seems slightly ridiculous, but it fits in perfectly!
@53Topanga Silly. Ike and Tina via Phil Spector own this song. Darlene Love's version is good, but it's simply not better than Tina and it's ridiculous to suggest anything of the kind. Lennox does a very respectable job, doesn't try to emulate anyone else.
@jasrogg I think you know that Tina's suicide attempt was in no way connected to the failure of River Deep. for you to make that connection is quite silly. In fact, it was River Deep that made Ike and Tina crossover into Europe thus making their success more broad.
It is amazing how fantastic British women have been at soul - from Dusty, Annie, through to Duffy and Adele (far better than white US performers - AND that is not meant in a racist manner - just observation). That observed nothing better than the originals- call me old fashioned!
I don't think this is a song for Annie Lennox' voice................Tina Turner was good, BUT Darlene Love owns this song, and no one does it better than Darlene!!
@iowa61 The correct answer is no one. No one does it better Darlene Love. (I wistfully wonder how Dusty Springfield or Janis Joplin would have done though).
Thank you for posting... She Sings this song, it has to be felt in the heart for the performance to work. This is not racist comment but Annie's version is the best white version I have heard. Celine Dion sounds like a cat with it's tail in a blender compared to Annie....
What happened at 2:44 - it's like somebody put fire ants in the piano player's pants and he just starts playing faster faster faster! kinda spoiled it a bit for me. I think all the Tina comparisons are quite unfair - how can anyone's version compare to that? Just listen to this on its own terms.
ok, no one is better than tina, but I like this version, I think mainly because of the humbleness with which she performs - to serve the song, non to do a show. and here we come to what I hate most about the dion's version - all the cheap show and dance without really living the song.
This suits me alot better than Celine's version. Her voice isn't rough enough. I mean granted, it's she's NOT Tina... she set the bar WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY HIGH.... but Annie did a WONDERFUL job doing this!!!!!
Yeah, nobody can sing it like Tina Turner, but Annie did a great job... certainly it's one of the most wonderful covers of River Deep...much better than Celine ones.
