Whoops, Georgia was not meant to be highlighted on the intro map! What happened was I edited Toccoa (least used in Georgia) after editing this one and changed the map for it, which is just one file; but then I had to come back and reupload this one with the credits, and my editing software had changed the map to the "updated" one with Georgia highlighted instead of Alabama! Sorry for the error, everyone.
Okay, I have the most awesome idea for the "Summer of 2024" - : pick a city (centrally located like Oklahoma City or some other city) and see how many transit fans will meet you there ❓ No cars allowed. 🥎⚽ Imagine 8, 25, or 45 transit🚃🚋🚎🚞🚊🚉 nerds meeting at a buffet🥡 all wearing plaid shirts and Amtrak hats 🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🤸🏃🚶🧍🧎👶👶👶👶🍼🍼🍼🍼
And I love Nathan for that! Like I get not liking bugs, but not all bugs are bad! Beetles for example are both decomposers and help reduce pest populations. And while roaches are often thought of being all pests, only 30 species of the 4,500 roach species out there are pests!
Aside from the Army Depot, there is no large employer in Anniston, so things are pretty depressing after Ft McClellan closed. I dont think theres much demand from going anywhere not in the North East to the North East.
@@MilesinTransitI was just there for the first time and it was amazing but as someone said to me there “It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get to N’awlins. It’s always there, like a cockroach. It can’t be killed and it never evolves”
@@OkieDokieSmokie7+ billion? Serfdom was an institution specific to Europe, there weren’t 7 billion people alive by the time it was fully abolished, and many people currently live under similar or worse living conditions.
Kudos to the Atlanta Greyhound station for going above and beyond and offering passengers a spa treatment as they wait 😂. And what great logic, having the restaurant open at 4 in the morning, but not when the station is the busiest in the middle of the day...makes perfect sense to me. But hey, great to see Nathan again! Gotta say, this was a casual yet sophisticated review! Besides Anniston's civil rights history, Anniston was an industrial place rich in mineral resources, but said resources weren't exploited until the Civil War. The Confederacy operated an iron furnace near downtown until it was destroyed by raiding Union cavalry in early 1865. Later, cast iron for sewer systems became the focus of Anniston's industrial output. During WWI, the US Army established a training camp at Fort McClellan adjacent to Anniston. On the other side of town, the Anniston Army Depot opened during World War II as a major weapons storage and maintenance site, and to this day, the facility is still used for the repair and production of ground combat vehicles, repair, restore, and upgrade infantry weapons, and was once used until 2011 for the storage of chemical weapons.
I live right next to Anniston Al. I have no idea why this is recommended to me but its cool to finally watch a video where i am completely familiar with the area and have a family member working at Effina's
It WAS originally built with a spiral staircase, but that is no longer the case. So the chair is still the world's largest office chair, but not the world's largest chair in general. The story goes that Leonard "Sonny" Miller, the owner of Miller's Office Supply, sought to build the chair to attract attention to his furniture business. In 1982, Guinness World Records recognized it as the World's Largest Chair, but didn't recognize it as the World's Largest Office Chair. The title of World's Largest Chair was passed on in 1995 to a seven-story one in Italy, until its current record holder since 2009 in Austria, which is over 98 feet tall. The chair in Alabama is just over 33 feet tall and was made with 10 tons of steel and 15 tons of cement. Amtrak heritage unit AND the BNSF Office Car Special? Now this review was a treat! Not only do I like the "This train is bound for" part of the MARTA announcements, but also the fact that they're bilingual. I think it says a lot that MARTA has bilingual announcements on the train, but the Latino-majority Miami doesn't on their Metrorail. I appreciate MARTA for going the extra mile! Though of course, it's not Singapore's MRT and their different languages!
One thing I love about these videos is when you ride the bus systems in smaller cities/towns and they are perfectly fine and have people on them. I feel like many Americans, unless you live in a handful of cities (Bos/NYC/DC/SF/Chi?) will loudly and proudly proclaim "We're a car city, nobody rides the bus here". But then when you actually go to their location and ride the bus and it's just a regular bus with no issues whatsoever! Ride the bus, people! :D
👍 Awesome least-used Amtrak station report, including local transit and Greyhound. I rode through here on the Crescent but learned a lot more about the Anniston area from your video. Looking forward to least-used stations in FL and MO.
I have taken the Crescent many times, including when it was still on Southern Railways! I went to college in NYC, and my parents took me to Clemson, SC to get the train there--unless we felt like a little excursion, then they would take me to Toccoa instead to catch it. So--I am REALLY looking forward to your Toccoa video! I am actually impressed that the Anniston area had those little mini-buses and they had passengers (not just you two). The only thing I remember in Toccoa is a beautiful waterfall.
It's always great to get a Nathan/Miles station review but this one is an instant classic. "The access is not accessible? Is that what you're saying, Miles?"
I am from Anniston and I can tell you, it almost looks the same as it did when I was a child nearly 40 years ago. I know it doesn't look like much but it was a wonderful place to grow up.
The Los Angeles has the largest chair just 7 feet taller in the L.A. Mart's parking lot. The longest light rail route as of March 16, 2023 passes by the chair. It 48.3 miles long and still expanding.
It's easy to shit on Greyhound when you realize how painful regional travel is once Greyhound decides to shut down in your country. RIP Greyhound Canada.
Yes!!! I've been waiting for another least used Amtrak station video. Such a good series since I get to see parts of the U.S. I would never have any reason to go to. On another topic it's crazy to me how many somewhat small american towns have public transport, even if the systems are tiny and limited. I would've never thought Anniston would have any public transport, especially since it's not even a college town. A lot like Gastonia in that sense. I can't wait to see the next least used amtrak station video and see the local transit that comes with it.
The BNSF officer train is just executives and their family on board. Kinda surprised to see the back window all closed up which is rare on the final car
can't wait until you get to the least used station in Florida - it's the closest stop to my parents' house and so wretched that we opted to just drive the extra hour and get on at Sebring instead
Did you try the door to the station? Many of the Crescent route stations operate on time controlled magnetic locks which may not match the posted time after the recent schedule change.
@@MilesinTransit The time locks are good for serving each departure, but they will absolutely lock your bags in the station if the train is sufficiently late.
If I remember correctly the Aniston station was built for the nearby Army base, which the architecture kind of evokes. I was looking at taking the train there for work but ended up not going on the trip.
Y’all walked from Oxford to Anniston? Gotta kill time somehow I guess. Next time you’re in Anniston, hit up the Berman Musuem and eat at The Peerless! Peerless isn’t far from Effina’s and it’s the oldest continually operated bar in the state of Alabama. Great food too.
They would be so busy if they would allow people to brink BIKES on the train we have a great Bike community and Trails and the Amtrack would be how people could come ride the trail goes all the way back to Atlanta ,
I was stationed in Ft McClellan there in Anniston. They closed it, the army hospital may be still open. Took the bus to Atlanta a few times to get away from this place
as a kid my granddad and I would drive up from dothan just to ride to hattiesburg one day and back for fun. I'm glad they're keeping the station cleaned up these days
FYI, if you book a Flixbus in NYC you could utilize the Moynihan lounge for your trip with the purchase of lounge pass. The windows on the SW side of the lounge face the glory that is the NYC Flixbus corral. Just saying...
No wonder there are few passengers in Anniston. The workers at the non union transit bus factory there earn too little income and vacation time to travel.
best fckn channel in the united states.. i am a public transportation lover from eastern europe and now i am living around anniston for around a year and this channel gave me the enough info for my trip in 3 weeks. you re the goat.
@@MilesinTransithmm I can't find via station ridership stats either but if I ever do I'll send you them! Another idea would be speedrunning the entire GO train network! I believe it's theoretically possible to do in 1 day
Next time you're in town, hit me up! You went to Effina's, but missed out on Alabama's oldest continuously open bar (formerly brothel) called The Peerless with a delicious sandwich called the big Nasty...you were a block away!
The last private intercity passenger train prior to the launch of Brightline was the Rio Grande Zephyr, which outlasted the Southern Crescent by four years.
Always amazes me that train ran until 1983, the streamlined coaches and E units make it look like something out of the 50s but it operated even once Amtrak mostly got rid of their old locos
Alabama has only 3 Amtrak stations. During the 1990s and 2000s it had many more, including Montgomery and Mobile. It also had Decatur and Dothan, served by the Chicago-Miami Floridian til that train was dropped in 1979. The last passenger train to be picked up by Amtrak was the Rio Grande Zephyr in 1983, when Amtrak shifted its Chicago-San Francisco train over the Rio Grande route. Greyhound taking over Flixbus is 1000 times worse than Deutsche Bahn picking up Flixtrain or the short lived Locomore.
@@aeugenegray You don't know what they do off camera. The Pacific Northwest is filled with great spots to dump a body. Frankly it's the best thing about the area.😏
New Doors Closing video: _I flew 18 hours to Atlanta and took a 2 hour train just to sit in the world’s largest office chair_ without notifying anyone and now I’m stuck in Alabama with no way home
Your videos are usually lighthearted and full of jokes. In this episode, however, you discussed a serious topic. I appreciate the fact that you didn’t gloss over the dark past of the town.
According to the Amtrak website the station waiting hours are everyday from 9:30 A.M.-11:00 A.M. and from 6:00 P.M.-7:30 P.M. The train going to New Orleans stops at 10:30 A.M. everyday and the train going to NYC stops at 6:59 P.M. everyday
I BEEN TO THAT STATION! WELCOME TO MY TRAIN TAROTORY! YOU NS FOAMER! >:( but thank you for the possitive review :) Also there is Illinois Central locomotives at the small little yard behind you LOL
