If you ever get tired of being a lawyer you could go into garden design. Your eye for design and color is awesome. I can’t wait to see the front garden fill in and take shape ! 💐💚🙃

Last summer I was sitting at the table eating dinner and spotted a rabbit outside our sliding glass door on our deck, hopping over to a planter with blooming gomphrena. It gets on its hind legs and eats away too. The rabbit climbed 6 steps up to get it. My yard is full of plants, but clearly needed that one, it’s that good! 🤦‍♀️

I have planted gomphrena for the last 3 years and the first 2 years the rabbits chewed off the tops, however the gomphrena rallied and grew fine and the rabbits didn't bother them after that. Now i put cloches over the newly planted ones and take them off when they get a little taller and the rabbits don't seem to be interested in them. Good luck!

I'm in zone 6b in WV and I've had 2 Japanese Maples from Mr. Maple for several years. This year the leaves are dying on both trees. They were beautiful the last few years. I can't imagine what could have happened. Really sad. Your garden is coming along very nice! My Cleome's were over 4 ft tall last year in my clay soil! 😊

Oh my mercy, Matthew! As those plants fill in the garden is going to be spectacular! A thought for you. I have heavy deer and rabbit pressure in my garden; the entire development has deer and rabbits chewing on people' plants. I use Liquid Fence or Bobbex on my plants. The bold bunnies in my yard would be undeterred by sprinkles on the ground. Other gardeners in my neighborhood use the same products. Good luck! I lived in Battle Creek, MI for several years. A neighbor grew beautiful cleome at least 4.5 feet tall. The soil there was a mixture of clay and rocks.

You could try a motion sprinkler for the rabbits and deer if you have any or a female dog would do the trick (Male dogs pee on all the plants and females can be trained to do their business in one area of the yard only.

I use fish emulsion diluted in water sprayed onto my plants to repel rabbits. Rabbits would clean out my sweet potato vines as fast as I could replace them. I then started using the fish emulsion. It has to be reapplied after it rains or when the odor disappears. It really works and is a cheap repellant.

My husband doesn’t understand annuals so we plant mostly perennials, but this year he loved seeing geraniums, lantana and a few pops of color in pots around the gardens. Today I’m weeding the front yard and plan to hit the local farm stand for a few sun/shade loving starts to pop in between perennials. Thank you for the inspiration! 😊

Good luck with the rabbits. The problem is that they are relentless and so must you be. I spray but I plan on just enclosing the three or four areas of plants that both deer and rabbits eat with deer fencing. I have the stakes in the ground and am going to run the netting around like a fence. Hate to do that but I do not want to spray for the season either.

Hi Mathew Variegated plants don't like too much sun due to lack of chlorophyll to protect the leaf surface....depending on leaf size as well. I'd save your maple by potting it asap and find a dappled shade position for it. Also echinacea are very drought tolerant and could be a good drift in your front garden.....Ajuga also is a hardy perenial and is a great ground cover, once established. Butterfly bushes have shallow roots no matter where planted but do best in full sun. ...like you said they don't like transplanting, but cuttings are easily rooted. Some type of small conical fern could be a good replacement for your budlheia or Butterfly Bush. Fancy no one noticed your water fountain in your plan....must have been visually overwhelmed by all your beautiful flowers and trees. Looking so good and will only keep flourishing. Jo.😊

Give the J. Maple time, I had the same thing happen when I moved one from my father’s house. Did strange things for two years like constantly pushing new leaves for them to fall off and push new ones again.

Everything is looking lovely! I can’t wait to see the fountain. Just for the record, not everyone in the West has sandy, or even anything resembling “tilthy” soil. Here on the front range of Colorado we have Colorado red clay (the state is named for it), and it makes gardening here a blood sport. Pretty sure Wyoming and New Mexico have similar clay soil. I don’t do much with annuals, and struggle with perennials that others seem to grow easily even when marked for clay. For example I struggle with salvia and have yet to get one through a full year. I do best with local natives, as well as with Veronica, Artemisia, daylilies, and sedums. And peonies.

You are my fav garden you tuber. I have an acre of landscaped yard and love gardening but hate watering. I've watched your two drip irrigation videos that are very helpful. I have purchased a lot of what I think I will need and haven't put any of it in yet, BUT Matthew, can you talk some more about how you run your water lines, etc. please!!! Do you ever use the 1/4 inch emitter tube for annuals? Maybe each time you plant, you can show how you put in the irrigation.
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 4 месяца назад
I don’t typically encourage 1/4” drip in landscape beds at all due to its reduced flow over long distances. But, I have used it and you may have noticed it in this video around the begonias where there is a small area that needs to be covered but the constraints are too tight to allow for 1/2” drip to be placed in the area easily without many connectors or becoming kinked. In those cases I will typically run 1/2” to the areas where 1/4” is needed first to keep flow and pressure up.
