Hi, I'm Matthew. I grew up in Alabama at the foothills of the Appalachia where the woods were thick, the night sky sparkled, and the tea was sweet. I moved north to SW Ohio in 2016 to follow my dreams and started a garden along the way. I love all things that bloom. This is my journey. Come along.

I am so excited to watch the rose wall grow! I've had my eye on James Galloway as well so it'll be fun to see how it does for you. One tip I just learned from Sarah Raven is to under plant roses with Salvia, apparently they release sulfur that acts as a natural fungicide! Love your gardens :)

❤ My husband and I were walking the front yard when he said something about pruning bushes and I immediately said “I’ll have to check to see what Matthew does”😂. He knew right away I was talking about you and agreed to wait. 😊

@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Burning red, hydrangea, azalea, rose of Sharon, rhododendron, etc. He would chop everything to a height without watching where shoots are coming out of stems.

You mean burning bush? Those could be pruned whenever. You can even cut them to the ground and they’ll come back fresh. Hydrangeas I prune in late winter or early spring when you can see the buds swell. The rose of Sharon could probably be pruned now, but I’ve not typically pruned mine. The others I would prune after flowering else you likely risk cutting off buds this late depending on the variety.

Hi Matthew! The cleanup in the front garden looks good. It was nice to see that you left some annuals that still look pretty. The rose trellis turned out awesome. The cat mint was a nice addition in front of the roses. It just finished that area so nicely. You always make things look so nice. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress of the roses. I'm sure they will be beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing the shrubs, perennials and trees you're getting and where you will be placing them. Everything you do just add more beauty to your areas. Thank you so much for sharing!

Do you get all these shrubs and perennials for free?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 дня назад
No. The perennial delivery from Walters this past week and the shrubs from Baileys were gifted to try - although I am paying for the shrub delivery itself. Almost everything I planted in Spring and Summer was purchased (annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees). I will usually indicate whether they were “sent” to me or I “purchased” them because creators are supposed to disclose that information under FCC rules.

Actually, Matthew , I love the opening now in the back yard without those trees. Couldn’t you plant back closer to the back trees and leave the middle open?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 дня назад
The openness is nice, but I can see my neighbors 3 houses down and they can see me if nothing is replanted. It’s the only location I have to plant for privacy and not shade the cut flower garden. The back trees are going to be cleaned up over the next couple of years because it is full of invasive honeysuckle, so there will be more space in that area in the future. Just small projects at a time for now.

Did y’all catch the mouse running out of the plants at 17:18 bottom right corner. The other day I was mulching and I put my hand down on the ground and felt a wriggling sensation and heard a squeaking sound. It was a shrew! Gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Last fall, I cut my pine barks down to the ground, and they are so beautiful this year. They both grew so much, I had to trim them back a bit this season. I recommend you cut the back to nothing. You won't be disappointed with the new look come Spring/Summer.

Voted for your container ✅Spent the weekend planting, no rain in the 2 week forecast. So I’m dragging hoses again. My husband can’t understand why I keep buying more to plant. Because we’re on 2 acres that’s why😂 Natorp closes on Sunday and we’ve 3 more trees to go in. I think I’m going to reach out and ask them to plant for us.

Ha! Ha! That root ball at the end was amazing. I hate this time of season to say goodbye to my gardens, but once I get to pulling the annuals out I feel accomplished. I bought a tray of dichondra silver falls and never got around to planting them. They're hiding behind my peonies and likely dried up. We had a drought this past month in Minneapolis.
