Metal spherules from the first interstellar meteor have been recovered from the ocean floor during a two week voyage by Avi Loeb, Amir Siraj, and the Galileo Project team.
Amir Siraj is a graduate student at Princeton University’s Department of Astrophysical Sciences. He holds master’s degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and Harvard University in piano performance and astrophysics, respectively. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in astrophysics, and is the youngest laureate of the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Science.

I like how Siraj is a lot more grounded about the steel and wire that was found, I thought it was more than a little irresponsible for Avi Loeb to start immediately suggesting it could be alien in origin...
@gravoc857
@gravoc857 11 месяцев назад
Avi is playing his part in sensationalizing all his work to garner international attention to the subject. It’s irresponsible as a scientist but it’s brilliant as a salesperson of an idea or field. Avi’s picked his preferred poison and tbh I’d make the same choice as him if I was in his shoes. Good science doesn’t always reward the scientist. Often it’s the opposite.
@adityakulkarni9455

Avi is the most grounded person in this field, not sure where you drawing your conclusions from, bit irresponsible to suggest a well accomplished researcher like him could suggest anything extraordinary
@gravoc857
@gravoc857 11 месяцев назад
@@adityakulkarni9455 Avi jumps to the alien conclusion at every corner. Grounded isn’t the right word for Avi. He’s interesting and eccentric, but he often isn’t arguing from a foundation of true science. Which I’m glad for as his eccentric personality and ability to sensationalize things in a fascinating way has really grabbed the attention of the world. But let’s be real - He makes purist scientists cringe.

I’m with ya. This is such a freaking cool experiment and I applaud it. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and spherules of metal that don’t seem like their typical for a meteor of this solar system isn’t even close to evidence of technology, just that it POSSIBLY “ain’t from around these parts”
@ekothesilent9456
@ekothesilent9456 11 месяцев назад
@@roadkillanonymous4807I’ve always disliked that statement. Extraordinary claims should require exactly as much evidence as any other claim. After all who determines which claims are “extraordinary” and how could they possibly say they are a scientist if they are holding certain claims to a different degree of bias compared others. Saying the events of the Bible aren’t true could be considered extraordinary to some. Does that mean that the claim suddenly requires a higher level of scientific scrutiny compared to other realms of science? What this statement really means is “because I disagree with this I need more evidence to believe it than something I DO agree with”

As far as I can see, the worst case scenario of this research is that it is inconclusive. Even then, valuable data will be collected and they have proven that materials collection from the ocean floor is possible. I'd hope to see more research along the same line to continue collecting data. I'm sure that something will be discovered of great value
@spvillano
@spvillano 11 месяцев назад
The initial assessment is due exclusively to velocity of 45 kps. At first blush, well solar escape velocity when crossing earth orbit of 42.1 kps is quite certain, but that doesn't indicate origin. A Kuiper belt object on a cometary course can be easily accelerated by Jupiter to escape velocity and the Kuiper belt is decidedly part of the solar system. So, that would mean we'd need a sample to perform chemical and isotopic ratio analysis to determine if it's extrasolar or solar in origin. Bold claims require significant evidence, not mere velocity. Although, coming out of the ecliptic would add evidence, analysis of the constitution of the object is still required. And Avi's prattling on about alien devices certainly is not helping the case one whit. Indeed, that sounds more like a quip that I'd make, "Well, it could be an solar asteroid that was anomalously accelerated, it could be an extrasolar asteroid, it could be an alien space probe, it could even be the socks missing from my sock drawer, we need more data. I'm around 3 Sigma in certainty it isn't my missing socks".
@TheDavidPoole
@TheDavidPoole 11 месяцев назад
@@spvillano only 3 sigma? Wow, you must have some serious socks! On a more serious note, I love Avi's enthusiasm and hope he has some great results. I was interested in how the sled was setup and being used. My thoughts was that having swappable bodies containing the magnets, so you would just have one run per bed and then store that for a complete clean down and assessment in lad conditions. Maybe with more funding another thorough larger run can be made potentially with a more complicated capture arrangement, a little like a mobile dredge rather than just a simple magnet sled. Very exiting science.

Something I've wondered. How do they know that a meteor is interstellar just based on its velocity? Yes, a velocity means that its not bound to the Sun, but there's more than one way to produce that velocity. An object with such a velocity could certainly be an interstellar object. But objects do get accelerated out of the solar system by natural processes. An asteroid could be accelerated by an interaction with Jupiter or Saturn, accelerated to beyond Solar escape velocity. If that acceleration sent it on an inward path, but with enough velocity that it would fly back out again, it could appear like an interstellar meteor. And such an object might collide with Earth. Sure, only a tiny tiny portion of asteroids accelerated by an interaction with Jupiter or Saturn will collide with Earth. But in the solar system, endogenous asteroids will vastly outnumber interstellar asteroids. And only a small portion of interstellar asteroids would collide with Earth as they pass through the system. I just wonder how they distinguish an interstellar meteor vs one that was boosted to escape velocity by an interaction with Jupiter, Saturn, or other large planet.

Presumably it is similar to riding a train and throwing a ball sideways. No matter how hard you throw it it will still have some momentum from the train ride, interstellar meteors will have movement completely different to our solar system.
@glennwiz
@glennwiz 11 месяцев назад
its all about "escape velocity". To be local you are slower then the suns escape velocity,, if you come in screeaming way above sun escape velocity speed you can only be a interstellar object
@DrMackSplackem
@DrMackSplackem 11 месяцев назад
@@glennwiz Wait a minute there. An interstellar object can only become one to begin with by just such an ejection from its native system, so this can't be true. I'm pretty sure isotope ratios will be brought to bear on the question of a candidate object's possible extrasolar origin.
@jackesioto
@jackesioto 11 месяцев назад
There are several ways to tell if a meteor came from another solar system, like velocity (objects ejected from their native star systems are necessarily faster than those still gravitationally bound to their stars), material and shape.
@glennwiz
@glennwiz 11 месяцев назад
@@DrMackSplackem i see what you are saying but it all relativistic speeds. The speed of the astroid might be null in relative to a other galactic object but, when we are moving trough its frame of refrence it will for us look like its screaming trought the solarsystem.

Isn't the entire solar system ultimately made from interstellar gas and dust? It's from different parts of the galaxy than where we are now, so studying this stuff gives us a better understanding of the galaxy.

Now this man speaks science. The weird thing about Avi Loeb is how weirdly unscientific his communication is, spurring my suspicions. Amir Siraj seems to be the actual brain child behind all of this.

The use of occams Razor is not as though it would be used. If used at all. The sheer volume of the universe makes it highly unlikely that we are being visited by aliens. And to be honest there’s no hard evidence of aliens. Could it be probes with AI intelligence might be possible. A civilisation sending out in all directions would make sense. But wouldn’t it be how we would do it. I know it’s from human perspective but I would think it very small probes because it would be so much easier. But it is just a guess. But I’m quite sure this is how it would be done. And I think we will do it few years ahead. Anyway we will we have to wait and see

Had to drain the gas tank on my motorcycle to do a repair on the engine. The gas did not flow through gravity. I had to suck on the hose really hard and then point it downward into the tank. I got a bunch of gas in my mouth. It tastes like crap.
