Release Date: 4 November 2011 (United States)
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.
Genre: Drama / History / Thriller
Cast: Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Derek Jacobi, Rhys Ifans, Xavier Samuel, Jamie Bower, Edward Hogg, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall
Director: Roland Emmerich
Screenplay By: John Orloff

11 years later, and I still keep coming back to this movie. I absolutely love it and have seen it about 15 times, thanks to the DVD. I really LOVED Ifans in this and his character. I hated the character of 'Will', so Mr Spall did his job of being the antagonist very well also. Its beautifully filmed. The music in it was fantastic. As a big fan of the movie and soundtrack of 'Elizabeth' with Cate Blanchett, I recognized a couple of pieces of music from that movie were also used in this movie... The same small piece from Mozart's 'Requiem' was used in both movies. Even more interesting, is the song, 'Night Of The Long Knives'. I've only ever heard it in the Elizabeth movie. It's also used in this movie. What a gorgeous piece of music it is! Anyhow, I can't recommend this movie enough. I rate it a 10+. 👍❤️

WONDERFUL film, brilliant screenplay -- I hosted Roland Emmerich, Joely Richardson, and John Orloff at the Oxford Union when they were promoting the film. John Orloff is especially brilliant. Truly. My only gripe is the name -- "Anonymous" seems so underwhelming for the story and the brilliance of the writing. It definitely needed a name worthy of the film.

"To be, or not to be, that is the question:" Oh how could a petty, middle class person such as William Shakespeare could have written such beautiful work?! Of course it couldn't be other than an aristocrat could have done such marvel in literature. It's an absurd to fathom or play with the knowledge a peasant, pauper or middle class for that matter could ever write.

Awesome movie, loved the intricacies and how it ties together (or rather unravels) at the end. And weather people want to just sit back and watch it as fiction, or a what-if...at the end it had me even briefly thinking, well what if Shakespeare isn't who we think he is?

The thing I find with Anti-stratofordian theory is why would there have been concrete evidence to support a middle class playwright's schooling and life? And to suggest that he couldn't have written about court life is just social snobbery. If I were to write a satire based on Buckingham Palace using imagination that is entirely conceivable. Anti-stratfordians are often quite fanatical on the subject as if hell bent to prove there was some terrible lie on the authorship of these plays and poems. The strange determination to de-fame William Shakespeare is for some people a fundamentalist cause worthy of shouting about on Speaker's Corner. It's said there isn't any evidence that Shakepeare wrote the plays, but there is no evidence to say he didn't. The debate is interesting and premise for a film. I can't however see how it thrives and continues without one shred of actual bonafide evidence.
@jackfaulkner2688
@jackfaulkner2688 9 лет назад
Proclus Diadochu In truth, I've barely read his plays with a view to analysis them for that point, i've begun to not even care about the argument. I've read James Shaperio's book on the subject and recently I watched the film anonymous. I thought it was just a bad film. I mean that in terms of it's merit as a film. I find the argument boring now and have simply moved on. I don't think it matters. I watched Titus Andronicus over the summer, it was really brilliant. So to summarise, the film anonymous, awful Titus Andronicus, excellent.

Shakespeare's writings were based on an Arab writer who lived during the Abbasid era. Hence Sheikh Sabar (both short a). Arabic letters 'seen' 'ba' 'ra' with fatha on the first two letters. Which means to inquire or gain information. Like most things in the European Renaissance, they were heavily influenced if not out right imported from the Muslim Golden Age of the sciences, mathematics, astronomy, physics and literature.

"European Renaissance, they were heavily influenced if not out right imported from the Muslim Golden Age of the sciences, mathematics, astronomy, physics and literature. " They ware all based on Greek and Roman work. And the Renaissance came with the fall of Constantinopolis.

Of course there was some Greek and Roman influence. The Muslims were influenced by the Greeks and Romans to some degree. However, how about the many many European (namely Italian) traders who smuggled in Arabic books in the 1200 and 1300s and spent decades secretly building libraries of scientific books that were translated from Arabic to Latin. Secretly because if anyone was caught with an 'Islamic' book, they were put to death, regardless of the contents. No honest scholar today can deny the influence of the Muslim Golden Age on that of the Renaissance.

Shakespeare wasn't even the only middle class writer to achieve great fame in his time. The idea that only the upper class could write well is baloney.

One of the best movies you’ve never heard of! I am certainly an Oxfordian, with Edward De Vere as a lock. He checks off the necessary boxes as candidate for being the author. He lived in Italy for several years, where at least 12 of the plays are set. He spoke Greek, Latin, French. He was a noble, which was the focus of many of the plays. He had a legal education and the writer’s accuracy on legal matters of the time was spot on. One intriguing detail is that it was written in his own time that he wrote under a nom-de-plume (I.e. pen name) at that time, although the name or names were never given. The first folio, when published, was written with Shake-Speare hyphenated. At that time, this often referred to a nom de plume or pseudonym. Will spelled his last name ‘Shaksper’ or ‘Shaxper’. Poor Will just didn’t have the intellect or education.

Yes--it is taken seriously, but really has little to no actual evidence to support. It is all on the supposition that an unlettered country lout like Shakespeare who had not had university education could not possibly have written what he wrote. Unless--he were a genius.

@@grandsonsofthepioneers8575 Exactly! Beethoven was Deaf, but that doesn't mean he didn't write all the things attributed to him. Steven Hawking couldn't move or speak, that doesn't mean he didn't solve black holes, the big bang, and all those other things. Stevie Wonder was Blind, but that doesn't mean he couldn't play the piano or harmonica well to literally crowds of thousands of people. Some people are just geniuses in their fields, and Shakespeare was indeed a genius of the English Language.

Well Tiana, the speculation is that Romeo and Juliet was adapted by de Vere to examine his own affair with Ann Vavasour. The pitched battles between the Montagues and the Capulets certainly resembles the skirmishes that the de Vere household waged with the Vavasour household in and around London. You should note that romEUS is changed to romEO: EO is for Earl of Oxford, and was how de Vere signed some of his sonnets and poems.

I thought the film was fascinating! If you do your research, there is still no concrete evidence today that says Shakespeare got proper schooling. When you read the works, it shows written mastery of a higher order and a great knowledge of aristocratic society that Shakespeare would not have been apart of. Also very little evidence of his hand-writing exists at all, only a few signatures. I think it could be a plausible cause that Shakespeare was a vessel being used by someone above him.

" I think it could be a plausible cause that Shakespeare was a vessel being used by someone above him. " I couldnt have said it better myself. Considering what ive found out about all the lies in history. Shakespeares myth isnt that hard to believe. Why?? So many ppl still believe that Newton invented Calculus or that Pythagoras Theorem was created him! So many lies passed off as truth. There are so many sheeps out there including this page that will protect these lies. If you find out more things on shakespeare pls post it here, thanks!
