We set out on fishing opener weekend with one goal in mind: to catch giant lake trout. Just four days after I caught my stunning, once in a lifetime Lake Trout (38inches and 20+ lbs), my buddy Joe just had to one-up me and catch a larger fish. This time, drift-trolling a silver spoon just off bottom in relatively shallow water (25-30').
This fish measured just shy of 40" and likely weighed somewhere between 20-25lbs. It fought even harder than the fish I caught on opening day, taking Joe and our canoe for a 15 minute ride around Lac La Croix. I have never seen a freshwater fish fight like this - I am privileged to have seen two of these beauties caught in one trip into the BWCA.
Landing a giant fish in a canoe is one of the most thrilling things I have ever done in the Boundary Waters. I am truly humbled that I got the chance to successfully land one myself, and help my buddy land another on the same trip. Both of these fish were our personal best lake trout and ones we will never forget.
I am so happy I caught both of these rare beauties on camera AND was able to release them both safely to be caught another day. Please practice catch, photo and release with ANY trophy fish so we can work together to protect the population. Fishing pressure is only going to go up as these areas become more frequently visited, let's protect this resource for future generations to enjoy. Thanks for watching!!
