This is a great video for repair work. Seeing the full confidence of Jr on the telehandler with wheel off the trailer is very encouraging - both from dad and from Jr's viewpoint. His experience shows with the detailed maneuvering of the fork loads. As somebody who spent years in education of mechanical engineering, stress analysis, force distribution, etc. and many years in engineering consulting with computer modeling of mechanical parts, the explanation of the stresses on the axle was painful to hear. 😊 Having said that, the explanation is generally right. The issue is the distribution of forces on the axle at differing locations and the bending moments imposed on the axle. While the shear load at the bearing is the same (the weight of the tractor on the axle does not change), the change of bending moments along the length of the axle is what changes. When using the hubs, bending moments are created further away from the bearing. It would be easier to explain with a diagram - bending moments vs. distance out from the bearing. I see lots of Rube-Goldberg fittings on equipment that get the job done, but are far afield from what the engineers envisioned when the design was created. The few failures, despite the badly overloaded parts, says the design safety factors are very high. Many parts are stressed far beyond the design limits, yet remain in service. In some cases, the design loadings are very difficult to determine. This is especially true in tillage equipment. You had broken bolts on a piece a few weeks ago - chisel plow? Why those failed would be an interesting study. Obviously, there is a balance between cost and weight vs. unexpected overload. I spent many years analyzing mechanical failures. So the topic of failures remains very interesting to me. From that viewpoint - keep breaking things so we can see how the failures are manifested! 😂

I noticed When Alex? was removing the Hub bolts and you were talking you you reached in and tighten in the top one, Which to me showed great situational awareness on your part. I do hope though you explained to her what You did so she knows next time why you done it so it does fall off and hit her

Those axles are quite an undertaking. I remember seeing that RTV silicone gasket maker in the 80’s when it was hot stuff. However everyone just added it to the old cork gaskets rather than use it alone- so much for reading the directions. 🤣🤣🤣😂

Every day of my 64 years on this planet I learn something. I never considered the extra stress snap-on duals would put on an axle compared to hub duals. Makes perfect sense... just never thought of it. If we could afford it we always go with hub mounted duals anyway but there have been times back in the 70's and 80's when there just wasn't the money.

Andy I have to say you have raised your kids in a great way as they know what work, responsibility and financial is all about and they get paid for doing there job and you have brought them up doing stuff at a young age where as others wouldn't do the same job until they are in there 20's or 30's like Andrew Alex and Sarah welding the box last winter. Plus you have a bunch of great people working for you and you have taught them a thing or to around the shop. You have plenty of expertise and experienced following in your footsteps when you want to retire but I don't think you will ever retire but I think you need to keep the Mrs happy!

Andy, it makes it so much easier if you cut the heads off some long bolts, put them in a couple upper bolt holes on the differential housing and use them as pilot bolts to line everything up

Andy another great video, my brother and I had to replace the outer axle bearing on a red tractor a couple years ago. We did everything ourselves, the bearing preload was similar to JD. We found that using a couple lengths of the proper size all-thread screwed into the axle bolt holes, the axle trumpet will slide into place while rocking the axle shaft with a pipe wrench.

I have seen plenty of axels break on the old 30 and 40 series but never on the newer models. I imagine you’re right, those snap on duals and the axel weights are the culprit. Good time to change brake pads too 🤣

The video is impressive. The expertise required is obvious. You showed the cost of parts. The labour is a cost was well. You certainly need to have the skill to complete the installation. Hello Andy had time to watch this. An impressive repair out in the field. By what ic the snap on's are not a good thing to use putting more strain on the axle. As where the hub direct on the axle may very pressure. This was interesting thanks for taking the time to record this. Glad the weather was not bad to repair this. I kind of thought this was just a common issue with Deere's or at least every time I see this issue it's with a Deere. Just thought they had some steel issues with the axles. Nice to see all of the family helping out. I know it's a pita doing all of this kind of stuff by yourself.

Just watching some videos I missed...man your daughters are so great. Thay are some real farm techs.

Hey Andy. Most aircraft reciprocating engines in general aviation, are opposed cylinders. Because of that, you can't use a gasket or a silicone gasket sealant to seal the engine case half housings. If you did, it would change the stroke of the engine and rob horse power. What the engine manufacturer's came up with was to use silk thread. On 1 side of the case engine half sealing surface you put on a thin sticky substance. Can't remember what it's called, but just think of it like a kids sticky hands after eating cotton candy. Then you're going to take 2 pieces of your silk thread and weave them back & fourth as tightly as you can, all the way around the case, without ever crossing each piece. The weaving back & fourth increases the surface area of the seal. It works great and never leaks.

0:25 One thing I enjoy about Andy's reporting on causes of mechanical failures, is that it forces me to go back and revisit M.E. courses on statics and Material Properties and correlate the engineering concepts to actual real life problems. I also had to look up the geometry on snap on duel wheels. In this instance I had to go revisit definitions on torsional stress. Which brings up the question : is the real root cause of the failure an underspec'd material strength by the axle manufacturer ?

Andy, I love Sara, she's not afraid to get her hands dirty and jumps right when it's welding electrical or turning wrenches, I don't see enough of Charlie or Alex as I do Sara with you, she's a real benefit to the farm. Andy at prices like that those DEERE should fix their selves

Nice repair! Okay I see a few (armchair mechanics lol) don't understand how longer axles work better, basically snap on dualls make for one very wide tire and one stress point on the axle where the inside rim bolts on whereas bolt on dualls spread out stress on the axle to two stress points and actually to right where each separate tire/rim bolts on. So easy to explain even a cave man could do it. May-Maybe.

A repair like this is how I found One Lonely Farmer. He was pulling the Oliver 2755 vs Deere 5020 and broke the axle on the Oliver and repaired it in the field, just like this.

So many people do not understand leverage. The stresses are multiplied every foot that the tires are past neutral. Add that with the stress of pulling hard. It’s very simple how it can happen

These tractors could be ordered with a larger heavy duty axle from the factory. I have one of these 8000 series that is a European model that has the short axle like this one had because they run the wide tires over there without duals. I have thought I would like duals on mine but with the short axle snap on is my only option. I run heavy manure tanks but nothing like a frack tank!!! I'm surprised this one broke.

Northeast Stihl was right in my hometown of Shelton Ct! Back in the late 90s I believe they built a great big new warehouse in Shelton, basically about 1/2mi down the road from the original shop! Then I believe in the last 10 years they built their new place in Oxford Ct! Which is one town over from where I live today in Beacon Falls Ct! They were basically a stones throw [farmer language] from Rt8 in Shelton Connecticut since the beginning of NE Stihl way back in the 60s. I believe, when my grandfather opened his own John Deere dealer in Shelton also! Anyway, they are now in Oxford Ct, near both RT8 & I84 for shipping around the east coast of the US! I used to know almost everyone there, Al Bonass & Mike in the repair issue shop, Cindy in the office, Tony in shipping! Most are probably retired today! My Grandfather Joe, & Uncles Tony, & Joe Jr Martinka, knew all the very first guys, the guys from day 1 there! I also have another Uncle Henery Martinka, that had his JD dealer or RT7 in Shaftsbury Vt! I remember going into Stihls the very first shop as a very young kid, but I don't remember the original guy's names! I'm sure my uncle does! Also, another original dairy farmer from Shelton Ct is [Zenny] aka Bob Pawlowski, he worked his uncles farm Shelton's Dairy, where we all worked & delivered milk in glass quarts, all over town! He is also in upstate NY, since the mid 90s & I believe he is a somebody with Channel seed, & he has his own farm in Verona Mills NY! I wouldn't doubt you know him, as it seems he knows everyone, especially in Connecticut & New York! Best of luck with your junk 😂😂😂😂! At least you have two real good pieces of equipment on your farm 😂😂😂😂! Your daughters are worth their weight in gold! It's so awesome to see them out working with you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻! Enjoy every minute, because it goes way too fast! Also, don't be afraid to listen to them! They may want to do things a different way, it may even cost you more money! But they wouldn't do anything to ruin what your family has made, Also I'm sure they are thinking more long term then even you are! Best of luck this season!
