No reason it can't be both. Building Something is one of life's greatest accomplishments. Seeing something you've built successfully recover someone will be another Life Lesson.
Indeed hes just building stuff. Theres no sophisticated master plan, which is why his wrecker broke down so often. Nonetheless, these kids learn invaluable fabricating skills by getting the opportunity
@patrickbass3542 he is just a salt of the earth best kind of person there is. Positive attitude, is everything prefect no but sees the best in things. I've met him and he is the same in real life as in the videos from my experience.
For the younger generation . . . Good design is based on the K.I.S.S. principle = "Keep it Simple, Stupid" or "Keep it Simply Stupid", that is, make it uncomplicated, or to simplify things as much as possible, the acronym first used by Kelly Johnson, 1960, lead engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works. My dad worked for this man.
The Spud Truck is coming along awesome! I love that the first ever vehicle it hauled was Matt's '60 Corvair 700 coupe aka Caroline! I wore my Team MORRVAIR shirt, and drove my '65 Corvair 500 sedan roughly 60 miles today (and saw a car in town with Utah plates, which made it feel more complete!)
Matt after a working for more than 2 decades off road in the construction industry the best off road twin axle was a walking beam axle. That is why all off road articulated dump trucks have walking beam axles
@@Buck1954 Same for me, I was watching a video on Jay Leno's channel about a $300,000 dollar 1957 resto-mod, it's a beautiful car, but all I could see was that the body molding didn't line up perfectly across the door.
my 47 Willys cj2a ran different ratios front and rear. they were both 5.38 to 1 but off a small percentage point .was told that a small amount of binding will remove some back lash. you will be fine
Empty ketchup bottles filled with water are handy for putting out small fires around the shop. Not that I've needed one before... 😏🤣 An old spray bottle works too.
Imagine if it used steering axels using hydraulic steering in the rear. With a lockout for street that puts a 1" pin in the tie rods using a electric latch, locking it in center. Or it could steer by electric linear actuator. Then it can steer with a tiny knob. Maybe in the center of the steering wheel. That is opposite of the steering wheel to make turns . It could make backing in tight spots amazing! Heck doing anything in a tight spot would be easy .. it should turn on a dime, and give you a nickel and 4 pennies back! Possibly 5 pennies!😮!
Just watched Rubicon recovery. Would a "Matt's Coilover Shock" designed to attach from wrecker to tow vehicle make towing smoother plus act as vehicle to wrecker bump stop? (2 standard tow hitch mounts and some sort of ball joint to attach shock, then Matt's Straps to prevent over extension) Shock would prolly get a lil hot though. May even be able to use flex straps to act as slap stop when wrecker lurches forward.
Only thing I’m worried about is the OSB on the shop wall I helped a friend rebuild his shop after a spark, got into the wood and burnt it to the ground.🫣
Colby started out as a camera guy and now he is learning how to program a plasma cutter and help out here and there. He is another great part of the team ✓

0:50 for sure box those. Whenever you have features that have thin proportions, but carry big loads on them, especially telegraphed like that, box it. Don't even think, just do it. Spray weld primer in, box it and forget about it.
I am not easily influenced by RU-vid videos but I have to admit I immediately purchased a Dewalt pressure washer with lots of power. I plan to mow my lawn with it.
My buddy recently found an ad for a pressure washer for sale. It was a big commercial unit at 4500 psi or something crazy and the dude planned to strip paint off the siding of his house with it. The ad stated that he blew some of the siding off his house AND managed to land himself in the hospital after putting his hand in front of the nozzle. I thought it was funny. Some people should stick to hand tools.
The world needs more families like this. More dads like Matt. Chintzy RU-vid stuff or not, it’s still great to see. The awkwardness of the boys giving the trophy to Matt shows how real that actually really are. Now get back to work.
Kaulin put his face too close to a scope 🤣 nothing to be ashamed of, we've all been there. I've seen Infantry vets with multiple tours still get bit by a scope once in awhile. It's so easy to forget because it only hurts for a day and then you forget about it a year later until you make the same mistake
can't hate on Matt- the man has more drive than any race car!!! Building all these riggs (simultaneously more or less) and maintaining his actual business. I am so impressed by his "under a tree mechanic" mentality + produce such fine machinery. definitely excited to see SWEET CAROLINE in action next year. I know there is some entertaining footage to come.
Based on Matt's tyre sizes and diff ratios, the front will outpace the rear by only 0.82%. That assumes the front and rear tyre rolling diameters are exactly 42 and 35 inches which will vary all the time with pressure, load and wear. That's pretty close, probably closer than other off road vehicles with the same tyres and diffs and uneven tyre wear or load from front to back.
A reporter once asked the great Mickey Thompson, "What's it like to drive the Baja 1000?" Mickey's response, "Try to imagine an all-day plane crash" Many years ago, about 45 of 'em, I was wrenching in a shop that did nothing but air-cooled Volkswagens. K&N Filters brought their VW Thing Baja Pre-runner in for us to work on the engine. Surprised me that it wasn't as "caged" as I'd expected. So, I figure they used it more for route checking, than running at speed. Keep up the great work, Matt and crew. We love it. Kolby, you're doing fine with the camera.
@@larrydbarr4045 , That quote is hilarious. Thankfully suspension has come a long way. That must be such a brutal ride on your back. Yet Matt is pursuing his dreams as it is a endurance race of man, machine and spirit. LoL
Matt's cornered the market on Corvair bits and pieces, and that's for sure. I've always said, "stuff always expands to fill the space available" your MORR yard is a prime example of that, oh, I'm just jealous!
Probably inappropriate to ask but where I come from we still ask. Kaulin, what’s up with the shiner? Kicked by a horse? Or is it more like “you should see the other guy!”?
"This thing can't even go over a curb at Wal-Mart. This one will be able to drive through Wal-Mart!" More excited and truer words have never been spoken by a man who is willing to drive through Wal-Mart.
As a truck driver I immediately thought of the times I've had to drive over a curb loaded because of tight streets or traffic and wrecked a $1000 steer tire. Curbs and loaded semis do not get along.
“I’ve got good kids”... that’s a powerful statement. You have provided proper up-bringing and support and knowledge and dependence in your boys... I’m a young father myself.. ( 5 year old son and 2 little girls). Maybe different views on things but I can agree that bringing your children to church and getting God involved plays a huge role in the the future leaders of this world. Happy belated Fathers Day to the dads. And too all the dads reading this, God can help you no matter what.. we all need a good father to lead us. Love the videos Matt, your work does not go in-noticed
uhhhh Matt you should re adjust the diheadral on the radius of the Munson latch behind the fragistat ....gthoh with that! That drives me crazy . It's not your project, ITS MATT'S let him build it test it break it and fix it! That's why we're here, not to be keyboard supervisors lol🎉
Matt, (what about) sending the passenger door to Robby and have his new sheet metal fabricator straighten it out so you can keep the original door on the truck?
A person who basically puts ideas directly into tangible products without drawings, schematics and can't really put the plan in paper is simply called a genius. That's what Matt is.
0:50 for sure box those. Whenever you have features that have thin proportions, but carry big loads on them, especially telegraphed like that, box it. Don't even think, just do it. Spray weld primer in, box it and forget about it.
My first thought when you were talking about "Why don't you...." is for you to say, "Why don't you shut up!" LOL. I'm an aeronautical engineer/pilot and really enjoy this. Can't do anything like this in aviation.
When everyone was asked what their job was as the camera pointed at them, Jake responded that he was the Boss. Matt immediately responded with a knee permit reaction and mumbled, "I don't know who made him the Boss." Jake looked shocked while looking at the camera. Jake immediately turned left and headed out the entry door and didn't come back..😢😢!!
15:34 "1) Its technique. 2) I have back problems" one of the funniest things Colby has ever said lmao. Colby your camera work is just fine, I think the commenter may have problems of the thing behind the eyeballs. :D
Simply Functional! That sounds like a Value Added Benefit! You should name that 6X6 "Babe" after Paul Bunyan's Ox! His 🐃 was gigantic and blue and could pull a forest of trees on a sled! 🗿❤😂
So truly I love Lawrence to death. Is an awesome person. He will build you a awesome motor I think he would have been a lot better off with that big block that's in that truck, make the other 427 and then you got something in there. Everybody puts an ls in there truck. Don't need an ls , it needs what it's got thinking about it, matt come on.m
"THE BALLAD OF MATT, THE FABRICATING MAN: Oh, I'm going to lubricate my gears with your tears I'm going to torque down all your fears with my jeers A claw hammer is still a hammer Listen to me, I don't stammer! Every tool is also a hammer! I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam I'm Matt, the fabricating man!
It’s funny I had never noticed the movement people must be complaining about until he said something. The style doesn’t bother me, but now I can’t “unsee” it, haha. Funny how that goes.
@@mediocreman2 I can never understand people who complain about the quality of something they are receiving for free. If it makes you sick don't watch it, simple as that.
Ok ! I'm Excited ! I'm your new Number 1 Fan. Lets race BAJA ! I wanna say hi to your crew and let them know I like what I am seeing. Let's Rock The Park!
It's good to see Max hanging around in the shop. We don't see him or Lady on the recoveries that much. Lady and Peanut came ambling through while they were measuring the cam. Peanut is the one with all the energy and into everything that gets on camera the most.
I mean honestly!! I don’t understand how people bring themselves to question Matt on anything on his builds!!!! He is the mutha fuckin YODA of building anything!!! Come on people save it. The man is a surgeon!! he has his doctrine in mechanics and fabrication!!
It's freaky. Matt is starting to read my mind. over half of the things he explained starting around the 40 minute mark, I had questions on. anyways, would you consider using the Ford twin traction beam or the twin I beam front suspension for the baja corvair? they are incredibly stable at high speeds off road. just had another thought, you could call it the Borvair, before you shoot it down, wild bores are unstoppable and fierce.
Colby, you're too young to have back problems. Get to the doctor, chiropractor, gym or even just get a massage just to find out where your back is as far as which treatment will help you. Good luck. Oh, also replace your shoes more often. Trail runners would be a good fit for what you do. Most importantly, Make sure your bed is keeping you comfortable. 👍🏽😎
That was a really good try to speech me, but I’m always kind of concerned like you should add like a force bumper on the front of the truck once you try to finish it because if you made your bumper a bit more stronger more durable, it would last more longer and then you would try to repaint it to make it the same color as the truck Your bumper can be strong and can be much more efficient way any bumper would literally just come out ripped right off the front end but you need a stronger more durable one so I recommend you try to design one that’s more sophisticated included so that way you have your winch there And also add one more thing put a stack on the front side of the truck because if we much easier if you had one
😂 yall remind me of the dursleys from harry potter....how many projects are we working on right now...36 counted them myself....36 LAST YEAR WE HAD 37. Well some of them are quite a bit bigger than last year...I don't care how big they are.. later on we'll go out and get you 2 more projects 😂
Assuming the spud truck will operating on the highway, are there any plans for a fold-down rear bumper with warning/brake lights to minimize the chance of idiots driving under the bed? Love your channel!
I used to own a towing company back in the 90s. I love this build you're doing. Thanks for explaining how you were going to route the cable over the bed. A fairlead will work great. This truck is going to be so cool when it is done.
THANK YOU MATT AND GANG,,QUESTION,,I WATCH YOUR AWESOME VIDEOS,THIS ONE HAD SEVERAL COMMERCIALS WITH JOE BIDING,I THINK ASKING FOR 5$.DO YOU THINK I SHOULD SEND HIM 5?...THANK YOU
Use the original gas tank as a fresh water tank. You could drink it, wash off dirty broken rigs, get the mud off your boots... Other water related stuff too!
wow this just poped up for me! i think that door damage can be pounded out by someone who knows what they are doing, might still need some fresh paint but dont you know a guy who is all about paint?
