Great video as always mate! Not sure if I have but very possibly. My mate did catch the same trout as me though. Cracking fish for the small river in the upper reaches. He was with me when I caught it then battered the same spot for weeks until he got it! I didn’t want to admit it was the same fish but there was no denying it after some photo comparison. Good times!
I'm pretty sure I caught the same fish once in two consecutive days from the same pool. The fish were same size so I figured they were the same. I need to do the same analysis as you did with the spots from the pictures to be sure. Why didn't I figure that out before...
@@LooneyLoon it was a mate of mine who said ‘that’s the same fish’ and showed me the images side by side! I’ll definitely start paying more attention now. I actually think I’ve caught the 2nd fish in this video too 😂
Thanks Caleb! I'll try to get back up to Assynt soon 👍🏼. For the wee rivers, I use 4wt and 5wt fibreglass rods and a 10ft 3wt euro rod for nymphing. The rod I'm using in this video is a 4wt Epic 476 rod, built in Scotland by Sandy Nelson 👍🏼. Gorgeous rod - the only down side is I have to give it back to my mate 😂😂
Hey Sean, new to fly fishing and been trying the Lynn Park stretch of white cart but not had any luck just yet. Is nymph with a strike indicator a sensible way to fish this bit of water or will the strike indicator spook the fish in such a small stream?
Hi Grant. Stick with it mate, the fishing has been really tough these past few weeks but it will definitely improve when the water warms up a bit. I wouldn't hesitate to fish nymphs under an indicator. The 2nd trout in this video wasn't spooked by a 5.5mm tungsten bead splashing into the water, so I doubt an indicator would bother them either. Yarn indicator is the way to go if you're worried about spooking them. Tight lines bud 👍🏼🐟🎣
Hi mate where's my best place to take my 6 year old float fishing ? I stay in Govan and was thinking pollok country park a 5 min drive from me . So you have a FB page ?.
Hi John, I don't fish in Pollok park, but there's some nice slower water and I'm sure you'd do well on the float in there. Linn park has a few deeper sections but it's mainly fly water. Good luck mate. Great to get the young uns interested!
Don't know why but went to check some of your videos out again and couldn't find your channel in my channel list so I searched it and it said I wasn't subscribed. So resubscribed think its a common thing to happen on RU-vid now and then.
Great video again, we’re truly bless for some the waters and rivers we have here in Scotland.. great video. As you said think we’re needing wee bit of heat into the water.. tight lines mate
Thanks mate! Couldn't agree with you more. The fly life in my local river is amazing and a very good sign of the health of the river. Couple of weeks and the fishing should really pick up 👍🏼🎣🐟
Thanks John! If you're local, definitely give it a go. It should really come alive in the next couple of weeks. I'd get waders from the Glasgow Angling Centre or Angling Active. For mail order, Fly Fishing Tackle down in Devon are brilliant - have had recent positive experiences with them 👍🏼
@@John-by2su If you have the budget, I would take a look at the Simms tributary waders. They're £200 and probably the best deal out there. You can get cheaper waders, of course. I had a pair of Greys that cost me a little over £100 back in the day and they lasted me years before the seams failed. But honestly, waders are literally the hardest thing to recommend- on the one hand, you get what you pay for but on the other, even the most expensive pair in the world will rip on a barbed wire fence!
Great stuff. Love your whole outlook and approach. Love to see the Black Cart at Johnstone being fly fished and the Brdge of Weir section of the gryffe from the tanner down to where Craigend's Estate used to stand.
Cheers Paul! I’ve never fished the black cart, believe it or not. Once the restrictions lift, I’m looking forward to exploring a few of the other streams in and around Glasgow 👍🏼
Thanks Jan! I'm using a 7'6 glass rod. It's an epic 476 blank, built in Scotland by an amazing rod builder called Sandy Nelson. 5wt rio Gold line and a 12ft tapered leader with a short section of tippet added 👍🏼🎣🐟
Quality video mate. Im new to fly fishing, was down at Lynn park last week but had no luck. Theres always next time haha 🤣 keep the videos coming man pleasure to watch them mate 🎣
Thanks mate! And don’t be too disheartened. The fishing has been tough going these past few weeks. Wee bump in temperature and the river should really come to life 👍🏼
Thank you for making this video. My days of fishing the rivers has sadly come to an end but it was great to watch you fishing. It brought back many happy memories of fishing my local Scottish river. Tight lines, dry feet and please stay safe. Bill M8-) Haddington
Hope to bump into you sometime next year on the banks of the cart. I am coming home after 44 years abroad to where I grew up very close to the Cart. I promise to put your favourite fish back in the unlikely event I'll actually catch a fish.
Fingers crossed! I haven't been fishing the Cart much this summer but I hope you're enjoying being back in Glasgow and catching a couple of fish. The salmon run tends to be a late one (Sept/Oct) but the trout should be all over the system by now and hungry for the fly. Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣
@@SouthsideFlyFishing thanks for your response. I dreamed about catching a trout or salmon on the cart between Millholm and the Linn park waterfall when I was a kid in the 1960's and hope to fulfill this dream maybe next year if we can get this covid debacle behind us. Happy fishing and all the best for now.
I have bought permit today, I'm new to fish on the white cart water, can you recommend some good spots. Linn park and pollock park which one is better if I use lure and bait, many thanks.
Hi Xia, both parks can fish well. Linn tends to be better for fly fishing, Pollock for other methods. I wouldn't recommend any particular spots. If you go for a walk along the river in either place, you'll quickly spot the deeper pools which tend to suit lure and bait fishing. Tight lines :)
grew up fishing the white cart fae abt 92 to 2000. the stretch in hunterhill doon jennyswell just at hawkhead Bridge used to be amazing, but ruined by poaching and unkempt
Hi Sean, great video as usual. Just wondering.. when you buy a permit does a map come with it? I'd love to try it for a day but don't know the water. Cheers.
Thanks Alex! I don’t think the permit comes with a map but I always give a place a quick look on Google earth before fishing it. You could always try a wee message to the angling association on Facebook and I’m sure someone would point you in the right direction 👍🏼🎣
Recently bought the year permit & bought a day pass the week before there’s no map included mate there’s a good entrance behind williamwood school a gate next to the family centre there’s a path takes you around a good stretch of water
@@SouthsideFlyFishing the stretch behind the playing fields up to the viaducts as been by far the most productive section for me I’ve landed 17 over the last 3 times up that stretch just nymphing the pools in front of the viaduct have been fantastic
Thank you! The rod I'm using in this video is a 4wt fibreglass rod. It's an Epic 476 blank, built in Scotland by a very talented rod builder called Sandy Nelson 👍🏼
Hello, i watch your vidéo for a while and i really like your job ! Concerning this vidéo and the other one, i don't know how it works in scotland but if you were in France where i live, with all the clues you left to find the location where you catch this beautyfull fish, you can be sure this trout would have been already cooked !! I hope it doesn't work this way in your contry my friend...
Hi Mitchell, I don’t know much about the river down your way. But I’ve found the fishing really good from Dollar up to the reservoir. I used to fish it around Tillicoultry when I was a lad but probably wouldn’t recognise half of the pools these days! Tight lines bud 👍🏼🐟🎣
Thanks Alan mate! 4lb is my go to for small streams like this. I beef up a bit when using a streamer but the fish can be leader shy so I always try to fish on the lighter side. Saying that, I’ve probably been snapped enough times to rethink that approach 😂😂👍🏼🎣
Thanks Keith! You're quite right, it still feels like winter up here! The hatches have been brilliant so far. Just need a little change of weather to encourage the fish to start looking up. Tight lines bud 👍🏼🎣
Beautiful video, You're proved the importance of catch and release, loved the section on invertebrates, I riverfly monitor for a conservation organisation in the south, so important to look after our rivers and fish stocks. Love your videos. Tight lines.
Thanks so much Chris! I do love turning over the rocks and marvelling at the diversity and abundance of invertebrate life in the river! I always find I appreciate the fishing that much more when I stop and pay attention to all of the living systems involved. Keep up the great work you do down your way too 👍🏼🎣🐟
Cheers Rhys! Still not really got going up here but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a wee rise in temperature. We could do with a bit of rain too 🙈👍🏼🎣
Thanks Richard! Yes, this experience has really got me wondering how many of the trout I catch are repeats. Might have to start paying attention to the markings a bit more! 🤷🏼♂️🐟🐟
Sean, Good job again reading the water and finding the right fly. When my son was at Glasgow Unnie, he fished a couple of times, the Kevin River near the Vet. School, He lived at Glasgow union residence on Great Western Rd and rode the bus to Bearsden Rd. He never caught anything but enjoyed fishing while at school. Cheers from Canada
Great to hear from you David! Believe it or not I have never fished the Kelvin but I hear good things about it. Hope you're keeping well over in Canada! 👍🏼
Great video, nice fish and more proof C&R works. Couple of years back I caught the same fish 3 times over a few weeks on my local river. One question -what is the make and model of your weigh net? Thanks!
Thanks mate! 3 times over a couple of weeks is some going 😂. Proof, as you say that C+R really does work. The net is a McLean Weigh R111. It's brilliant - one of the best purchases I've made in recent years
@@SouthsideFlyFishing cheers. My old weigh net is a McLean but it's big and was bought for fishing in NZ. It's an overkill for the wee burns I fish at home. I'm having a heck of a job finding a supplier here. Where did you get yours? 👍
I was a brand ambassador for their main UK distributor for a while, so I got it direct from them. I’ve heard they’re a bit tricky to get hold of. Greys do a scoop net that is very similar but doesn’t have the scales. Not sure if you’d maybe be able to find the McLean one from an international seller on eBay?
@@SouthsideFlyFishing Thanks. Well, I guess I'll maybe have to go back to NZ when the restrictions are lifted and get one there. These things are sent to try us! 😎
Lovely little channel you've got going here. Entertaining and pleasing - good production. Info for beginners like me is useful. I really liked the way you showed the larvae under the rock and the choice of fly - more on that would be great. Keep it going - I know how much effort goes into making a vid like this.
Thanks Andrew, I've been wondering whether to add a bit more of an educational twist to the videos so your comment is much appreciated. Tight lines buddy 👍🏼
Excellent video Sean. Have you got any advice on which flies or nymphs to use during this difficult start to the fishing season. I’ve been fishing the Clyde and the white cart and I’m struggling to catch anything at the moment
Thanks mate. It’s been a rough few weeks hasn’t it! I’ve caught and seen fish caught on lots of different flies. From size 20 midge pupa to size 4 streamers. If you find rising fish, chances are they’re feeding on olives. The usual flies like jinglers, comparaduns and especially CDC olives in size 14/16 should work. If you don’t find rising fish, I’d use pheasant tails size 14 or a streamer fished slowly. Concentrate on pools that have deep water in the middle and riffles at the head. The fish will likely be hanging about in the deeper stuff but they’ll move into faster water to feed. I’d also concentrate on the middle of the day (11-3pm) and don’t expect an evening rise unless the weather warms up a bit. It’ll come good once the temp picks up 👍🏼. Tight lines bud 🎣🐟
Thanks for the advice mate. Keep the videos coming, great to watch. I’ll put what you have said into practice and fingers crossed it helps, thanks again. Really appreciate it 👍🏼
I got a season ticket for this place after I competed in a comp at burnhouse fishery, can't wait to try it out and glad u have videos on it looks like my sort of wee river :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Peter! I bought about 5 copies of it from my local supermarket, and was praying the cashier would say something so I could tell them 'that's my photo on the cover' 😂😂
I really enjoy your videos mate! You have a great passion for fly fishing and ,like you, my hands tremble after catching a 3 pound wild river trout. I must admit that i am befuddled by the fact that you guys n gals in scotland, wales and england have to pay to fish your rivers and lakes. In Australia we pay about 25 bucks for a fishing liicense to fish everywhere. Salt and freshwater. We can fish all rivers as long as we access by a bridge and walk although most farmers allow you to get to the river via their land if you approach them with considerate intentions. Fly fishing is expensive enough without having to pay for permits! I say free the rivers for the common man! Anways, I look forward to your posts. I can tell you care about the environment and your fisheries. Peace out brother.
Thanks Greg! So glad you enjoyed the video and can relate to the emotions! As I'm sure you know, fishing rights here are based on a very old system of land ownership that's been around for centuries and probably needs to be revisited. Thankfully the fishing is still pretty affordable in Scotland, especially if you're targeting wild non-migratory trout. And having the right to roam freely through the countryside (in Scotland at least) is brilliant for getting people outdoors and connecting with nature. I'd love to fish 'down under' one day! Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣
@@SouthsideFlyFishing Onya Bro! You would love the trout fisheries in Australia. Tasmaniia is probably the most diverse with often better sized fish. Im sure you would love a fishing holiday down here and there are quite a few fly fishing options other than trout. Must admit I have a soft spot for those speckled gems of the fishy world!
@@Jimmy-n6j One day mate! I've seen fishing vids from Tasmania and the trout fishing looks incredible! Barramundi on the fly would be something else 🤟🏼🐟
If the water's running clear, I'd go relatively light, Jim. 4lb tippet is my go to for smaller rivers like the Devon. You can scale up if the water is carrying a bit of colour but the fish can be quite leader shy so I'd stay away from the heavy stuff if possible. Tight lines 👍🏼🎣🐟
Cheers Chris! You're too kind. I've been getting music from Soundstripe and I think the tune you're meaning is this one app.soundstripe.com/songs/8070 👍🏼
Thanks mate! I'd always say fish with what you have, but if you have access to a lighter rod, I'd leave the 7wt at home. I fish 3 and 4wts on small rivers like this and they definitely suit the smaller water. Tight lines 👍🏼🐟🎣
